Urban One Promotes Three to VPs/Radio

David Kantor, CEO of Urban One’s Radio Division, announced today the promotion of three key company executives, Daniel Abercrombie, Kimberly Kyle, and Ezio Torres to Vice President, Radio.

Daniel Abercrombie, who oversees the company’s Cincinnati market, (WIZF-FM, WOSL-FM and WDBZ-AM), started with the company in 2015 as a Local Sales Manager. Abercrombie became General Sales Manager in 2018, and then in 2019, he was promoted to Station Manager.
“The importance of radio as a means of serving our local communities cannot be understated. I am humbled for the recognition but truly proud of our entire Cincinnati team with how they persevered in 2020 and excited to continue the journey with them. But also, it is an honor just to be surrounded by great people every day as a whole at Urban One, and I am just very thankful,” said Abercrombie.

Kimberly Kyle held the role of Local Sales Manager with Radio One for 14 years. After serving two years as the Director of Sales at North American Broadcasting, Kyle returned to Urban One in 2017 as the Columbus market station manager (WCKX-FM, WJYD-FM and WXMG-FM). “Urban One and the Columbus team are amazingly resilient. Our people just know how to get it done!” said Kyle.  “It’s an honor and a privilege to be surrounded by some of the greatest minds in the business and to represent this audience every day!”

Daniel, Kimberly and Ezio

Ezio Torres returned to the company in 2016 as the Director of Sales in the Philadelphia market (WPHI-FM, WPPZ-FM, Classix 107.9, and WRNB-FM). Previously, between 2002 and 2009, Torres held the National Sales Manager role in Urban One’s Washington, D.C. market and then National Sales Manager and General Sales Manager in Philadelphia. He was promoted to General Manager in 2018. “I am excited and thrilled to be recognized by the company! I am also humbled because the acknowledgment should go to every member of the Philadelphia market team – one of the best teams with which I have had the pleasure to be associated,” said Torres.

David Kantor, CEO, Radio Division, stated, “I am delighted to celebrate the achievements and recognize the outstanding efforts of Dan, Kim, and Ezio. They earned the promotion to Vice President with their strong management capabilities, especially in 2020. Not only have they continued to improve their operations, but each made their 2020 budget in what can only be described as an unprecedented year. Under their leadership, each market beat their Miller Kaplan Metrics in Local, National, Total Spot, Digital, and Total Revenues.”

Reasons Most Consumers Went Online During Pandemic

Even before the pandemic, people were heading online to shop, watch videos, keep up-to-date with friends and family and read the news. However, the pandemic has led to increased use of certain online services. Here’s what a Morning Consult survey of 2,200 US adults shows about who is turning to online services on a daily basis.

The online service that adults have most frequently turned to since February 2020 has been weather services, with 62% of those surveyed in December saying they check the weather online on a daily basis. This is followed closely by the share of those who have gone online to watch TV shows and movies on a daily basis (61%).

About half (51%) of those surveyed are turning to online services on a daily basis in order to communicate with friends and family, while 48% are using online services in order to keep up with the news.

Earlier research from Comscore shows that the average time spent streaming audio online daily had significantly increased between December 2019 and June 2020. Added to that, some 44% of adults from the Morning Consult survey say they are listening to music or podcasts online daily.

Surprisingly, even with stay-at-home mandates and the rise in remote work, only 1 in 5 respondents report that they are working remotely online each day.

Amid this daily use of online technology, some mobile apps have fared better than others. One such technology – and the one Morning Consult named the fastest growing brand for 2020 – is Zoom. Zoom enjoyed a surge of downloads in March 2020, and although it has seen some dips throughout the year, downloads remained high through December.

The same cannot be said for Zoom’s competitor, Google Hangouts, which saw downloads spike early on in March but then tapered off at a steady rate.

Other mobile apps that look to have gained popularity during the pandemic include TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Amazon Shopping, Uber Eats and DoorDash. And, while the social networking app Houseparty looked like it would be popular early on, downloads plummeted by mid-year.

Report: Tony Bennett Reveals Alzheimer's Disease

Tony Bennett has Alzheimer’s disease, an AARP feature story revealed. Bennett, who is 94-years-old, was first diagnosed in 2016.

Alzheimer’s, a spectrum disorder, is the most common form of age-related dementia. More than five million Americans have Alzheimer’s.

“Although he can still recognize family members, he is, according to [his wife], not always sure where he is or what is happening around him,” the article said of the disease’s progression in Bennett’s brain. “Mundane objects as familiar as a fork or a set of house keys can be utterly mysterious to him.”

Wake-Up Call: Biden, GOP Senators To Meet About COVID Relief

President Biden will meet at the White House today with a group of 10 Republican senators who have proposed a coronavirus relief package that's only about one-third of the $1.9 trillion proposal he's put forward. Biden issued the invitation for the meeting hours after the GOP lawmakers sent him a letter urging to negotiate instead of getting his package passed only on Democratic votes. The Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate and could use budget reconciliation rules to avoid the filibuster and get the aid package passed in the Senate with a simple majority. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said yesterday that Biden wants a, quote, "full exchange of views," but remains in favor of a robust relief package, stating, "With the virus posing a grave threat to the country, and economic conditions grim for so many, the need for action is urgent, and the scale of what must be done is large."

➤JANUARY WAS DEADLIEST MONTH OF THE PANDEMIC: January was the deadliest month of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. so far, with more than 95,245 dead for the month as of the last day of January yesterday according to Johns Hopkins University data. That sobering news came as there was also a positive development over the weekend, with less than 100,000 Americans hospitalized for Covid-19 for the first time in almost two months. The COVID Tracking Project reported Sunday that there were 95,013 Covid hospitalizations across the country, after Saturday's number was 97,561, the first time the total has been under 100,00 since December 1st.

➤AFTER DECADES OF DECLINE, SALES OF CIGARETTES FLATTENED IN 2020:
The American Lung Association recently warned that smoking is a risk factor when it comes to getting the most-severe symptoms of COVID-19, which is ironic, because is seems the pandemic has encouraged some to revisit their smoking habit. The Wall Street Journal reports that cigarette sales had been declining for decades at a fairly steady rate, dropping 5.5 percent in 2019, for example. But according to statistics released by Altria Group, which owns the Marlboro brand, cigarette sales in 2020 were simply flat compared to those from 2019—meaning there was no drop in sales. Altria notes that more people may have been tempted to smoke not only because of the stressors of the pandemic, but also due to situational circumstances, like being stuck at home more or having extra money to spend that would normally be put towards gas, entertainment, or vacation. E-cigarette users also started to turn away from vaping, and turning back to traditional cigarettes in some cases, even though experts say e-cigarettes are still safer overall than smoking.

➤AMERICANS USING LESS CASH:  Americans are using less cash during the coronavirus pandemic, and it's not only because of wanting to avoid paper bills and coins because of them potentially being sources of transmission of the virus. Other reasons for the shift toward digital payments include convenience and the fact that more shopping was pushed online due to retail store closures during lockdown and people's caution about being in public places. It's something that's also been seen around the world, and like other things during the pandemic -- such as working from home -- experts say it's speeding up trends that were already happening. Harvard University economic Kenneth Rogoff told the Wall Street Journal, "A central theme of Covid-19 is things that would have taken five years are taking five months, and it’s a reinforcing of existing trends. It’s the same with cash." Americans' use of cash had been gradually declining for years, used in 26 percent of all payments in 2019, down from 40 percent in 2012. What remains to be seen is how much spending will snap back to cash as the pandemic eases and eventually ends.

➤PROTESTS IN RUSSIA FOR SECOND WEEKEND, MORE THAN 5,100 ARRESTED: Tens of thousands of people protested across Russia on Sunday demanding the release from jail of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the second weekend of demonstrations in support of Navalny. More than 5,100 people were arrested during yesterday's massive protests, which took place despite threats and warnings from President Vladimir Putin's government. Navalny’s team called for another protest in Moscow on Tuesday, when he'll have a court hearing that could send him to prison for years. The U.S. criticized the crackdown on protests and urged the release of Navalny, leading Moscow to accuse Washington of trying to destabilize the situation in Russia.

➤MILITARY SEIZES POWER IN MYANMAR, SENIOR POLITICIANS, INCLUDING SUU KYI DETAINED: The military seized power in a coup in Myanmar Monday, declaring a state of emergency and saying it was taking control for one year. Many of the country's senior leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi [CHEE], had been detained. Suu Kyi, as state counsellor, is the nation's top leader. The military said the reason for takeover was in part due to the government’s failure to act on the military’s claims of voter fraud in last November’s election and its failure to postpone the election because of the coronavirus crisis. U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken issued a statement expressing, quote, "grave concern and alarm" over the reported detentions, and calling on the military leaders to, quote, "respect the will of the people . . . as expressed in democratic elections."

➤TRUMP NAMES TWO NEW IMPEACHMENT ATTORNEYS AFTER PREVIOUS LAWYERS DEPART: Former President Donald Trump yesterday announced a team of two new attorneys for his upcoming impeachment trial, one day after it was reported that he'd parted ways with the previous attorneys who were supposed to have been his legal defense team due to differences over legal strategy. AP cited a source as saying Trump wanted them to use a defense that relied on allegations of election fraud, and the lawyers refused to do so. The two new attorneys who will represent Trump are defense attorney David Schoen, a frequent TV legal commentator, and Bruce Castor, a former Pennsylvania district attorney.

➤CHICAGO MAYOR ORDERS TEACHERS BACK TO CLASSROOM: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot yesterday ordered that teachers return to the classroom today. The Chicago Teachers Union has been telling teachers to continue doing remote teaching because of coronavirus safety concerns. Lightfoot, who repeatedly said, "our schools are safe," stated that all pre-K to eighth grade teachers must return to the classroom today and said that if they don't, quote, "we're going to have to take action," without saying what that action would be.

➤POLL: MOMS WANT 'ME TIME' THIS VALENTINE'S DAY:  After a pandemic year in which there was a lot of forced family time together -- for good and for bad -- a new poll finds that what moms want this year is the gift of some "me time," coming in at the top of the list. The survey of 1,000 moms by OnePoll with Zulily found that 55 percent said they've spent too much time with their partner and want a little time to themselves, and when they are with their significant other, they want to make that time, quote, "more meaningful this Valentine's Day," with 46 percent saying they want quality time with their partner. The survey also found how couples' "love languages" -- acts and expressions of love -- have changed during the pandemic, with one-third reporting a change. Love languages now include things like: having partners do household chores; cooking a meal at home; sending and sharing memes; playing video games and other games at home; and lounging with their partner doing absolutely nothing.

🏈NFC WINS VIRTUAL PRO BOWL OVER AFC 32-12: In normal times, the NFL's Pro Bowl would have been held yesterday, the Sunday before the Super Bowl. But because of the coronavirus pandemic, it was canceled this year, and a virtual Pro Bowl was held instead, with current and former NFL stars, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, and rapper Snoop Dogg playing Madden. The NFC team was made up of Kyler Murray, Wallace, Jamal Adams and Marshawn Lynch and the AFC team was Deshaun Watson, Keyshawn Johnson, Derrick Henry and Snoop Dogg. Wallace turned out to be the standout for the NFC, with a three-touchdown second quarter, and his team beat the AFC 32-12.

⚾MLB PROPOSES DELAYING START TO APRIL 28TH, CUTTING SEASON TO 154 GAMES: Major League Baseball has proposed pushing back the start of the season by one month to April 28th, and cutting the season from 162 games to 154, according to media reports. The plan, which was presented to the players' union Friday, would also expand the playoffs from 10 teams to 14, the designated hitter would be used in the National League for a second straight season, and seven-inning doubleheaders and beginning extra innings with a runner on second base would again be used this year after debuting in last year's coronavirus-shortened season. The reasoning for the delay is to get more time for vaccinations and to better assess the health situation.

🏈LIONS QUARTERBACK STAFFORD TRADED TO RAMS FOR GOFF: Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is being traded to the Los Angeles Rams for quarterback Jared Goff and several draft picks, media reports said Saturday night (January 30th). The Lions will get a third-round pick in 2021, a first-round pick in 2022 and a first-round pick in 2023. The deal can't be made official until the start of the new league year on March 17th. The 32-year-old Stafford is leaving Detroit after 12 seasons as the team's all-time leader in every passing category, after being the Number 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft. The 26-year-old Goff was chosen as the Number 1 overall pick in 2016 by the Rams.

🏀NUGGETS END JAZZ WINNING STREAK AT 11 GAMES WITH 128-117 WIN: The Denver Nuggets beat the Utah Jazz 128-117 on Sunday to end Utah's winning streak at 11 games, which was the longest in the NBA so far this season. Denver's Nikola Jokic scored 47 points, matching his career high, 33 of them in the first half.

🏌REED WINS FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN: American Patrick Reed won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego Sunday, coming out on top by five strokes, the biggest margin of victory in his nine career PGA Tour wins. Reed finished at 14-under 274, with five players tied five shots back in second place: Americans Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele and Ryan Palmer; Sweden's Henrik Norlander; and Viktor Hovland of Norway.

Colin Cowherd Launches Podcast Network

As the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the radio industry, Colin Cowherd got a call from IHeartMedia Inc. telling him good news: His show had sold out of advertisements.

Many other radio programs had lost 75% of their ads at a time with no sports and no daily commute, but his show couldn’t find enough slots for all the marketing dollars looking for an outlet.

Sensing an opportunity, Cowherd went to Julie Talbott, who runs iHM’s Premiere Networks, and proposed a new partnership. He would build up a business that could give them 2,000 more hours of programming, and iHM would sell the advertising. But rather than host more shows on the radio, he wanted to start a podcasting company.

Now that plan is taking shape, reports Bloomberg. Cowherd, 57, is creating a new podcast network called The Volume, where he’s the owner and biggest star. Cowherd will host a new podcast, which will anchor a network featuring more than half a dozen shows in total, including a basketball series hosted by LaJethro Jenkins and Dragonfly Jonez, and an NFL-focused program with Aqib Talib.

It’s a sign of the growing power of podcasts that one of the most popular sports radio hosts in the country is putting millions of his own dollars behind a new company. It used to be that hosting a radio show was enough. But Cowherd now reaches more people with other media, such as Facebook videos, than radio. And he knows that most listeners under 40 aren’t tuning in to terrestrial radio or cable TV, even if those are the media that still pay his bills.

“We’re in an on-demand world,” Cowherd said last week, speaking by videoconference from his home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. “You can do real-time commentary now with no barriers. I don’t have to drive to a studio, don’t have to put makeup on. I don’t have to go to a studio and get miked up.”

The pandemic also give Cowherd more time to plan his next steps. An early riser, Cowherd would finish his daily show at noon and have nowhere to go for the rest of the day. He had no sports to watch, no friends to see and no kids at home anymore.

When he got home, he’d scour the internet for promising young radio hosts. At the suggestion of a friend in Chicago, Cowherd tuned into a broadcaster named Danny Parkins. After 15 minutes, Cowherd had heard enough and wanted to offer him a job.

Rather than let iHM or Fox Corp. own his new venture, he wanted to be in control and test out a couple of ideas about the future of sports media. The network will feature a few shows about sports gaming, including one hosted by gambling fanatic Alex Monaco, and another hosted by Parkins. FanDuel Inc., one of the leaders in daily fantasy sports, is the network’s presenting sponsor.

Report: ABC Anchor Jumping To NBC News

Tom Llamas, the ABC News anchor who leads the unit’s weekend “World News Tonight” broadcast and is its chief national affairs correspondent, is jumping from the Disney operation to NBC News, according to Variety citing a person familiar with the matter.

Llamas confirmed his departure from the network on the Jan. 31 edition of “World News Tonight,” saying that it would be his final broadcast.

Llamas, who has been with the Disney-owned operation since 2014 and also anchors breaking events for the news division’s ABC News Live streaming-video service, informed executives at ABC News this week that he would leave, the person said.

ABC News declined to make executives available for comment. NBC News declined to comment. A representative for Llamas also declined to comment.

Llamas enjoyed a senior role at ABC News, but it had become clear to him that his chances of being awarded a permanent chair behind the desk at “World News Tonight,” “Good Morning America” or “20/20” were not likely in the immediate future. David Muir has taken the weekday broadcast of “World News Tonight” to new viewership levels since arriving there in 2014, ,and Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos are mainstays at “GMA.” Executives at ABC News are said to be saddened by Llamas’ departure, but understand his interest in seeking new career paths.

NBC News and its sibling operations represent one of the biggest collection of news assets in the industry, and Llamas could find himself contributing to MSNBC, an expanding streaming operation and more hours of “Today” across the week.

Prior to joining ABC News, Llamas was an investigative reporter and anchor at WNBC, NBC’s flagship New York operation, and was a contributing correspondent at NBC News. Before that, he worked for WTVJ, NBC’s Miami station. He started his career with NBC News’ specials unit and work as a correspondent at MSNBC.

iHM's Brokaw: Audio Ads Are Sanctuary For Maxed-Out Eyes

As president of digital revenue strategy at US radio group iHeartMedia, Carter Brokaw is charged with diversifying and capitalizing upon what, these days, is a spectrum of audio listening and ad opportunities far broader than “radio” itself.

In an interview with Beet.TV, Brokaw explained how new technology is helping him help advertisers to find the perfect audience across a plethora of platforms.

“I think there are a lot of people that are leaning into audio because they’re realizing the intimacy of the messaging,” Brokaw stated.

“The personalization of a lot of that messaging (has) the ability to really connect with people through their ears and not their eyes, which seem to be very maxed out these days.

“Mindshare did a Neurolab study where they looked at brand stories and then a sort of an audio basis versus a visual basis. The ones that are told audibly elicit three times more positive brand associations than the one that do it visually.”

iHeartMedia has what Brokaw calls a “flywheel” of audio touchpoints:

  • 850 broadcast radio stations that reach nine out of 10 Americans
  • more than 220 million social followers
  • almost 30 million unique listeners in podcasting

iHeartRadio now boasts live radio streams, podcasts, music playlists, and “artist-radio” station. Across iHeart’s scale, the stats are impressive:

  • 144 million registered users
  • 250+ platforms and 2,000+ devices
  • 2,500+ live stations
  • 2.2 billion downloads
  • Podcasts in focus

Brokaw says emerging digital audio formats offer advertisers heightened consumer attention.

“What’s unique about podcasting is that people are really not consuming other mediums or other media while they’re listening to audio,” he says. “You have this really fertile environment for brands to trade on the currency between an audience and a host.

“In our particular case, we do 100% host-read ads. So taking advantage of that sort of cachet has really brought to life a lot of the great storytelling that exists in audio.

Digital News Consumption Dominates

This past election saw record numbers of voters. There were numerous comparisons of Americans’ voting behaviors after the election. Blue vs. Red. Urban vs. Rural. And Young vs. Older voters. In fact, younger voters (under 30) voted across most States by a margin of 20% or more on behalf of President Joe Biden than for former President Donald Trump.

Now, Mike Vorhaus, a Contributor at Forbes, reports a survey released after the election by the highly-regarded Pew Research Center shows that over two-thirds of 18-29 year old voters often get their news from devices such as phones, computers and tablets. In strong contrast, less than a majority of the 65 year old and older voters report they use digital sources to get news often. The 55 to 65 year old group is also heavily oriented to traditional news sources, while the 30 to 49 year old and older voters acted more like their younger fellow citizens, focusing more on digital sources for getting their news, than from traditional media like televisions, radio and print.

To further show the dramatic behavior differences in sources of news among voters in America, note that 16% of the youngest age group often used TV to get news while 68% of the oldest group used TV often to get their news.

Newspapers are primarily a news resource for older populations, while younger people focus on digital news outlets.

It is also striking that only 3% of voters under 30 years old used print newspapers to get their news often, but 25% of the older voters (65 and above) said TV was a frequent source of news for them.

Across all age groups more than half of U.S. voters said they prefer digital devices for getting their news. Television only had 35% of all voters saying they preferred to get their news from TV. Not surprisingly, radio and newspapers only had 7% and 5% preference choice, respectively.

So what does this mean for people covering the news and those consuming the news:

  • Reporters and news outlets need to write for mobile devices - not just for a long printed newspaper article. Mobile news calls for a liberal use of headlines and subheadlines, photos, and short, scannable sentences and paragraphs.
  • Government and political officials need to recognize that their messaging is often being consumed on mobile devices and they need to release the news or their opinions in formats and platforms that will appeal to young voters using mobile devices.
  • The average citizen should be aware that longer, more in-depth analyses may exist in traditional sources on important issues and newsworthy figures.
  • Likewise, reporters, editors, newsmakers, and the average person must recognize that social media has become a major outlet for news, which often means the news is being “reported” by a wide variety of types of folks, many of whom may be relying on other news or opinion that are “second-hand”.

Study: 57% Of Consumers Say FB, Amazon, Google Are 'Essential'

Consumers now feel that online platforms are essential services despite the fact that they don’t believe businesses always act in their best interest, according to Vision 2021: 10 Trends That Will Shape The Future of Commerce, a study by Vertex and Future Commerce in partnership with Method + Mode.

Of those polled, 57% think Facebook, Amazon and Google are essential.

At the same time, 26% have upgraded their at-home technology to accommodate increased onscreen time, according to Mediapost

Email creative teams, take note: Minimalism is out, and is now being replaced by minimalism as consumers shelter in their homes, according to Vision 2021: 16 Trends That Will Shape The Future of Commerce, a study by Vertex.

People want to load up on familiar things, both online and in the physical world. For instance, 52% say being with their own “stuff” makes them happy. And 60% feel that surrounding themselves with things makes them feel safe and in control.

This would include textbooks, home libraries and “tchotchke-laden Zoom backgrounds.”

That desire for the familiar leads almost 65% to prefer interacting with people in their homes. The remainder would rather do so in someone else’s home.

Meanwhile, 50% are more aware of their appearance a result of having to appear on Zoom. And 38% are more critical of their own appearance and that of other people.

In another finding, only 37% believe non-profit organizations should step in where government fails.  And, 47% feel the Internet should be free and unrelated.

➦In 1942…Even before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. government’s Office of the Coordinator of Information (COI, in Washington) had already begun providing war news and commentary to the commercial American shortwave radio stations for use on a voluntary basis through its Foreign Information Service (FIS, in New York) headed by playwright Robert E. Sherwood, the playwright who served as president Roosevelt’s speech writer and information advisor.

Direct programming began a week after the United States’ entry into World War II in December 1941, with the first broadcast from the San Francisco office of the FIS via a leased General Electric’s transmitter to the Philippines in English (other languages followed). The next step was to broadcast to Germany, which was called Stimmen aus Amerika ("Voices from America") and was transmitted on February 1, 1942. It was introduced by "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and included the pledge: "Today, and every day from now on, we will be with you from America to talk about the war... The news may be good or bad for us – We will always tell you the truth."

It was Sherwood who actually coined the term "The Voice of America" to describe the shortwave network that began its transmissions on February 1, from 270 Madison Avenue in New York City.

The governor asked the state broadcasters’ association to ban the record. at the time, the song was #6 on the Billobard Hot 100.  The song's publisher, Max Firetag, offered  $1000 to anyone who can prove that the song contains obscene lyrics. The FBI became involved and they determined the lyrics of the song were unintelligible.

➦In 1980... Sears Radio Theater moves from CBS to Mutual Broadcasting System.

➦In 1986....Classic Top40  KHJ-AM in Los Angeles changed its call letters to KRTH-AM.  On the evening of January 31, 1986, regular evening jock Dave Sebastian Williams was joined in studio by Robert W. Morgan. Many disc jockeys from throughout KHJ's heyday of Boss Radio phoned in (including M.G. Kelly, Bobby Ocean, Jimmy Rabbitt, and Boss Radio-era Program Director Ron Jacobs) for a farewell broadcast, playing the songs that had made KHJ a popular AM station in the 1960s and 1970s. At the stroke of midnight, the station changed its call letters to KRTH to match those of its FM sister station, KRTH-FM playing a format called "Smokin' Oldies" that featured hits of the first ten years of rock and roll. The station used "AM 930" as its on-air ID.

RKO General was under nearly continuous investigation by federal regulators from the 1960s onward due to unethical conduct at its television stations, including KRTH-AM/FM's television sister, KHJ-TV (channel 9, now KCAL-TV). It was eventually ruled unfit to be a broadcast licensee and forced by the FCC to sell off its broadcast properties.

In the summer of 1989, KRTH AM/FM were sold to Beasley Broadcasting, which immediately turned around and sold KRTH-AM to Liberman Broadcasting. It became a full-time Spanish-language station, adopting the call letters KKHJ in honor of its historic calls.

As time went by, program director Alfredo Rodriguez and chief engineer Jerry Lewine wanted to bring back the legendary three-letter call sign. However, the FCC hadn't issued three-letter calls to radio stations since the 1930s. So they came up with a plan to convince the FCC that KKHJ could not use the Spanish pronunciation of its call letters on the air. This was purportedly because the pronunciation of the first two letters in Spanish (kah-kah), the Spanish vulgar slang word for feces.

As a result, whenever the call letters were used, they were pronounced in English. This proved somewhat awkward over a decade, so the station collected letters from listeners and community listeners and lobbied the FCC to allow the station to drop one of its Ks. The FCC allowed the station to return to its original calls, KHJ. The change became official on March 15, 2000.

➦In 1985...

➦In 1989…WEVD switched from 97.9 FM to 1050 AM.

In 1988, Emmis Broadcasting acquired the license of WNBC and moved WFAN from 1050 to 660 AM.  Emmis sold the license for 1050 to Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS), which quickly agreed to trade that license with cash to the Forward Association for WEVD-FM. Until the latter transaction was approved, SBS operated 1050 as a Spanish-language station called WUKQ.  When the deal was finally consummated, WEVD moved its call letters and programming to 1050 and the former WEVD-FM became WSKQ-FM. WEVD gradually replaced much of its brokered ethnic programming with liberal talk shows over the next several years; it gained some loyal listeners, but not enough to keep the station economically viable.

In 2001, the Forward Association entered into a local marketing agreement with ESPN, and WEVD began broadcasting a sports format on September 2 of that year. In 2003 the station was sold outright to ESPN and its call letters changed to WEPN.
