Blackout Hits AWS Web Services

A major outage in Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, disrupted services for millions of users worldwide. The incident began around 3:00 AM ET / 12:00 AM PT, primarily affecting the US-EAST-1 region, a critical hub for many internet services. This led to widespread downtime across dozens of high-profile websites, apps, and platforms that rely on AWS infrastructure.

User reports on Downdetector spiked dramatically, reaching peaks of over 50,000 complaints in the US alone.

AWS acknowledged the issue on its status page, attributing it to elevated error rates in certain services. By mid-morning ET, the company deployed a fix and reported "significant signs of recovery," with most services restored. However, some lingering issues persisted, including backlogs of queued requests, affecting recovery times for specific apps.
