Tik Tok Least Trusted Social Media In Canada

TikTok is experiencing the fastest rate of growth among Canadians, but is also the least trusted social media platform in the country, reports The Canadian Press citing a new report.

The research published Thursday by Toronto Metropolitan University showed the short video app has nearly tripled its reach since 2019 with 29 per cent of survey respondents on the app, up from 10 per cent.

However, trust levels for social media platforms declined significantly from 2021, with just one in 10

Canadians having high trust in such apps. Trust in TikTok was particularly low, falling so far that the app replaced Facebook as Canada's least trusted social media organization.

His research was based on an online survey of 2,022 Canadians above the age of 16 conducted in October, months before the federal and provincial governments banned TikTok from its employees' phones as tensions with China intensified.

Some 91 per cent of survey respondents used YouTube, while 82 per cent were on Facebook, 77 per cent on Facebook Messenger and 55 per cent on Instagram.

Reporting its operating results for the fourth quarter of 2022 and for the full year, Saga Communications reports net revenue increased 3.3% to $30.1 million for Q4 of 2022, compared to $29.2 million for the same period a year ago.

As a result of Ed Christian’s passing, the company was required to make several payments to his estate as outlined in his employment agreement. Without these expenses operating income would have increased 12.3% to $16.9 million, free cash flow would have been approximately flat with last year at $13.6 million and net income would have increased 16.8% to $13 million.”

Study: Americans Spread Fake News To Fit In

"Fake news" shows up in liberal and conservative social circles on the web. But why do we share misinformation?

Researchers analyzed 50,000 pairs of U.S. Twitter users and the fake or politically-biased information they shared between August and December of 2020. Results found Twitter users were less likely to socialize with one another if one did not share fake news posted by the other account.

Those who were more concerned about fitting in were more likely to share a friend's fake news tweets.

This was true for right and left-leaning accounts.

"Political ideology alone doesn’t explain people’s tendency to share fake news within their social groups," researcher Matthew Asher Lawson said. "There are many factors at play, including the very basic desire to fit in and not to be excluded."

March 10 Radio History

➦In 1876...Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful telephone transmission of clear speech using a liquid transmitter when Bell spoke into his device, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." and Watson heard each word distinctly.

Scottish-born Bell made the call over 100ft of wire during trials in his Boston laboratory in the US, summoning his electrician assistant from the adjoining room. In his journal for that day, Bell writes: “To my delight he came and declared that he had heard and understood what I said.”

The two men changed places and Bell listened as Watson read passages from a book over the device. Bell records: “It was certainly the case that articulate sounds proceeded from the speaker. The effect was loud but indistinct and muffled.”

Just three days earlier, Bell had been granted a US patent for his invention. But it wasn’t an instant success. Communications company Western Union rejected the opportunity to buy the rights for $100,000, believing it wasn’t a rival to the telegraph. A decision it later regretted.

➦In 1920...Kenneth Charles "Jethro" Burns  born (Died - February 4, 1989), He was a mandolinist and one-half of the comedy duo Homer and Jethro with Henry D. "Homer" Haynes.

Burns was born in Conasauga, TN. His family moved to Knoxville when he was three. In 1936, he auditioned for a talent contest at Knoxville radio station WNOX where he met Henry Haynes, also 16. The two formed a duo and WNOX program director Lowell Blanchard gave them the stage names Homer and Jethro after forgetting their names on the air.

Burns was drafted into the US Army and served in Europe during World War II and reunited with Haynes, who had served in the Pacific, in Knoxville in 1945. By 1947, the duo moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and were working at WLW on the station's Midwestern Hayride. They signed with King Records, where they worked as a house band and recorded singles on their own, and two years later signed with RCA Records. The pair were fired along with other stars by new management at WLW in 1948, and after a brief tour, they moved to Springfield, MO and performed on KWTO with Chet Atkins, the Carter Family and Slim Wilson.

In 1949, they moved to Chicago, Illinois and played at the Chicago Theater. Between shows, they would go to WLS to appear live on National Barn Dance.

In 1959, they won a Grammy for the best comedy performance in 1959 for "The Battle of Kookamonga", a parody of Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans".

RIAA Says Vinyl Outsold CDs in 2022

Vinyl outsold CDs in the United States last year for the first time since 1987, according to an annual report from the Recording Industry Association of America. Vinyl sales accounted for 41 million units, compared to 33 million for CDs, comprising 71% of physical format revenue and growing 17% from the previous year.

According to Spin, Taylor Swift’s Midnights was the top-selling vinyl release of 2022, with an astounding 945,000 copies sold. Harry Styles’ Harry’s House (480,000), Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour (263,000), Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (254,000), and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (243,000) rounded out the top five.

“2022 was an impressive year of sustained ‘growth-over-growth’ more than a decade after streaming’s explosion onto the music scene,” RIAA chairman/CEO Mitch Glazier says. “Continuing that long run, subscription streaming revenues now make up two-thirds of the market with a record high $13.3 billion. This long and ongoing arc of success has only been possible thanks to the determined and creative work of record companies fighting to build a healthy streaming economy where artists and rights-holders get paid wherever and whenever their work is used.”

Overall, the U.S. recorded music industry had an estimated retail value of $15.9 billion in 2022, an all-time high that includes 92 million paid streaming subscriptions. In fact, streaming accounted for 84% of that total revenue and “continued to be the largest driver with paid subscriptions, ad-supported services, digital and customized radio, social media platforms, digital fitness apps, and others.”

Townsquare Media Reports New High For Net Revenue

Townsquare Media, Inc. announced today its financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2022.

"I am proud to report that Townsquare's transformation into a Digital First Local Media Company allowed us to deliver record results in 2022 despite a progressively challenging economic landscape. In 2022, we drove net revenue and Adjusted EBITDA to new highs with strong net revenue growth of +11% year-over-year and Adjusted EBITDA growth of +8% year-over-year. In addition, we generated significant cash flow from operations of $50 million, ending the year with over $43 million of cash, and net leverage declined to an all-time low of 4.29x," commented Bill Wilson, Chief Executive Officer of Townsquare Media, Inc.

Bill Wilson
"2022 was a significant inflection point for our Company. It marked the first year where radio no longer comprised the majority of our revenue and profit, further separating Townsquare from our local media peers, and placing a spotlight on our world-class team and our unique and differentiated strategy, assets, platforms and solutions. Our growth engine has been and will continue to be our digital solutions, which were the primary driver of our 2022 growth. Total digital revenue increased +16% year-over-year (and +12% in the fourth quarter) to $231 million, and total digital Adjusted Operating Income increased +12% year-over-year to $69 million, representing a 30% profit margin. We believe Townsquare's ability to drive profitable, sustainable digital growth is a key differentiator for our Company, and we reaffirm our expectation that our digital revenue will grow to at least $275 million by 2024."

Wilson continued, "We are uniquely positioned as a Digital First Local Media Company focused principally on markets outside of the Top 50 in the United States, with a resilient digital growth engine supported by both a recurring subscription digital marketing solutions business, with a large addressable market and limited competition, and a highly differentiated digital advertising technology platform. We believe that our business model and strategy position us to weather the current economic environment better than most."

Wake-Up Call: Russian Missiles Pound Ukraine Cities

Daily Mail Composite 3/9/23

Russian missiles struck cities across Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, the Black Sea port of Odesa and the second city of Kharkiv early on Thursday, while Ukrainian defenders repelled fierce assaults on the beleaguered town of Bakhmut. The missiles hit a wide arc of targets, including cities stretching from Zhytomyr, Vynnytsia and Rivne in the west to Dnipro and Poltava in central Ukraine, officials said. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions were registered in the southwestern part of the town and rescue services were on their way. Some residents reported power cuts. The governor of Odesa region, Maksym Marchenko, said on Telegram that a mass missile attack had hit an energy facility in the port city, cutting power. Residential areas had also been hit.  Kharkiv region Governor Oleh Synehubov said the city and region had been hit by 15 strikes, with targets including infrastructure. Other strikes were reported in the central city of Dnipro and regions throughout the country.

Late on Wednesday, Ukraine's military said its forces had managed to push back intense Russian attacks on the eastern mining town of Bakhmut, despite a Russian claim of control of its eastern half.

➤3 LAPD OFFICERS WOUNDED: Three Los Angeles police officers were shot and wounded on Wednesday evening but were in stable condition, while the suspect was dead, according to the chief of police and media reports. "I'm relieved and grateful that these three brave officers are in stable condition, and are able to have a conversation with two of them, when I checked in on them," said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in a news conference on Wednesday. Live overhead images from CBS-affiliate KCAL-TV had earlier shown several police cars sealing off the area around a garage in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. Officers in full tactical gear were seen near the site where the suspected gunman was holed up. CBS News said the suspect, a parolee at large wanted for an unknown felony, was reported dead at the scene just before 9:30 pm local time following a lengthy standoff with the police.

➤SLIP AND FALL SENDS McCONNELL TO HOSPITAL: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was taken to a hospital on Wednesday night after a fall at a Washington-area hotel, his spokesman said in a brief statement. The statement added that McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, had “tripped during a private dinner” and had been admitted to the hospital, where he was being treated. The statement, from David Popp, the senator’s communications director, didn’t provide more details or name the hospital.  Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services said that an ambulance was dispatched to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue at 9:17 p.m. on a report that someone had been injured in a fall.

➤INSTAGRAM DISRUPTED BY 'ISSUES': Meta Platforms Inc.’s Instagram says it’s resolved “technical issues” that disrupted the photo-sharing service for thousands of users around the world. Instagram, which hosts about 2 billion users a month, didn’t elaborate on the disruption. At its peak, website tracker DownDetector received more than 50,000 reports covering glitches from difficulties posting updates to long load times. The hashtag #instagramdown at one point trended globally as users from around the world flooded their feeds with complaints. The last service outage documented on Instagram’s Twitter feed dated back to October, when the company tweeted about a bug it fixed that blocked users from accounts or altered the numbers of followers.

➤EX GAL-PAL WANTS TO TALK:  Tiger Woods’ ex-girlfriend Erica Herman is seeking to nullify an August 2017 non-disclosure agreement with the professional golfer.  Due to the NDA, Herman is unsure if she is able to disclose “facts giving rise to various legal claims she believes she has,” her attorneys said in a complaint filed in Martin County, Florida. The NDA is legally unenforceable under the Ending Forced Arbitration Of Sexual Assault And Sexual Harassment Act Of 2021, according to the suit. The latter law prohibits employers from enforcing NDAs and non-disparagement clauses  — often signed on the first day of employment, and sometimes unknowingly — that stop workers from discussing any incidents of sexual harassment or assault occurring months or years later. Herman’s complaint follows a lawsuit she filed last October seeking more than $30 million after Woods broke off their relationship. She claimed she was locked out of a house where they lived, in violation of an “oral tenancy agreement” that she claimed gave her the right to live there.

➤BIDEN BUDGET PLANS OUT TODAY: President Biden’s budget will lay out plans to cut drug prices, crack down on fraud and raise some business taxes. The blueprint will propose reducing federal budget deficits by nearly $3 trillion over the next decade, administration officials said. Republicans are expected to oppose many of Biden’s plans. The document is likely to shed light on possible themes of the president’s expected re-election campaign. It will also call out large corporations, including the oil industry and drug companies, White House officials said.

➤DeSANTIS TO VISIT POLITICALLY IMPORTANT IOWA:  Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will meet with Iowa Republican legislators in Des Moines on Friday amid rising expectations that he will run for president in 2024, according to people familiar with the matter. DeSantis has been on a national tour to promote his recently-published book, “The Courage to Be Free,” yet his visit to a state that has typically been crucial to the nomination hopes of presidential candidates will be scrutinized by both Republicans and Democrats.  The governor will greet members of the state House and Senate at the Capitol, according to the people, engaging in the sort of retail politicking that’s expected in the Iowa caucuses. The Legislature, which is controlled by Republicans, will not be in session on Friday.

His trip will take place three days before former President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Iowa. Trump, who announced his candidacy last November, has been lashing out at DeSantis, whom he once considered a political protege but now may become a powerful rival.  DeSantis has, for the most part, ignored the insults, and Trump.

Spotify Bets The Future Includes Podcasts With Video

Spotify Technology SA said on Wednesday it would roll out new features like smart shuffle and previews of podcasts and music playlists on its audio streaming platform, as it crossed 500 million in monthly active listeners.  The Swedish company, which has invested heavily in building up its podcast and audiobooks business in recent years in a bid to attract users and advertisers, announced the "new re-imagined user interface" at its Stream On event.

Spotify on Wednesday also unveiled a series of new podcasts, partnerships and features as part of its effort to dominate in all things audio, despite recent challenges and controversies in the space, reports The L-A Times.

At an event near its offices in Los Angeles’ Arts District, the Swedish music streaming giant unveiled a partnership with popular online content creator Markiplier — whose shows “Distractible” and “Go! My Favorite Sports Team” will launch exclusive video episodes on Spotify.

The company also announced a scripted Batman spinoff series called “The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark,” starring Hasan Minhaj, who played the villain in last year’s “Batman Unburied.”

Though podcasts are traditionally an audio-focused format, Spotify is hoping shows that incorporate video, like Markiplier’s, will be a big part of its future.

Daniel Ek
Spotify Chief Executive Daniel Ek boasted about Spotify’s rapid growth in podcasting, saying the company has gone from about 10 million podcast listeners in 2018 to more than 100 million currently.

Spotify has been trying to establish itself as a leader in the podcast space, looking to draw in new subscribers and diversify its offerings beyond music, even as investors have sometimes expressed doubt about the play. Competition is fierce, with Apple and YouTube serving as major platforms for podcasts and TikTok and Twitch attracting hordes of young, digitally savvy viewers.

The company acquired a handful of podcast networks including the Ringer — a popular sports and culture brand — Gimlet Media and Parcast, as well as the podcast distribution platform Anchor FM. In 2020, Spotify became the exclusive home of the influential “The Joe Rogan Experience” in a deal said to be worth around $100 million.

Edison: Radio Remains Top Ad Supported Audio Source

Listeners age 13+ in the U.S. spend 59% of their daily, ad-supported audio time with AM/FM radio, more time than with all other ad-supported audio sources combined, including YouTube, podcasts, and ad-supported streaming services. AM/FM radio is the top ad-supported audio source for all ages in the U.S., including Gen Z (age 13-24) who spend 33% of their daily ad-supported audio time with AM/FM radio, more than for any other ad-supported platform.

The finding comes from Edison Research’s Share of Ear® dataset and is the first in a four-part series to be released through Edison’s Weekly Insights email on the power of traditional AM/FM radio in the U.S.

With an abundance of research on digital media recently, the series serves to remind the audio industry of the strengths of traditional radio, and the first data point focuses on ad-supported audio. The Share of Ear service provides measurement of all audio sources in the U.S., but it’s important to remember that only a portion of them are available to advertisers.

Gen Z audio consumers are well-known to favor their mobile phones for audio consumption, so it may come as a surprise to learn that 33% of the total time they spend on a daily basis with ad-supported audio goes to AM/FM radio, which includes over-the-air broadcasts and streams.
