San Diego Radio: Report..NFL Chargers Boot Hank Bauer

Hank Bauer
The San Diego Chargers and iHeartMedia, one of the team's broadcast partners, have decided to change their radio broadcasting team.

According to NBC San Diego, Hank Bauer will not return for the 2015 NFL season.

Bauer has been a member of the Chargers organization on and off since 1977. He was a fullback with the team from 1977-82 and coached special teams from 1983-86. Bauer, who in 2009 was named one of the All-Time Greatest Chargers, returned to the Bolts as a radio color analyst in 1998.

In 2014 he was suspended for one pre-season game for making an anti-Semitic remark. Bauer apologized and worked the entire 2014 regular season. It is unknown if that incident contributed to the decision not to bring him back for 2015..

Bauer's replacement has not been decided yet.

WTF Podcast Scores One-On-One With POTUS

In the nearly six years that Marc Maron has hosted his popular podcast, WTF With Marc Maron, the self-deprecating comedian has interviewed hundreds of celebrated stand-ups and entertainers, including Louis C.K., Bob Newhart, Lena Dunham and Amy Poehler.

But on Friday, reports the NY Times, Maron interviewed an altogether different guest who, while highly coveted, is not immediately known for his snappy observations on the absurdities of everyday life: President Obama.

Mr. Obama visited Mr. Maron’s studio in his home garage for about an hour during a visit to Los Angeles, for a podcast posted on Monday. Click Here for audio.

Marson told the NY Time that security was no simple process. According Marson, "Secret Service checked the parameters. Thursday, they put a tent up that ran the length of my driveway, all the way behind my house to the garage. Today they came and put a tent over where the car was going to pull in. There were like 40 Secret Service people here. There were snipers on my neighbor’s roof. A sniper on my garage roof. They had L.A.P.D. all around the perimeter of the house. They have a protocol that occurs. And it was occurring in my house. Now everyone in the world knows where I live, O.K. And apparently the streets were lined with people for the motorcade. I was focusing on just dealing with the situation at hand and trying to have a personal conversation with the president in the midst of this."

Aussie Radio: Report..Kyle, JackieO To Get $12M Offer

Down-Under radio personalities Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson are about to be offered 12 million reasons to return to the radio network that made them stars, according to the Australian Daily Telegraph.

In a stunning about face, Southern Cross Austereo is putting together a $12 million war chest to lure back the Kyle and Jackie O Show, just 18 months after letting the pair slip through their fingers.

The deal, if successful, would see the top-rating show return to the breakfast slot on the newly rebranded Hit 104.1 2Day network — formerly 2Day FM — in 2017.

It follows what has widely been described as one of the worst decisions in broadcasting history, when SCA failed to agree on terms with Sandilands and Henderson in November 2013, prompting the pair to take up a $10 million offer from rivals Australian Radio Network.

Within 12 months the Kyle and Jackie O Show had lifted KIIS FM and ARN to the top of the Sydney radio market while SCA slumped to their worst year on record, wiping more than $100 million from their market capitalisation.

Contacted this week, Sandilands said “it would take more than money” to get him to switch networks a second time in three years, but added: “I like that figure though — $12 million a year is a nice number.”

But it’s not just about the money. Sandilands, who is contracted to ARN to the end of 2016, said: “I just don’t jump through hoops for money any more. But I’m happy for Southern Cross to throw money at us because whatever they throw, ARN will throw more back so it just drives my price up.”

It’s understood counter offers are already being discussed at ARN, which has undergone a management shuffle in recent days. Former boss Ciaran Davis, who orchestrated the poaching of Kyle and Jackie O, was appointed CEO of APN News & Media on Friday.

Davis, along with former APN boss Michael Miller and content boss Duncan Campbell, pulled off the coup of the decade when they lured Sandilands and Henderson to the newly rebranded KIIS FM, a move which took them to the top of the Sydney market within three months and helped lift all of ARN’s stations to record highs.

R.I.P. WHEB Portsmouth NH Radio CoHost Andy Blacksmith

Rock WHEB 100.3 FM's Longtime personality DJ Andy Blacksmith, of “Greg & The Morning Buzz,” lost his five-year battle against heart failure at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston on Saturday.

Fosters.com reports the news was broken to the local community via a Facebook post by the morning talk show’s host Greg Kretschmar on Sunday morning.

“It is with heartbreaking sadness that we announce that we have lost our friend, brother, and co-worker Andy Blacksmith,” Kretschmar wrote. “Although he fought valiantly in the face of long odds, this weekend, his heart grew too weak to fight anymore.”

Andy Blacksmith
The 50-year-old had spent the last five years awaiting a heart transplant and only recently received a surgery to stabilize his own weakened one during the continued wait for a donor. Blacksmith was airlifted to Boston from Portsmouth Regional Hospital on Tuesday following heart complications, according to a statement from station owner iHeartMedia New Hampshire.

The station ran segments titled “Best of The Buzz” throughout the afternoon on Sunday and a show dedicated to Blacksmith’s life will air when “Greg & The Morning Buzz” returns.

“Naturally, we were devastated,” Kretschmar told iHeartMedia. “Even though Andy’s condition was always front and center—and he was the first to joke about it — the reality of him not being here is still hard to believe… Andy was truly a one-of-a-kind personality whose absence will be felt for a long time.”

Prior to joining the “Buzz” family in 2000, Blacksmith had already established an impressive foundation in radio. Beginning behind the scenes, Blacksmith began his radio career after working with legendary music manager Dee Anthony for eight years. Anthony is known for his influence in building the careers of rock greats such as Peter Frampton, Joe Cocker and Sammy Hagar.

Making the transition into the spotlight, Blacksmith “landed nights on WHEB-FM” before working at the legendary “98 Rock” (WIYY) in Baltimore during the 90s and winning a trade association award for “Air Personality of the Year.”

Blacksmith’s radio audience also included Rock 101 in Manchester; Kool 96.3 in Keene; Q106 in Claremont; and 104.9 The Hawk in Meredith/Laconia.

June 22 Radio History

In 1957...Liverpool skiffle group The Quarrymen, later to morph into the Beatles, play their first major gig at a local fete by performing on the back of a coal truck.

Four years later to the day, the Beatles (with Pete Best on drums) would have their first formal recording session, performing "My Bonnie," "When The Saints Go Marching In," "Why Can't You Love Me Again," "Nobody's Child," and "Take Out Some Insurance On Me Baby" while backing singer Tony Sheridan. The sessions, produced by Bert Kaempfert in Hamburg, Germany, also feature "Ain't She Sweet" and the instrumental "Cry For A Shadow," which are both performed by the group alone.

In 1992...legendary WABC 770 AM Program Director and consultant, Rick Sklar, died from complications during routine foot surgery.

Rick Sklar
Sklar grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. He graduated from New York University and volunteered at WNYC radio as a writer. He then worked at WPAC in Patchogue, New York, and in 1954 moved to 1010 WINS where he was assistant program director.

In 1960, Sklar became program director at crosstown competitor WMGM 1050 AM.

He moved to WABC in 1962 and became program director there in 1963. Under his management, WABC became the model for tight-playlist, teenager-targeted Top 40 programming, with a strong signal and famed disc jockeys such as "Cousin Brucie" Bruce Morrow, Dan Ingram, Chuck Leonard, and Ron Lundy.

His relationship with some of the DJs he oversaw was contentious at times. Scott Muni departed from WABC after a number of confrontations with Sklar over playlists including Sklar's refusal to remove Louis Armstrong's version of the #1 smash hit "Hello, Dolly" from the playlist at Muni's request.

In March 1977, Sklar was promoted to vice president of programming for ABC’s radio division. In 1984 he left ABC to start his own consulting firm, Sklar Communications. His autobiography, Rocking America: An Insider's Story: How the All-Hit Radio Stations Took Over America (ISBN 978-0312687977), was published by St. Martin's Press the same year.

In an interview recorded in 1982, when WABC switched from music to talk programming, Sklar said:
Everything has to end, that's life, WABC is … like anything else it's part of life, couldn't go on forever. But … it was a wonderful thing … it was a one-of-a-kind … I don't think there'll ever be another station quite like that. I mean, the scope of the thing was so huge, was so grand; everything that was done was on such a massive scale. We gave out buttons, we gave out 14 million with the WABC call letters and if we spot you we'll give you $25,000. You know, this stuff is … it's just not done today.… We'll miss it.
Radio will go on and on forever. Radio's the most adaptable medium there is, and … the old WABC's place in radio will be remembered by everyone who ever heard it, who ever grew up with it, it'll be part of millions and millions—tens of millions of people's lives, and certainly the lives of everyone in the radio business. Now we just have to go on to new things, and I think we will.
Prior to his death, Sklar had been an avid runner for more than ten years, taking it up in the late 1970s. He ran his first New York City Marathon in 1982, finishing 4 hours, 21 minutes, and 36 seconds; coming in 642nd out of 857 who finished the race in his age group.

He began to have problems with his left foot, which necessitated him quitting the sport by 1990. In June 1992, he entered Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan for a minor operation that would allow him to run again.

Although in good health, he died on the operating table due to a lack of oxygen and other mistakes made by the hospital staff.

Rick Sklar was posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame the following year.
