Wake-Up Call: Pence..Trump 'Part of the Problem'

Daily Mail composite 11/14/22

Former Vice President Mike Pence said in an exclusive interview with ABC's "World News Tonight" anchor David Muir that former President Donald Trump's rhetoric was "reckless" as a mob of his supporters ransacked the Capitol last year -- with Pence and others temporarily forced into hiding. "I mean, the president's words were reckless. It was clear he decided to be part of the problem," Pence told Muir. Pence said he was "angered" over a tweet from Trump as the insurrection unfolded, when the former president said he "didn't have the courage to do what should have been done" after he rebuffed pressure to not certify now-President Joe Biden's 2020 victory.

➤DEMS MIDTERM ELECTION PERFORMANCE DEFIED EXPECTATIONS:  President Joe Biden's party won the Senate while the House of Representatives - which had long been projected to gain at least 30 GOP seats - is still in play but leaning Republican. In a pair of Sunday news talk show interviews, Pelosi partially credited Biden for Democrats' strong performance and gave a full-throated endorsement for the president to run a second term. On the GOP side, she suggested to CNN's State of the Union that Republicans' 'horrible response' to her husband Paul's assault could be partially to blame for turning voters off from their candidates. Pelosi told the network that Paul was 'closer to recovery' each day but that it would be 'a long haul' after an intruder who espoused QAnon beliefs online broke into their home late last month and ended up assaulting him with a hammer - all while looking for the Speaker herself, who was not home.

➤STILL TOO CLOSE TO CALL: Control of the U.S. House of Representatives hinged on Monday on several tight races that could secure a majority for Republicans following midterm elections that saw President Joe Biden's Democrats beat expectations and retain the Senate.  Republicans were closer to winning the House, having secured 211 seats compared to Democrats' 206, with 218 needed for a majority. But the final outcome might not be known for days as officials continue counting ballots nearly a week after Americans went to the polls. There are still some 18 outstanding House races, including 13 considered closely competitive, according to a Reuters compilation of the leading nonpartisan forecasters. Ten of the remaining contests were in liberal-leaning California.  A Republican victory in the House would set the stage for two years of divided government while giving Biden's opponents the power to limit his political agenda and launch potentially damaging probes into his administration and family.

➤REPUBLICANS DIDN'T GET INDY VOTES:  Republicans succeeded in one of their top goals this year: They brought more of their party’s voters to the polls than did Democrats. But in the course of energizing their core voters, Republicans in many states lost voters in the political center—both independents and many Republicans who are uneasy with elements of the party’s focus under Mr. Trump. Control of the House and Senate, which had seemed poised to land with the Republican Party, is coming down to a handful of races that so far are too close to call, though the GOP remains on track to winning a narrow majority in the House. Republicans have won nearly 5.5 million more votes in House races than have Democrats, a tally by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report finds, as many voters were motivated by anxiety over high inflation and a low opinion of President Biden’s response.

At the same time, Republican analysts said their unexpectedly weak showing in the election indicated that they had failed to press hard enough on those issues. In Michigan, the Republican Party’s state committee said a failure to talk to voters in the political center was a central reason that Tudor Dixon, the party’s Trump-endorsed nominee for governor, was crushed in a 10 percentage point defeat by Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

🚀SCIENTISTS PRESENT THEORY ABOUT WHY WE HAVEN'T MET OTHER INTELLIGENT LIFE: NASA argues all intelligent life has likely destroyed itself before reaching a sophisticated enough point in evolution to be able to have an encounter with Earth. The “Great Filter” theory as in “filtering out” various forms of life argues that other civilizations, possibly several, have existed during the life of the universe.  Scientists believe the same fate likely awaits the human race unless we take action because they think all intelligent life, such as humans, have deeply ingrained dysfunctions that may “snowball quickly into the Great Filter.”

💩THESE ARE THE BEST AND WORST TOILET PAPERS FOR THE PLANET:
The U.S. tops all other countries in its annual per capita usage of toilet paper rolls according to 2018 data. And not all toilet papers are created equal when it comes to their contribution to climate change. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council’s (NRDC) latest version of it’s annual “Issue with Tissue” report and scorecard, some major companies are fueling climate change by using virgin forest fiber from Canada’s vast and vital boreal forest to make their products. Some brands that got an “A” Sustainability Score were: Green Forest, Trader Joe’s Bath Tissue, and Seventh Generation Extra Strong and Soft, while at the other end of the spectrum were these brands, which were among those that got an “F” Sustainability Score: Charmin (Ultra Soft, Ultra Gentle, and Ultra Strong), Kirkland Signature, Quilted Northern Ultra Plush, and Scott 1,000 Sheets Per Roll. The group says the most sustainable type of toilet paper to buy is one made from 100% recycled content with “at least 50% post-consumer recycled content.”

🌩LIGHTNING PATTERNS CHANGE WITH GLOBAL WARMING:  Where lightning strikes could change with global warming. Newcastle University researchers found that climate change could lead to more lightning strikes over mountains and in Northern Europe and less lightning over central Europe. They also predict climate change could lead to “more frequent storms with more energy, but locally less lightning mainly due to less cloud ice and frozen particles in storm clouds, with warming." They say these changes could also lead to an increased risk of wildfires over the mountains and in Northern Europe, but on the upside, there could be “relatively fewer lightning hazards over more populated areas of Central Europe.” More research is needed so scientists can make recommendations about critical infrastructure systems, and recommendations about policies that are relevant for adaptation planning.
