Insights: Radio Audience Continues Drive Time Recovery

This week’s Westwood One blog looks at Nielsen’s just-released high-level findings from the September Portable People Meter markets and the June-July-August diary surveys.

For those expecting stability, there were surprising increases across the board.
  • Drive time audience recovery continues in the Portable People Meter markets: For the fifth month in a row, morning drive and afternoon drive listening have grown. Middays are at 92% and evenings are 89% of prior levels. Weekends audiences fully recovered in June.
  • In August, three times as many Americans commuted to work versus those who worked from home, according to the Dallas Federal Reserve: 64% of the February workforce commuted to work in August, three times as many as those who worked from home (20%).
  • PPM recovery scorecard: Reach is now 97% of March and format shares are rock steady: Compared to March, AM/FM radio has retained 97% of its weekly reach. Format shares are exceptionally stable. The sports format held onto its 3.8 share in September, which grew sharply from July to August.
  • Geopath: American average miles traveled recovers strongly, especially in markets outside of the top 25: Compared to the prior year, mileage travelled in the past week in the top 25 markets was +11% to +17% greater than in the prior year. In markets 26-100, average miles traveled was 29% to 39% greater than 2019. Markets outside the top 100 experienced significant growth in miles traveled, +48% to +54%.
  • Diary market scorecard: No impact in listening levels versus pre-COVID: Total listening during the June-July-August survey in the continuously measured diary markets is virtually identical to the pre-COVID January-February-March period. The just-released total week reach is 101% of the prior period and AQH is 100% of the prior survey.
  • One-third of the continuously measured diary markets now have greater listening levels than Q1 2020: Comparing the June-July-August diary surveys to the January-February-March period finds that thirteen markets currently have listening levels that exceed pre-COVID levels.

NuVoodoo Adds Digital Division, Launches Virtual Event Service

NuVoodoo Media Services, a data-driven media marketing, programming and content intelligence provider, announces that it has added a Digital Division to its service offerings and unveiled the company’s first Research/Marketing/Digital combo product, the Conference Cloud, a virtual event service.

“We’ve had the Conference Cloud in Beta since March when COVID-19 essentially shut down the entire convention sector,” said newly minted NuVoodoo EVP of Digital Russ Gilbert, “Tying together NuVoodoo’s research and marketing capabilities together with the technical platform from my old agency allowed us to move quickly and produce over a dozen events in Q2 and Q3 2020, most recently, Talentmasters’ successful Morning Show Boot Camp event last week. Our roster also includes celebrity fundraisers for entities like the United Way that raised big money for charity, and corporate events like the Virtual NEXT convention in Chicago that featured over 1,200 attendees and over 30 exhibitors.”

The Conference Cloud Platform contains all the features necessary to deploy a full-featured events site, including registration, virtual “exhibition booths,” social and networking features, and fully produced broadcasts with high-end production value. In addition, NuVoodoo’s Research Division provides insights into the content development process, and Digital Marketing rounds out the platform, putting it in a class by itself in terms of the complete service offering.

This 360-degree service offering is what got the attention of Don Anthony at Talentmasters and led to his choice of the Conference Cloud for Morning Show Boot Camp.

Anthony, Host of Morning Show Boot Camp and Publisher of Jockline Daily, commented: 'NuVoodoo's new 'Conference Cloud' provided the perfect platform for delivering this year's first-ever virtual Morning Show Boot Camp. They proved to be more like partners than a provider and helped to create a truly great and memorable event in every way possible."

NuVoodoo’s Digital Division also recently unveiled its first project for Food Equipment Reports Magazine, www.fermag.com, and will soon turn its attention to the pending re-launch of The Dan Patrick Show’s new digital presence this fall.

Carolyn Gilbert, President and Chief Executive Officer, NuVoodoo Media Services, commented: “Adding these digital services through a new Digital Division perfectly complements our research and marketing offerings.  We rely on a product circle that starts with research to determine marketing opportunities, and active and evolving technology provides solutions for our customers on an ongoing basis.  We all know that the world is changing quickly; it’s up to us to be responsive and ride this roller coaster in the direction it’s going.”

The Rundown: POTUS Could Return Monday To TWH

Doctors on President Trump's medical team said yesterday that they'd given him dexamethasone, a steroid recommended for those seriously ill with Covid-19, after his blood oxygen level dropped twice in recent days. But they also said Trump's health is getting better and that he could go home to the White House from Walter Reed Medical Center as early as today. Hours later, Trump, who is still ill and contagious, briefly drove in a motorcade to wave from an SUV to supporters who'd gathered outside the hospital. Secret Service agents in the vehicle with him could be seen wearing masks, face visors and other personal protective equipment. In the face of criticism for the outing, a White House spokesman said it had been cleared by his medical team. Shortly before his drive, the White House released a video of Trump in which he said he'd learned a lot about the coronavirus.

There remains a lack of clarity and questions about Trump's health, with Conley dodging some questions yesterday, such as what the president's lung scans show. Conley said, "There's some expected findings, but nothing of any major clinical concern," declining to say what those "expected findings" were. That came even as he acknowledged avoiding answering the day before about whether Trump had been given oxygen, something that it turns out did happen on Friday. Coney said, "I was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude that the team, the president, that his course of illness has had. Didn’t want to give any information that might steer the course of illness in another direction." In addition to dexamethasone, Trump is also taking remdesivir and was given a single dose Friday of an experimental drug that provides antibodies.

Biden Tests Negative: Joe Biden's campaign said yesterday that the Democratic presidential nominee had again tested negative for the coronavirus, after testing negative twice on Friday following the news of Trump's illness. There's been some concern as Trump and Biden shared a debate stage, although distanced, last Tuesday for the first presidential debate.

Coronavirus Cases in Trump's Circle: In addition to Trump, there have been at least 10 people in his family, the federal government, his advisers and recent contacts who've also tested positive for the coronavirus in the past few days. They include: First Lady Melania Trump; aide to Trump Hope Hicks; assistant to the president Nicholas Luna; GOP Senators Mike Lee, Thom Tillis and Ron Johnson; former counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway; Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien; RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel; and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

➤SENATE TO BE OUT FOR TWO WEEKS AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK, BUT BARRETT HEARINGS TO GO FORWARD: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said this weekend that the Senate will be out for two weeks, a move being taken amid the coronavirus outbreak that has affected President Trump, three senators, and others. However, the Senate confirmation hearings for Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, will still go forward as scheduled starting next Monday. McConnell has suggested that some senators may appear virtually, as has been done for other hearings during the pandemic.

However, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for McConnell to delay the hearings, saying yesterday, "if it's not safe for the Senate to meet in session, it's not safe for the hearings to go forward," and said he doesn't believe Barret can be properly examined via a virtual hearing. This comes as the Democrats have been insisting that the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's seat shouldn't be filled before the election, and that instead whoever wins in November should appoint the new Supreme Court justice.

The Supreme Court will begin its new term today -- the traditional first Monday in October -- with just eight justices, in the wake of Ginsburg's death last month. As it was doing at the end of last term, the court will be meeting by phone because of the coronavirus pandemic.

➤CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES HAVE BURNED RECORD FOUR MILLION ACRES: California officials announced Sunday that wildfires in this historic season have now burned a record four million acres in the state, more than double the previous record for a single year. And that record comes as the fire season still has some time to go. There have been more than 8,200 wildfires in California so far this season, which have killed 31 people and destroyed more than 8,400 buildings, and five of the six largest fires in state history were this year. Because of how many wildfires there've been, it's also brought historically unhealthy air and smoke even to areas not near the fires. Numerous studies have linked bigger wildfires in the U.S. to climate change.

➤TOP AIDES TO TEXAS ATTORNEY GENERAL ACCUSE HIM OF BRIBERY, ABUSE OF OFFICE: Seven top aides to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton have accused him of bribery, abuse of office and other offenses, according to a letter dated last Thursday that was obtained by the Austin American-Statesman and local TV station KVUE on Saturday. The letter was a notice to Paxton's office that the aides had reported the alleged offenses to law enforcement. Paxton's office denied the allegations to CNN, claiming the accusations were intended to obstruct and inquiry into alleged criminal behavior by other officials. The statement said, "Making false claims is a very serious matter and we plan to investigate this to the fullest extent of the law."

🏀HEAT TOP LAKERS 115-104 TO CUT L.A.'S NBA FINALS LEAD TO 2-1: The Miami Heat topped the L.A. Lakers 115-104 last night to cut the Lakers' NBA Finals lead to 2 games to 1. Jimmy Butler lead the Heat with a triple double, getting 40 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists, just the third 40-point triple-double in NBA Finals history. Miami got the win with starters Bam Adebayo and Goran Dragic out with injuries. Game 4 will be played Tuesday night.

WY Radio: Changing Of The Guard At Townsquare In Casper

Bob Price
When it comes to living Townsquare Media’s “local first” strategy, there’s no better example than Casper’s Bob Price, who has been leading its Wyoming stations since 1968. Market President. Beloved morning show host. Charity advocate, public speaker and fundraiser. Coach, mentor and friend. And his two most cherished roles, father and husband.

After a record run at the helm of our Casper stations, Price is moving on from his role as Townsquare Casper’s Market President. However, in true Buffalo Bob fashion, he will remain deeply connected to the brands and community he helped build as Townsquare Media Casper’s Vice President of Community Partnerships, focused on community partnerships and helping our local small businesses succeed and grow.

While Bob Price-sized shoes are impossible to fill, we’re happy to announce that he didn’t have to look farther than down the hall for his successor, Tom McCarthy. Tom joined Townsquare Casper as Digital Managing Editor in 2010, and quickly grew into our National VP of Digital, working with our media brands, of all sizes, across the US, while based in his beloved hometown of Casper.

Tom McCarthy
Donovan Short, Casper Director of Content remarked: “Working for Bob for over 20 years has been the highlight of my career – he’s been the boss and friend of a lifetime, and I owe him more than he knows. When you’re lucky enough to encounter those rare people like The Buffalo, you always wonder in the back of your mind how in the world things carry on after – in this case, it couldn’t be a better scenario. I’ve worked alongside Tom for over a decade now – he has a huge passion for this community, it’s home, it’s personal – and he is absolutely all-in on the bar Bob set to serve it well.”

Townsquare COO – Local Media, Erik Hellum added: “Bob Price’s daily commitment to the Casper community and the state of Wyoming is unrivaled – he is the gold standard for doing well by doing good. He has not only embodied the Townsquare ethos of live and local, but has strongly influenced our mission through the great work that he and his team have done, and I couldn’t be happier that he will continue to do that in his new role.”

Westwood One Talker Michael Savage Leaving Radio

Conservative radio legend Michael Savage shocked his legions of loyal listeners Wednesday by announcing that he will soon leave radio after more than 25-years on the airwaves, according to a story at Breitbart.

As of early next year, Savage will be heard exclusively on his Savage Nation Podcast.

“I have a big announcement to make,” Savage began. “Come January, you’re only going to hear me on my podcast.”

“You will not hear me on this radio station anymore as of January,” the radio host continued, before adding that he’s legally unable to divulge the reason. “I cannot give you the reasons; I am constrained for legal reasons. You will no longer hear Michael Savage on radio anywhere in America.”

Later, Savage took to social media where he appeared to drop a hint as to why his radio was soon coming to an end, tweeting: “[Y]es, sadly so, as of January, 2021, you will no longer hear Michael Savage on any radio station. ONLY ON MY PODCAST! (too many Chris Wallace’s took over radio).”

MSNBC’s Ratings Hinge on Politics

CNN and Fox News enjoyed a ratings boom this spring when there was a tsunami of news, between the escalating Covid-19 crisis and nationwide protests over police brutality.

The same didn’t happen at MSNBC. Its overall viewership barely grew in the second quarter, and the network lost viewers in the key demographic for advertisers, according to The Wall Street Journal citing Nielsen data.

More than any other cable news channel, MSNBC relies on political news to drive its ratings. Its prime-time audience surged in the years after the 2016 presidential election, helping it leapfrog CNN, as Americans followed nonstop news involving President Donald Trump, such as special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation and the president’s impeachment.

But for much of 2020, politics hasn’t been the big story. By the end of the second quarter, CNN had doubled its audience in the key news demographic of adults 25 to 54 years old, compared with the end of 2019. Ratings leader Fox News jumped 55%, while MSNBC’s viewership rose about 5%, and it fell back into third place behind CNN, according to Nielsen data.

MSNBC’s total prime-time audience remains higher than CNN’s. When politics came back to the forefront in late August, MSNBC got stronger, winning back viewers and narrowing its gap with CNN in the key demographic. The network finished the third quarter with its largest total audience so far this year. A contested presidential election could mean intense viewer interest in politics for a prolonged period, a likely boon for MSNBC.

Nielsen Data, Wall Street Journal graphic

The new chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, Cesar Conde, isn’t satisfied with MSNBC’s heavy reliance on politics and is determined not to miss out on ratings surges during big national news stories such as the coronavirus crisis and the protests that followed the killing of George Floyd, people familiar with his thinking said.

Conde is undertaking a review of NBCUniversal’s news operations that includes an analysis of MSNBC’s audience trends, according to people familiar with the matter. He wants to establish a brighter line between daytime news coverage and evening opinion analysis, they say.

The financial stakes are high. WarnerMedia’s CNN and Fox Corp.’s Fox News are both on track to post single-digit percentage growth in TV ad revenue in 2020, while MSNBC is on pace to post a single-digit percentage decline in TV ad revenue, according to Kagan, a unit of S&P Global Intelligence.

Gannett Hires Spotify Veteran

Gannett Co. has named Mayur Gupta to the newly created position of chief marketing and strategy officer, a move meant to sharpen the U.S. newspaper chain’s focus on attracting digital subscribers as the coronavirus pandemic wreaks havoc on the publishing industry.

Generating digital subscription revenue was already critical for media outlets, given the difficulties of sustaining newsrooms on ad dollars and declining print-circulation revenue. The crisis has exacerbated those challenges.

“Our future will be a digital-subscription-led business,” said Mr. Gupta, who earlier worked at such subscription-oriented businesses as Spotify Technology. “Success will reflect our speed and the overall user experience, with journalism at the core.”

Mayur Gupta
Gannett, whose holdings include USA Today and more than 200 daily newspapers, was hit hard by the pandemic, as were other local publishers. Adjusting for the big merger Gannett completed last year, second-quarter print advertising revenue fell 45% year-over-year, while revenue from digital advertising and marketing services declined more than 26%.

The company posted a net loss of $436.9 million in the quarter, driven largely by a noncash charge of $393.4 million related to uncertainty about the Covid-19 crisis. Gannett eliminated more than $125 million in costs in the quarter through pay cuts, furloughs and reductions in travel and other spending.

Michael Reed, Gannett’s chief executive, said on an earnings call with analysts that the publisher intends to phase out those furloughs and pay cuts and replace them “with permanent cost reductions, since the economy is likely to remain challenged or under pressure until the pandemic is fully under control.”

Gannett ended the second quarter with 927,000 digital subscribers across all of its outlets combined, up 7.4% from the first quarter. Local publishers have had a harder time persuading readers to pay for journalism than select national outlets. The New York Times reported nearly 4.4 million digital news subscribers in the latest quarter, while News Corp said The Wall Street Journal had over 2.2 million.

Gupta said that while Gannett is behind those national competitors, the “market is massive, and the need for trusted news in local communities has never been stronger.”

Competition for subscriber dollars is fierce. “There’s no question that at some point the subscription economy reaches a saturation point,” Mr. Gupta said. “Companies that solve societal needs will be successful.”

PR Techsurvey: Public Radio In A Global Pandemic

In partnership with the Public Radio Program Directors Association, Jacobs Media has released Public Radio Techsurvey 2020 (“PRTS”), its latest annual study exploring the ongoing digital media revolution and its impact on public radio. PRTS 2020 takes a continued look at the ever-changing media consumption behaviors of core public radio listeners, and particularly, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the upcoming November election.

The pandemic cuts both ways. While more than one in four respondents says they have increased their public radio consumption in the past year, more than one in ten cites less listening to public radio. In both cases, COVID and its tentacles are behind these changes in listening.

Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs comments, “In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impending election, the data in this year’s Public Radio Techsurvey, our 12th study of public radio listeners, reveals how the traumatic environment in 2020 is impacting public radio listening behaviors. The march to digital had already been well underway, and the events of this year show further seismic shifts in listening by location and platform.”

Abby Goldstein, President of PRPD, adds, “As 2020 has proved challenging to the public radio system on many levels, the data revealed in this year’s PRTS is a valuable resource for programmers and managers seeking actionable information to track and navigate these choppy waters.”

Highlights from PRTS 2020 include:
  • Overall radio listening is down, with in-car listening most impacted – The percentage of the public radio audience who say they do not listen to broadcast radio for more than one hour on an average weekday (on any device) increased to 17%, from 14% last year (and 11% in 2018). Listening to public radio on an AM/FM radio in a vehicle saw a precipitous decline as well, down to 30% of overall listening (down from 39% in 2019).
  • The presence of “regular” radios in the home is showing a pronounced decline – The pandemic appears to have sped up the decline in AM/FM radios in the home, as only 77% now say they use a “regular” radio where they live, sharply down from 82% one year ago.
  • Digital listening is up sharply – More than one-third (36%) of typical weekly public radio listening is to digital sources (computer, mobile, podcasts, smart speakers) – the highest since we started tracking this data – showing a marked increase, up from 31% one year ago. Younger generations lead in digital listening, with half (50%) of public radio listening among Millennials via digital platforms and 46% listening to public radio using digital sources among Generation X. Additionally, nearly four in ten smartphone/tablet owners (38%) have downloaded their primary public radio station’s mobile app (up from 32% in 2019) – another sign that listening is shifting to the digital arena.
  • Podcast usage remains robust – Now just under four in ten (38%) listen to podcasts/on-demand audio weekly or more (vs. 34% one year ago), led by Millennials (74%) and News/Talk partisans (46%). However, one-third (33%) of weekly podcast consumers say they are listening to less “real time” AM/FM radio as a result.
  • The political climate and the effects of COVID-19 are impacting public radio listening in myriad ways – Among those listening to more public radio in the past year (26% of all respondents), more than half (55%) say it is a result of the current political climate, while half (50%) report it is due to a lifestyle change (e.g., triggered by the COVID crisis), and 39% are listening more for COVID-19 news coverage. On the other hand, three-fourths (76%) of those listening to less public radio in the past year (11% of the total sample) cite spending less time in a car as the culprit, followed by more than half of this group (54%) who point to those same lifestyle changes.
  • Most feel there is a long way to go with the pandemic – Two in three (67%) believe that when it comes to the COVID-19 outbreak, the worst is yet to come. That pessimism has grown (up from 49%) since our COVID study conducted this past May. And the vast majority say they are engaging in few or none of their pre-pandemic activities.

PRTS 2020 data was gathered online from June 23-July 19, 2020. Overall, 53 public radio stations across the U.S. participated, contributing 19,015 respondents, most of whom are members of these stations’ databases.

ABC News Staffers To Isolate After Christie Contact

ABC News staffers who were in direct contact with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will quarantine for 14 days, a spokesperson for the network said in a statement Saturday after Christie announced he had tested positive for the coronavirus, reports CNN.

Christie, an ABC News political analyst, was on set for ABC News' post-debate coverage Tuesday. Others on set included ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis, former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Democracy for America chief executive Yvette Simpson, and Republican strategist Sara Fagan.

"[Christie] was last in our TV3 studio on Tuesday, and he won't appear in our studio again until he's cleared by a doctor, following guidance from the CDC and local health officials," the ABC spokesperson said. "Anyone on our staff in direct contact with the Governor as defined by the CDC will self-isolate for 14 days. We wish the Governor a speedy recovery."

Chris Christie
The ABC spokesperson declined to comment when asked whether anyone on its staff had shown symptoms of coronavirus and whether all staff who came into contact with Christie had received a test by Saturday afternoon.

Christie was at last weekend's Rose Garden ceremony in which President Donald Trump announced his Supreme Court nomination. Christie was also a member of a small circle of individuals who helped prep Trump for the debate. Several individuals from both the Rose Garden event and the debate prep sessions have since tested positive for the coronavirus.

Christie's participation on ABC News' post-debate panel spurred some controversy when it was announced, given that he had helped Trump prepare for the political showdown.

Following his coronavirus diagnosis, some high-profile members of ABC News privately expressed additional anger at what had transpired, according to a person familiar with the matter.

"The decision for ABC News to include a Trump advisor as a paid analyst on air for the same debate for which he prepped the President was questionable," one high-profile ABC News on-air personality told CNN Business on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. "Now that same advisor's reckless behavior is risking the lives of ABC News employees. What was management thinking?"

In a statement sent to staffers Saturday afternoon, ABC News president James Goldston stressed that the network will continue to take precautions to reduce the risk of coronavirus.

The Drudge Report Jumps Off Trump Train

Something has changed at Drudge Report, the influential site known for its tabloid headlines and conservative take on the news, reports The NY Times.

Matt Drudge, a web pioneer who went live with his site in 1995, was seen as an important media champion of Donald J. Trump’s 2016 campaign. But nowadays, like CNN, The New York Times and many other outlets, Drudge Report is just one more purveyor of “fake news,” in the Trump view.

For anyone who had not stopped by the site since it developed a reputation for lifting Mr. Trump and his brand of conservatism, the welcome page on Monday made for an arresting sight. At the top were images of stickers being sold by the Biden-Harris campaign that read, “I paid more income taxes than Donald Trump.” Below that appeared a scroll of headlines linking to news stories from various sites, all of them written in Mr. Drudge’s staccato style, many of them related to a New York Times investigation of Mr. troubled financial history.

Mat Drudge
It was a notable shift from four years ago, when Drudge heralded Mr. Trump’s “rock star welcome in Florida” and highlighted stories that cast doubt on the health of his opponent, Hillary Clinton. His site, back then, also included links to coverage of Trump rallies as they happened.

Cracks started to appear in the summer of 2019, when Drudge Report featured a headline about the slow progress on a barrier Mr. Trump had repeatedly pledged to build along the southern border with Mexico: “NO NEW WALL AT ALL!” In December, when the House of Representatives impeached the president for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, the site went big once again: “TRUMP ON BRINK.”

The site has perhaps paid a price for jumping off the Trump train. It had 1.4 million unique visitors in August, down 42 percent from a year earlier, according to Comscore data provided by The Righting, which analyzes viewership of right-leaning outlets. Its audience has trailed that of the right-wing sites The Gateway Pundit and Daily Caller. New rivals looking to outdraw the once-fastest news-slinger on the web include Liberty Daily, Rantingly and NewsAmmo, The Washington Times noted.

October 5 Radio History

➦In 1912...Tony Marvin was born (Died at age 86 – October 10, 1998). He was a staff announcer for CBS, and later became most known as the long-time announcer for Arthur Godfrey. He was also the original voice of 'Tony the Tiger'.

Tony Marvin
Marvin's first job in radio was at WNYC in New York City. From there, he went to CBS as a staff announcer, beginning October 1, 1939. A 1959 article in Radio and Television Mirror reported that at CBS "Tony did everything from daytime serials to symphonies and in 1946, when the Arthur Godfrey morning show was sustaining, Tony was assigned to it." When Godfrey's activities expanded from Arthur Godfrey Time to include Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and Arthur Godfrey and his Friends, Marvin did the announcing for those shows as well.

Marvin branched out in 1958, adding a two-hour, Monday-Saturday disc jockey show on WABC to his other duties.  In 1961, Marvin became host of My True Story, a radio drama that moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System after having been on ABC and NBC for a total of 17 years. That same year he became a newscaster for Mutual.

In his later years, Marvin had two more stints with programs on local radio stations. In 1976, he had a four-hour afternoon show, "Tony's Time," on WATR in Waterbury, Connecticut.  Beginning in 1977, Marvin had a show on WDJZ in Bridgeport, Connecticut, which at the time was one of the first radio stations playing the "Music of Your Life" format, consisting primarily of music from the big band era. In 1981, Marvin came out of retirement to do "The Tony Marvin Show," a one-hour program broadcast live from the Palm Beach Hilton on WKAO. He said, "I want to bring back live radio." The show originated in the hotel's dining room and featured an orchestra.

➦In 1921....the first World Series to air on radio got underway between the New York Yankees and Giants. KDKA Pittsburgh and WJZ New York broadcast direct from the Polo Grounds, while WBZ Springfield and announcer Thomas Cowan recreated the games in their studios from reports phoned in from the stadium.

➦In 1925...WSM-AM in Nashville signed-on.

WSM is primarily associated with country music through its weekly Saturday night program, the Grand Ole Opry, the longest-running radio program in history.

The Opry began as the WSM Barn Dance in 1925, but after only about a year on the air, the program's host, "Judge" Hay, referred to the programming as being "Grand Ole Opry" in contrast to the preceding grand opera program on NBC.

In 1932, WSM boosted its power to 50,000 watts, becoming Tennessee's first clear-channel station.

In addition to its vast nighttime coverage area, the station boasts one of the largest daytime coverage areas in the country. It provides at least grade B coverage as far east as Chattanooga, as far north as Evansville, Indiana, as far west as Jackson, Tennessee and as far south as Huntsville, Alabama. Under the right conditions, it can be heard in nearly all of Tennessee and much of Kentucky, and can be picked up as far away as the fringes of the St. Louis area.

The station traditionally played country music in the nighttime hours, when listeners from around the United States would tune in.

Before the advent of television, the station broadcast long-form radio (both local and NBC network) programs in addition to music.

After TV became popular (thus largely eliminating the audience for full-length radio programs), WSM adopted a "MOR" (middle of the road) music format during the daytime hours, and continued to play country music at night. It was not until about 1979 that WSM adopted the 24-hour country music format of today.

WSM is credited with shaping Nashville into a recording industry capital. Because of WSM's incredible reach, musical acts from all across the eastern United States would come to Nashville in the early decades of the station's existence, in hopes of getting to perform on WSM. Over time, as more acts and recording companies came to Nashville, the city became known as the center of the country music industry. Disc jockey David Cobb is credited with first referring to Nashville as "Music City USA", a designation that has since been adopted as the city's official nickname by the local tourism board.

WSM's unusual diamond-shaped antenna is visible from I-65 just south of Nashville (in Brentwood). When the 878-foot tower was built in 1932, it was the tallest antenna in North America. Its height was reduced to 808 feet (246 m) in 1939 when it was discovered that the taller tower was causing self-cancellation in the fringe areas of reception of the station (it is now known that 195 electrical degrees, about 810 feet, is the optimum height for a Class A station on that frequency).

➦In 1934...'Hollywood Hotel' became the first network radio show to originate from Hollywood.  It featured Hollywood stars in dramatized versions of then-current movies and "helped to make Hollywood an origination point for major radio programs." The CBS was heavily promoted as being the first program broadcast from the US West Coast, and continued to do so weekly for the next four years.

➦In 1945..."Meet the Press" premiered.  It originally began on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1945 as American Mercury Presents: Meet the Press, a program to promote The American Mercury, a magazine that Lawrence E. Spivak purchased in 1935.   Before the program aired, Spivak asked journalist Martha Rountree, who had worked in radio and had been employed by Spivak as a roving editor for the magazine, to critique the plans for the new radio show. Based on her advice, Rountree created a new radio program that she called The American Mercury.

On November 6, 1947, while still on the Mutual Broadcasting System, the television rights to the program were purchased by General Foods, which began to air the show on the NBC television network with the title shortened to simply Meet the Press; the radio version also adopted the new name. Although some sources credit Spivak with the program's creation, Rountree developed the idea on her own, and Spivak joined as co-producer and business partner in the enterprise after the show had already debuted.

➦In 1947…The first radio recorded on magnetic tape aired on ABC Radio. It featured a performance by Bing Crosby. The broadcast demonstrated the capabilities of the new Ampex 200 tape recorder.

➦In 1952…After 11½ years on the air, the creaking door of "Inner Sanctum Mysteries" was heard for the last time as the series ended its run on ABC Radio.
