At CRS 2024, the AI Town Hall session took center stage, unraveling the complexities of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into radio formats. This topic has sparked both excitement and apprehension within the industry.
Notably, in June 2023, Alpha Media’s Live 95.5 (KBFF) in Portland, OR, made broadcasting history by creating an AI version of their human midday host, Ashley Elzinga. Known as AI Ashley, she participated in the panel discussion titled “Chat GBT: The Good, The Bad, And The Truth.”
During this session, several key points were addressed:
Advancements in AI:
- AI technology has made significant strides in a short time. AI Ashley’s practical use in radio includes generating creative content like liners and sweeps.
- However, human program directors remain irreplaceable, emphasizing the value of human expertise in shaping radio content.
Audacy’s Application of AI:
- Audacy utilizes AI for tasks such as creating network tags and simulating listener voices.
- Despite AI’s ability to refine music logs, human curators still shoulder significant workloads.
Legal Considerations:
- Copyright attorney Anna Chauvet raised concerns about Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rules in the context of AI. Contracts need language to protect talent from inadvertently endorsing products or services.
Legal landscape:
- While there’s no federal right of publicity, state-level protections exist.
- FCC compliance: AI-generated commercial drafts must be carefully reviewed to meet regulations and serve the community responsibly.
In his daily blog, Fred Jacobs recaps the AI discussion at CRS and shares some AI results uncovered in the 2024 Techsurvey:
