April 24 Radio History
➦In 1947...Jack Webb introduced his short-lived pre-Dragnet detective-adventure radio show Johnny Madero: Pier 23 on Mutual. His first post-San Francisco series (from Hollywood) featured those radio stalwarts Gale Gordon & William Conrad in the supporting cast.
➦In 1949…Dick Powell began a four-year run as "Richard Diamond, Private Detective" on NBC Radio. In the late 1950s, Powell's company, Four Star Television, produced a TV version of the series starring David Janssen. His secretary, Sam, was shown only from the waist down to display her beautiful legs. Initially, those were the legs of budding actress Mary Tyler Moore, but later, the legs of other actresses were shown.
➦In 1953...Eric Bogosian was born in Woburn, Massachusetts. Bogosian is best known for his starring role in the movie, Talk Radio.
➦In 1954...Billboard magazine, the music industry trade publication, headlined a tsunami to come in the music biz. The headline read, “Teenagers Demand Music with a Beat — Spur Rhythm and Blues” … a sign of the entertainment revolution that was underway.
➦In 1959…After 24 years of Saturday nights on radio and nine years on television, the final installment of the musical countdown show "Your Hit Parade" was presented on NBC-TV.
The final Top Five: Elvis Presley, "I Need Your Love Tonight" (#5), Brook Benton, "It's Just A Matter Of Time" (#4), Ricky Nelson, "Never Be Anyone Else But You" (#3), Dodie Stevens, "Pink Shoe Laces" (#2), and the Fleetwoods at #1 with "Come Softly To Me."
➦In 1972…John Lennon's controversial single, "Woman Is the N#gger of the World" was released in the U.S. The song reached #57 on the Billboard Hot 100, even though only two major radio stations – KDAY in Los Angeles and WCFL in Chicago – aired it. Yoko Ono originally uttered the phrase during a magazine interview in 1967 and John explained that he was making a point that women deserved higher status in society.

ComScore Taps Bryan Wiener as CEO
![]() |
| Bryan Score |
Mr. Wiener is currently executive chairman of Dentsu Inc. -owned ad and media agency 360i, and he has been on comScore’s board since October 2017. ComScore has been without a CEO since November, when co-founder Gian Fulgoni retired from the position.
In his new role, Wiener will be charged with turning the business around following a string of accounting crises and losses.
In a March regulatory filing, the company reported that it incurred net losses of $281.4 million in 2017, $117.2 million in 2016 and $78.2 million in 2015, in addition to disclosing restated results for 2014 and 2013 that also amounted to losses. The SEC is investigating allegations regarding “revenue recognition, internal controls, non-GAAP disclosures and whistleblower retaliation,” according to the filing. “We are cooperating fully with the SEC,” comScore said in the filing.
“The worst is behind us,” Mr. Wiener said in an interview. “The last two years were a very difficult time. It was hard to innovate at the speed we wanted to innovate with that cloud over our head.”
Now, comScore’s goal is to create excitement and provide the marketplace with a third-party referee that can help brands measure media performance across digital and traditional platforms, he said. Wiener’s plan is to streamline operations that are too complex and inefficient, focus on building products that support cross-platform measurement and sell comScore to the industry in a more compelling way.ComScore is one of only a few large companies that measure media consumption. Nielsen, the largest player in the industry, has a stronghold on national TV viewing, with its metrics serving as the currency in transactions between ad buyers and sellers. ComScore tracks local TV, digital publishing and digital ads, as well as film performance. Ad holding company giant WPP has about a 20% stake in comScore.
Report: Sean Hannity Has Real Estate Empire
When Sean Hannity was named in court last week as a client of Donald Trump’s embattled legal fixer Michael Cohen, the Fox News host insisted their discussions had been limited to the subject of buying property.
“I’ve said many times on my radio show: I hate the stock market, I prefer real estate. Michael knows real estate,” Hannity said on television, a few hours after the dramatic hearing in Manhattan, where Cohen is under criminal investigation.
According to The Guardian, Hannity’s chosen investment strategy is confirmed by thousands of pages of public records reviewed by the Guardian, which detail a real estate portfolio of remarkable scale that has not previously been reported.

Dozens of the properties were bought at a discount in 2013, after banks foreclosed on their previous owners for defaulting on mortgages. Before and after then, Hannity sharply criticized Barack Obama for the US foreclosure rate. In January 2016, Hannity said there were “millions more Americans suffering under this president” partly because of foreclosures.
Hannity, 56, also amassed part of his property collection with support from the US Department for Housing and Urban Development (Hud), a fact he did not disclose when praising Ben Carson, the Hud secretary, on his television show last year.
Christopher Reeves, Hannity’s real estate attorney, said in an email he would “struggle to find any relevance” in Hannity’s property holdings, which he said were highly confidential.
“I doubt you would find it very surprising that most people prefer to keep their legal and personal financial issues private,” said Reeves. “Mr Hannity is no different.”
In their report, The Guardian also noted that while Hannity had Carson on his program last summer, he did not disclose financial ties to HUD to the show’s audience. He did, however, praise Carson, saying he’s “done a good job.”
Spokespeople for Hud and Fox News declined to comment on the record.

Talker Ed Schultz Charges MSNBC With News Bias
Anyone needing direct confirmation that MSNBC perpetrates biased news, should listen to Ed Schultz who used to host a show at that network.
In an podcast interview with Jamie Weinstein of the National Revew, Schultz claimed that the president of MSNBC contacted him just minutes before he was due to broadcast the official kickoff of the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign and demanded he cover another topic instead. Schultz also claims that because MSNBC was so far in the bag with Hillary Clinton that he was subsequently fired from that network for supporting Sanders.
Newsbusters repoirts Schultz talked about the differences between MSNBC which he left in July 2015 and RT America where he now works. He also revealed how blatantly the head of MSNBC interfered to take away live coverage of Sanders' campaign announcement:
SCHULTZ: ...Many times I was told what to lead with on MSNBC. Many times I was told what I was not going to do. And I've got a story that had I not been involved in it I would never have believed it and Phil Griffin who I consider a friend to this day was a watchdog far more than anything I am exposed to here at RT America.
WEINSTEIN: Did he tell you what to say? Did he tell you an angle to take?
SCHULTZ: Often. In fact, when Bernie Sanders was announcing that he was going to be a candidate for the nomination of the Democratic Party in Burlington, Vermont I was the only cable host between FOX, MSNBC, and CNN that was there to cover it live. Now there were live cameras there but we had coordinated with the Sanders campaign that at 5 o'clock that he was going to make his announcement and we were going to cover this on the Ed Show. I go to Bernie Sanders house that afternoon and interview in the backyard. About a 15 minute interview. The grandkids are running around. It's a big day for the Sanders family. He's going to announce that he's running for president. We're gonna carry it live later on in the day and we're gonna run this one-on-one tape with Bernie. Three thousand people are there on Lake Champlain. It's five minutes to air and I get a phone call from Phil Griffin: "You're not covering this!" I said, "Phil, Bernie Sanders is announcing he's running for president. He's gonna be president. "I don't care, you're not covering this!" And it got rather contentious.
Schultz then gave his opinion on the reason why his interview with Sanders was pulled at the last minute:
SCHULTZ: We're covering Bernie Sanders live. We're coordinated with his campaign. And I'm told five minutes before you're not covering Bernie Sanders. Now let me give you the opinion. I think the Clintons were connected to Andy Lack, connected at the hip. I think they didn't want anybody in their prime time or anywhere in their lineup supporting Bernie Sanders. I think that they were in the take for Hillary Clinton. And I think it was managed and 45 days later I was out at MSNBC and I thought it stunk."
New Ad Placement Scandal Hits YouTube
A year ago, news reports that YouTube was placing ads against violent and extremist videos led to a broad boycott, which led hundreds of advertisers to halt spending, including P&G, AT&T, Dish Network and PepsiCo. Last fall, YouTube was hit again by a backlash over ads on videos that attracted child predators.
But despite its pledges to address the “brand safety” crisis, YouTube is still delivering unpleasant surprises to Madison Avenue, according to Variety.
On Thursday, CNN reported that ad spots from 300-plus companies and government agencies ran on YouTube channels “promoting white nationalists, Nazis, pedophilia, conspiracy theories and North Korean propaganda.” The ads were for companies including Netflix, Amazon, Netflix, the New York Times Co., Adidas, Hershey and Hilton — which were unaware that their marketing messages were running against such content, per the report. Under Armour told CNN that it was suspend YouTube spending for now.
In response, YouTube reiterated that it continues to work on improving its processes for serving ads. “We have partnered with our advertisers to make significant changes to how we approach monetization on YouTube with stricter policies, better controls and greater transparency,” a rep for YouTube said in a statement.
Despite the latest revelations, P&G on Friday said it will now be advertising on YouTube after a year-long break.
Is Redstone Pay A Waste Of CBS Assets?
CBS Corp. directors must face investors’ claims they improperly granted network owner Sumner Redstone millions in compensation after he became incapacitated in 2014, reports Bloomberg.
Shareholders can press forward with claims Redstone was unjustly enriched through compensation the board gave him after his health issues made it difficult to function and that pay was a waste of corporate assets, Delaware Chancery Court Judge Andre Bouchard has concluded. Bouchard also dismissed investors’ challenges to some of Redstone’s compensation that reduces the amount at issue in the case to about $4 million from $13.5 million.
The decision comes as CBS executives are weighing whether to merge with Viacom Inc., the media conglomerate that owns MTV and Comedy Central. Billionaire Redstone, 94, controls both CBS and Viacom with his family.
“While we believe the case should have been dismissed in its entirety, this was just a procedural ruling that allows a small part of the case to proceed past the preliminary stages,’’ Dana McClintock, a CBS spokesman, said in an emailed statement.
Redstone’s mental health was at the center of a more than yearlong fight over Viacom. The dispute pitted the billionaire against his granddaughter, ex-Viacom allies and old friends. The settlement of the dispute cleared the way for Shari Redstone, the founder’s daughter, to take a more prominent role on Viacom’s board after the company’s CEO was ousted.
CBS investors contend Redstone’s mental competence was called into question after reports surfaced in 2014 that he wasn’t attending the network’s board meetings and was having trouble speaking. He was awarded pay and bonuses after he could no longer provide “meaningful services to CBS,’’ shareholders’ lawyers argued in court filings.

Tampa Radio: Distracted Driver Plunges Off Interstate
A radio distracted driver walked away unscathed after his car plunged 50 feet off Interstate 275, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The Tampa Bay Times reports 61-year-old Thomas Highhouse was driving his 2016 Chevrolet Camaro south on Interstate 275 when he looked down at his car stereo to adjust it, the FHP said.
He "failed to maintain control of the vehicle" and drove into the center median, trooper said, then the Camaro went airborne and plunged more than 50 feet down the bridge embankment.
Highhouse spoke to WFLA-TV News at the scene of the accident, though he was reportedly too embarrassed to talk on camera. He told the reporter that he glanced down at the radio for a few seconds, and when he looked back up he realized he was speeding towards the center divider. Unable to recover in time, he launched into the air for a brief but terrifying flight during which he concluded he was definitely going to die.
Thankfully, he survived. He points to his seat belt as the reason, which should kind of be a given at this point in time. But since he escaped injury, the Florida Highway patrol felt free to add a little insult and cited him for careless driving.
No word on Highhouse's choice of stations.

April 23 Radio History
➦In 1995...Howard Cosell, ABC Radio Sports, died
After the war, Cosell began practicing law in Manhattan, primarily in union law. Some of his clients were actors, and some were athletes, including Willie Mays. Cosell's own hero in athletics was Jackie Robinson, who served as a personal and professional inspiration to him in his career. Cosell also represented the Little League of New York, when in 1953 an ABC Radio manager asked him to host a show on New York flagship WABC featuring Little League participants. The show marked the beginning of a relationship with WABC and ABC Radio that would last his entire broadcasting career.
Cosell hosted the Little League show for three years without pay, and then decided to leave the law field to become a full-time broadcaster. He approached Robert Pauley, President of ABC Radio, with a proposal for a weekly show. Pauley told him the network could not afford to develop untried talent, but he would be put on the air if he would get a sponsor. To Pauley's surprise, Cosell came back with a relative's shirt company as a sponsor, and "Speaking of Sports" was born.
Cosell took his "tell it like it is" approach when he teamed with the ex-Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher "Big Numba Thirteen" Ralph Branca on WABC's pre- and post-game radio shows of the New York Mets in their nascent years beginning in 1962. He pulled no punches in taking members of the hapless expansion team to task.
Otherwise on radio, Cosell did his show, Speaking of Sports, as well as sports reports and updates for affiliated radio stations around the country; he continued his radio duties even after he became prominent on television. Cosell then became a sports anchor at WABC-TV in New York, where he served in that role from 1961 to 1974. He expanded his commentary beyond sports to a radio show entitled "Speaking of Everything".
Cosell's style of reporting very much transformed sports broadcasting. Whereas previous sportscasters had mostly been known for color commentary and lively play-by-play, Cosell had an intellectual approach. His use of analysis and context arguably brought television sports reporting very close to the kind of in-depth reporting one expected from "hard" news reporters. At the same time, however, his distinctive staccato voice, accent, syntax, and cadence were a form of color commentary all their own.
➦In 2004…Southern California radio-TV sportscaster Bill Brundige died of heart failure at age 89.

| Bill Brundige |
Later, Brundige was an announcer for baseball's Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Senators, and football's Detroit Lions. It was Phil Wrigley, owner of the Cubs, who brought Brundige to Southern California to broadcast games for the Angels, a minor league team that had the name long before Gene Autry purchased an American League expansion team that began play in 1961.
In 1964, Brundige founded an auto glass company in Orange County that bears his name. He retired after ending a broadcasting career of more than 40 years with a talk show on Anaheim's KEZY.
