A Milwaukee
talk radio host is being criticized for comments he made about the Derek
Williams case.
WISN-TV (not affiliated with WISDN Radio) is reporting protesters
gathered Thursday outside the Milwaukee
offices of Clear Channel Radio to rally against WISN-AM host Mark Belling.
Belling referred to Derek Williams, the man who died in
police custody in July of 2011, as a "thug."
He went on to ask why groups angry about Williams' death
don't give the same attention to co-sleeping deaths, referring to mothers as
"pigs as they roll over on their children."
"This is the day we stand up and tell people 'No
more,'" said Rev. Willie Brisco of
the Milwaukee Inner City Congregations Allied Hope. "You're not going to
be able to discriminate against us without us having something to say and do
something about it."
Clear Channel Radio released a written statement stating
that Belling is a "tough, thoughtful critic with a clear, well-known point
of view."
The statement went on to say "His discussion of the
Derek Williams issue had absolutely nothing to do with race, and the claim that
it did is a transparent attempt by a few opportunists to manufacture a
controversy they can exploit for their own benefit."
