Pew: Affordability Main Driver Of Cord Cutters

Three notable changes relating to digital access and digital divides are occurring in the realm of personal connectivity, according to new findings from Pew Research Center surveys.
  • First, home broadband adoption seems to have plateaued. It now stands at 67% of Americans, down slightly from 70% in 2013, a small but statistically significant difference which could represent a blip or might be a more prolonged reality. This change moves home broadband adoption to where it was in 2012.
  • Second, this downtick in home high-speed adoption has taken place at the same time there has been an increase in “smartphone-only” adults – those who own a smartphone that they can use to access the internet, but do not have traditional broadband service at home. Today smartphone adoption has reached parity with home broadband adoption (68% of Americans now report that they own a smartphone), and 13% of Americans are “smartphone-only” – up from 8% in 2013.
  • Third, 15% of American adults report they have become “cord cutters” – meaning they have abandoned paid cable or satellite television service. Many of these cord cutters say that the availability of televised content from the internet and other sources is a factor in their move away from subscription television services.
Young adults are the most likely cord cutters; 19% of adults between the ages of 18 and 29 have severed the ties that they once had with cable or satellite service. Another 16% of young adults say they have never had pay TV in the first place.

Affordability is a main driver for those without cable or satellite, as is the ability to view the content they want to watch somewhere else. Some 71% of cord cutters say that they cut the cord in part because the cost of cable or satellite service is too expensive, while 64% say they can access the content they want using an over-air antenna, on the internet or using streaming services.

Pandora Signs Performance Deals With ASCAP, BMI

Pandora and ASCAP and BMI, the world’s leading Performance Rights Organizations, today announced the signing of two separate multi-year licensing agreements for their combined catalogs of more than 20 million musical works.

These deals create business benefits for Pandora, while modernizing compensation in the U.S. for ASCAP and BMI songwriters and publishers. In connection with the signing of the BMI agreement, Pandora has agreed to withdraw its appeal of the May 2015 order in the recent BMI rate case.

“This agreement is good news for music fans and music creators, who are the heart and soul of ASCAP, and a sign of progress in our ongoing push for improved streaming payments for songwriters, composers and music publishers that reflect the immense value of our members’ creative contributions,” said ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews.

“We’re extremely pleased to reach this deal with Pandora that benefits the songwriters, composers and publishers we are privileged to represent,” said Mike O’Neill, President and CEO, BMI. “Not only is our new agreement comparable to the other direct deals in the marketplace, but it also allows us to amicably conclude our lengthy rate court litigation and focus on what drives each of our businesses – the music.”

“At Pandora we are delivering on our commitment to ensure that music thrives,” said Brian McAndrews, chief executive officer of Pandora. “These collaborative efforts with the leading Performance Rights Organizations, as well as our recent direct deals with several music publishers demonstrate our progress in working together to grow the music ecosystem.”

While the specific terms of both multi-year agreements are confidential, for each deal, the respective parties worked together to build an innovative approach to public performance licensing. The deals allow both ASCAP and BMI to further their goal of delivering improved performance royalties for their songwriters and publishers, while Pandora will benefit from greater rate certainty and the ability to add new flexibility to the company's product offering over time

KHTI 103.9 FM (180 watts) Red=Local Coverage
The San Bernardino-based station has been a champion of local music. “ X1039 has been a huge part of my life for nearly 20 years, so this is like losing a best friend. I’m certain that many of you feel the same, as you’ve grown up with us,” program director and on-air host John DeSantis posted on Facebook.
"It is with extreme sadness that I make the following announcement. As of 7am tomorrow, December 22nd, after 20 years as The Inland Empire’s Alternative Rock, X1039 will no longer exist. The station is changing formats.
I know this sucks. Probably hard to believe. I fully understand. You should’ve seen my face when I was told. X1039 has been a huge part of my life for nearly 20 years, so this is like losing a best friend. I’m certain that many of you feel the same, as you’ve grown up with us.
Our owners and management have always been super supportive of our efforts at X1039, so please know that this was not an easy decision for them. They love the Alternative Rock format, and did everything in their power to make it work. I’m very proud of all that we accomplished here, in spite of many obstacles and challenges.
We competed with huge Los Angeles stations, as well as giant heritage stations in our own backyard. And we actually won many times in spite of the odds. Those victories will always be special to me.
Many incredible DJ’s have cracked this microphone over the years; from our first jock Lisa Axe, to Doug, Nick, Daryl and me. We broke many new artists and songs, put on some pretty awesome shows, threw some major parties and we have always heavily supported the local music scene. So many great memories. Please never forget them.
Thanks to anyone and everyone that has had anything at all to do with this station’s success; from our clients and business partners, to program directors, record labels, venues, promoters, DJ’s, interns, bands, managers, and agents. We could not have come this far without you. Most of all I want to thank the X1039 listener. You’ve been through the ups and downs with us, and were always there for us. It is, unfortunately, the end of an era. Great things are coming to 103.9, and I hope you’ll check it out. But nothing will erase the last two decades, and all we’ve experienced.
ThanX for listening! John DeSantis X1039 Program Director

FNC To Host Final GOP Debate

FOX News Channel (FNC) announced Monday that the network will host its second Republican presidential primary debate on Thursday, January 28, 2016 from Des Moines, Iowa.

The two-hour debate will be presented live from the Iowa Events Center at 9PM/ET on FNC, as well as the network’s additional platforms, including FOX News Radio, FOX News Mobile and FOXNews.com. FNC’s first Republican primary debate on August 6th delivered a record-breaking 24 million viewers and was the highest-rated non-sports cable broadcast of all time.

Special Report anchor Bret Baier, The Kelly File anchor Megyn Kelly and FOX News Sunday host Chris Wallace will return as moderators for the last contest among the candidates before the Iowa Caucus on February 1, 2016. The criteria for candidate entry to the debate will be announced closer to the date.

Following the debate, FNC will present special live daytime and primetime programming from the Hawkeye state in the days leading up to the Iowa Caucus as the first votes are cast in the 2016 election.

ABC's Saturday night debate last weekend , moderated by David Muir and Martha Raddatz, averaged 8.47 million viewers between 8:30 and 10:30pm, according to Nielsen data that arrived right before deadline time.

The viewership for CBS's Saturday night Democratic debate last month was roughly the same -- 8.5 million. The only other Dem debate of the cycle, televised by CNN, averaged 15.3 million viewers on a Tuesday night in October.

Steve Harvey May Have Fallen On The Sword

Steve Harvey
Steve Harvey took the blame for perhaps the most epic beauty pageant host blunder of all time on Sunday night’s Miss Universe 2015 Pageant, but some are pointing to a backstage Snapchat video as proof the mistake may have been someone else's, according to Fox News.

A seven-second behind-the-scenes video shows Harvey immediately after naming the wrong winner -- Miss Colombia instead of Miss Philippines -- pointing to a cue card and talking to an unidentified person saying: “The teleprompter said Miss Universe – Colombia.”

Snapchat is a social media platform that features user-generated short videos. The video in question looks as if it were posted on the Miss Universe Snapchat channel, but it is no longer there. It has however been shared multiple times by users, including a pageant queen from the Miss America organization, Miss Alabama Meg McGuffin, who wrote: “Watch the Miss Universe snap story…Harvey says, “The TelePrompter said Miss Universe-Colombia”…someone in production is fired….”

Sports Illustrated writer Kenny Ducey tweeted, “Conspiracy theory #2 – the teleprompter.”

Another social media user, Taylor Ramsey, weighed in: “Teleprompter was wrong.  Yes he had a card, but we all know the card is just for show…from #Miss Universe snapchat.”

Harvey immediately apologized for the mistake calling it a “human error,” and apologized on Twitter.

“I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.”

The Miss Universe organization issued a statement on Sunday night for the mix-up without placing blame on any particular individual.

CBS News reportsd that throughout the press conference, Harvey owned up to his mistake, and also took to Twitter to say sorry to both pageant contestants. "I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible," he wrote. "Secondly, I'd like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake. I don't want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing."

Judge Order Depositions On Redstone Health

Manuela Herzer, Sumner Redstone
Sumner Redstone has claimed another victory in the ongoing legal battle with his ex-girlfriend Manuela Herzer over the rights to his health care decisions, according to CNN Reliable Sources.

On Monday,  a Los Angeles judge ruled that there was "no urgency" requiring the 92-year-old Viacom chairman to take questions in the case. However, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, who serves as Redstone’s current health care agent, will have to meet with Herzer's lawyers for a series of depositions about the mogul's health.

Herzer filed her lawsuit in November after Redstone revoked her control over his healthcare decisions.

Herzer claims Redstone "lacked the mental capacity" to make such a decision. Redstone's lawyers are now seeking to have the case dismissed. In a statement, they said they were "glad Mr. Redstone will be able to continue to enjoy the holiday season with his family and friends uninterrupted..."

Shari Redstone Refused To Sell Stake In Media Empire

Sumner and Shari Redstone
(Reuters) -- Shari Redstone refused an offer from her media mogul father Sumner to sell her 20 percent stake in the holding company that controls Viacom Inc and CBS Corp for $1 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The offer made in November 2014 would have required Shari to give up her right to become chairman of the two media companies upon the death of her father, now 92, the Journal reported, citing documents and people familiar with the matter.

Philippe Dauman
The tax-free, cash-and-stock offer valued Shari's stake 33 percent more than its present worth, the Journal reported on Sunday.

"It appears that third parties accessed and then disclosed to the Wall Street Journal highly confidential documents," Shari Redstone's spokeswoman Nancy Sterling said in an email, declining to comment further.

The report comes at a time when Sumner's physical and mental health have been the subject of intense debate, partly due to his notable absence from the companies' recent earnings calls.

Earlier this month, Viacom Chief Executive Philippe Dauman addressed these concerns, saying he speaks with Sumner several times a week and that the media mogul was in charge of his own health care.

In recent months Shari, 61, has made efforts to repair her strained relationship with Sumner, visiting him regularly and recently celebrating Hanukkah with him, the Journal report said.

CBS declined to comment on the report, while Viacom did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Viacom has been posting weak revenue in recent quarters, as the MTV and Comedy Central owner struggles to boost ad sales in its U.S. cable TV business.
