| WAMU's Geri Mitchell |
For over seven years, Geri Mitchell has been a cornerstone of WAMU 88.5, delivering midday news, talk, and special coverage that helped define the station’s community-focused identity.
This month, she bids farewell to return to her native St. Louis, prioritizing family.
Since joining WAMU in 2017, Mitchell brought her extensive broadcasting experience and a background teaching at Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory High School in St. Louis. Her love for radio sparked early: “I’d set up my radio on the front porch and just listen,” she shared with Morning Edition host Esther Ciammachilli. “Radio was always my thing.”
Mitchell created the Lift Every Voice series for Black History Month, producing on-air tributes to Black artists, athletes, and leaders—both celebrated and unsung. “I wanted it to embrace everyone,” she said. Partnering with The Creative School, she welcomed students to record scripts for the series, inspiring some to pursue journalism and broadcasting in college.
“If I can pass the baton to even one person, there’s hope for the future,” Mitchell noted.WAMU extends heartfelt thanks for her service and wishes her joy in her next chapter.
