Robert Iger Extends With Disney

As many expected, Robert Iger will stay on a while longer as Disney's CEO and Chairman.

The Walt Disney Company board said Thursday that it had extended Iger's contract to July 2, 2019.

USAToday reports the board cited Iger's "outstanding leadership, his record of success in a changing media landscape, and his clear strategic vision for Disney’s future."

Iger, who is 66, had previously set a target departure date of 2018; his previous contract ran into mid-2018. But last April, one of the leading candidates to succeed Iger, Disney COO Thomas Staggs, stepped down.

Iger became Disney's President and Chief Operating Officer in 2000, and added the CEO title in 2005 after Michael Eisner departed. He became chairman in 2012.

During his tenure at Disney, the entertainment giant has expanded its holdings to include Pixar in 2006, the Marvel comics brand in 2009 and Lucasfilm and its Star Wars franchise in 2012.

Last year, Disney became the first studio to take in more than $7 billion in worldwide box office receipts, with hits such as Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Moana and The Jungle Book.

Iger said he'll work with the board to find the next CEO while "continuing to build on our proven strategy for growth." He will also serve as a consultant for three years after his departure.

Terms:
  • Robert Iger would remain employed with company and serve as chairman and chief executive officer from June 30, 2018 to July 2, 2019
  • If Iger remains in employment until July 2, 2019, he will get cash bonus of $5 million in addition to award for fiscal 2019
  • Amendment provides that Iger’s annual compensation for extended employment period to be determined on same basis as fiscal 2016 - SEC filing
  • Says following termination of his employment at expiration date, Iger will serve as consultant for three years following expiration date
  • CEO Iger's annual salary remains unchanged
  • In consideration of consulting services, Iger will receive quarterly fee of $500,000 for each first 8 quarters during consulting period
  • In consideration of consulting services, Iger will receive quarterly fee of $250,000 for each of last four quarters of consulting period

R.I.P.: Former Boston Dummer Sib Hashian

Former Boston drummer Sib Hashian has died after collapsing on stage.

Sib Hashian
Doctors were unable to revive the 67-year-old rocker, real name John Thomas Hashian, after he collapsed on Wednesday, while performing on a ship taking tourists on a Caribbean cruise.

His son Adam said his father suddenly collapsed in the middle of his set on the Legends of Rock cruise.

The cruise set sail from Florida on March 18 and also featured Sib's old Boston bandmate Barry Goudreau, original Beach Boys star David Marks and Foreigner singer Lou Gramm.

The ship will reportedly continue on its voyage as planned, with Sib's fellow musicians paying tribute to him with a gig on Thursday.

Known for his characteristic permed hairstyle, Sib joined Boston in 1975 and performed on their famous self-titled 1976 album, which included the hit More Than a Feeling. He left the group in 1983, but still continued to perform with some of his former bandmates up until his death.

March 24 Radio History

In 1925...radio station KSL of Salt Lake City, Utah, took over the airwaves at AM 1160.  As of 1932 its 50,000 watt signal would become one of the most widely heard across western North America.

In 1932...the first Radio transmission from a moving train occurred as Belle Baker hosted a radio variety program on WABC-AM.

In 1935...In 1935, Major Bowes’ Original “Amateur Hour” went national on the NBC Radio Network, after a year airing locally on WHN New York. In 1952, the show, now hosted by Ted Mack, made it to NBC-TV. It would run on various networks until 1970.

In 1945... Billboard begins publishing its first album chart. The first Number One: A Collection Of Favorites by Nat King Cole.

In 1958...At 6:35 a.m., Elvis Presley reported to Local Draft Board 86 in Memphis, accompanied by his parents, Gladys and Vernon, as well as longtime friend Lamar Fike. Elvis and 12 other recruits were soon bused to Kennedy Veterans Memorial Hospital and inducted into the U.S. Army, where starting pay was $78 a month.

In 1968…Announcer Howard Petrie died at age 61.

Howard Petrie
After he graduated from Somerville High School in 1924, Petrie worked briefly as a bank clerk and a securities salesman. While on a sales call to a radio station, his sonorous bass voice landed him a job. He joined WBZ Radio in Boston in 1929 as a junior announcer. After ten months at the WBZ studios, Petrie left for New York City in June, 1930 where he joined the staff of NBC. Petrie soon became the head announcer for many of the network's shows. His first major network assignment was on Everything Goes, starring Garry Moore. He was the announcer for scores of shows including Abbie's Irish Rose, Big Sister, Camel Caravan, Blondie, The Ray Bolger Show, The Judy Canova Show, The Jimmy Durante Show, and The Garry Moore Show.

In 1977...Jean Shepherd did last show at WOR.

Jean Shepherd
Shepherd began his broadcast radio career on WSAI in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1948. From 1951 to 1953 he had a late-night broadcast on KYW in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after which he returned to Cincinnati for a show on WLW. After a stint on television, he returned to radio. "Shep," as he was known, settled in at WOR 719 AM  New York City on an overnight slot in 1956, where he delighted his fans by telling stories, reading poetry (especially the works of Robert W. Service), and organizing comedic listener stunts.

The most famous of the last involved creating a hoax about a non-existent book, I, Libertine, by the equally non-existent author "Frederick R. Ewing", in 1956. During a discussion on how easy it was to manipulate the best seller lists, which at that time were based not only on sales but demand, Shepherd suggested that his listeners visit bookstores and ask for a copy of I, Libertine which led to booksellers attempting to purchase the book from their distributors. Fans of the show eventually took it further, planting references to the book and author so widely that demand for the book led to it being listed on The New York Times Best Seller list.

Shepherd, Theodore Sturgeon and Betty Ballantine later wrote the actual book, with a cover painted by illustrator Frank Kelly Freas, published by Ballantine Books.

Throughout his radio career, he performed entirely without scripts. His friend and WOR colleague Barry Farber marveled at how he could talk so long with very little written down. Yet during a radio interview, Shepherd once claimed that some shows took several weeks to prepare.

He died October 16, 1999 at the age of 78.

In 2005, Shepherd was posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame, and in November 2013 he was posthumously inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame

In 1980...Harry Harrison started at WCBS-FM in NYC

Ray Goulding, Bob Elliott
In 1990...Ray Goulding, personality at WINS, WHN, WOR died.

Bob Elliott (born 1923) and Ray Goulding (1922–1990) were an American comedy team whose career spanned five decades. Their format was typically to satirize the medium in which they were performing, such as conducting radio or television interviews, with off-the-wall dialogue presented in a generally deadpan style as though it were a serious broadcast.

Elliott and Goulding began as radio announcers (Elliott a disc jockey, and Goulding a news reader) in Boston with their own separate programs on station WHDH-AM, and each would visit with the other while on the air. Their informal banter was so appealing that WHDH would call on them, as a team, to fill in when Red Sox baseball broadcasts were rained out. Elliott and Goulding (not yet known as Bob and Ray) would improvise comedy routines all afternoon, and joke around with studio musicians.

Elliott and Goulding's brand of humor caught on, and WHDH gave them their own weekday show in 1946. Matinee with Bob and Ray was originally a 15-minute show, soon expanding to half an hour. (When explaining why Bob was billed first, Goulding claimed that it was because "Matinee with Bob and Ray" sounded better than "Matinob with Ray and Bob".) Their trademark sign-off was "This is Ray Goulding reminding you to write if you get work"; "Bob Elliott reminding you to hang by your thumbs".

They continued on the air for over four decades on the NBC, CBS, and Mutual networks, and on New York City stations WINS, WOR, and WHN. From 1973 to 1976 they were the afternoon drive hosts on WOR, doing a four-hour show. In their last incarnation, they were heard on National Public Radio, ending in 1987.

Ray Goulding died of kidney failure at his home in Manhasset on New York's Long Island in 1990 at the age of 68.

Bob and Ray were inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995. Bob and Ray were inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in the radio division.

In 2005...Former WCCO Radio show host Jim Rogers has died at age 64. Rogers hosted various programs between 1982 to 1994 including "Jim Rogers at Large."

iHeartRadio Reaches 100M Registered Users Milestone

iHeartRadio, iHeartMedia’s all-in-one digital music, podcasting and live streaming radio service, today announced it has surpassed 100 million registered users and continues to reach user milestones at a rate faster than any other digital music service.  This digital listening is additive to the quarter of a billion listeners iHeartMedia reaches monthly on its 850 broadcast stations across the country.

Darren Davis
With more than a billion downloads, iHeartRadio continues to experience tremendous momentum — reaching 85 percent brand awareness among consumers in less than 5 years.   In addition, this past January iHeartMedia launched another feature for its users — its new on demand subscription services, iHeartRadio Plus and iHeartRadio All Access powered by Napster, which are the first fully differentiated streaming music services to provide listeners with the best of live radio combined with easy-to-use on-demand functionality that makes radio truly interactive. These services connect radio listeners directly to their music collection — unlike others, which can only approach on demand as a music collection offering.

“100 million registered users is an amazing milestone, and we are thrilled to see such great momentum and traction for iHeartRadio,” said Darren Davis, President of iHeartRadio. “We are committed to continuing to provide an exceptional listening experience for our millions of fans and listeners, and with the official launch of our new on demand services, we are able to offer even more iHeartRadio features for our listeners who want to enhance their radio experience.”

In addition to its new on demand features, iHeartRadio continues to expand its podcast offerings. Last year alone, iHeartRadio saw a 30 percent increase in podcast listenership, and the platform currently features more than 5,000 podcasts across 15 different categories – from business and finance to comedy and entertainment.

Tampa Radio: Bubba Gets OK To Refile Nielsen Counter-Claim

Lawyers for Bubba “The Love Sponge” Clem have received the go-ahead to re-file sensational conspiracy allegations against Nielsen in the measurement giant’s ratings tampering suit against the Tampa-based morning man.

According to InsideRadio, a Florida court granted Clem’s motion to lodge a counterclaim alleging Nielsen and Cox Media Group conspired in a “sting operation” to entrap the host into engaging in ratings distortion.

Bubba Clem
Much of Nielsen’s $1 million lawsuit against the controversial personality revolves around a “cooperating panelist” Nielsen identifies as Nicholas Tabachuk. Nielsen claims Clem encouraged Tabachuk to “manipulate” his PPM and those of other members in his household to boost his ratings. But now Clem’s lawyers can make the case that Nielsen and Cox hatched a scheme to entrap Clem, using ratings distortion evidence from the sting to punish Beasley Media Group, owner of Clem’s then-flagship station, with the goal of forcing the broadcaster to end its contract with Clem.

InsideRadio reports the gist of Clem’s case is this: Nielsen selected Tabachuk and three other members of his household as panelists with the express goal of using the “cooperating panelist” to obtain evidence against Clem. Tabachuk had “a well-known relationship with Clem and the ‘Bubba the Love Sponge Show,’” according to the counterclaim. The ratings distortion evidence was obtained by a third party, acting on behalf of Cox and Mike Calta, morning man at Cox talker “102.5 The Bone” WHPT. This third party “developed a relationship of trust with Tabachuk” and convinced him to obtain evidence against Clem and give it to Calta and Cox. This was in the summer of 2015 when Clem’s morning show on Beasley’s WBRN Tampa competed directly with Calta and Cox.

Cox, in turn, allegedly informed Nielsen that Tabachuk told them Clem was involved in ratings distortion activity. After Nielsen sat with Tabachuk at a meeting arranged by agents of Cox, Cox encouraged Tabachuk to continue to play along with Clem “as it would be good for Nielsen to pin this on Clem and bring him down,” Clem’s counterclaim states. Cox is not a party to the case.

And RadioInk is reporting Bubba ref-file includes a new counter-claim aCox demanded Nielsen pressure Beasley to fire in Tampa. And if Nielsen did not implement the “death penalty” sanction, Cox threatened to file a lawsuit against Nielsen, seek an MRC audit and Congressional inquiry into Nielsen’s PPM data collection adequacy.

A trial is expected to be held in June.

NE-PA Radio: Steve Corbett OUT At N/T WILK

Steve Corbett
Steve Corbett, a longtime fixture in Northeastern Pennsylvania media as a newspaper columnist and talk radio host, is no longer employed with Newsradio WILK 980 AM / 103.1 FM.

According to The Citizen's Voice,  a general manager with the station’s parent company disclosed the move announced Wednesday night in an email to employees.

Details about why the station and Corbett, who was on-air during PM Drive, parted ways after a decade were not immediately clear.

“Effective immediately, Steve Corbett will not be returning to WILK. Steve will be shifting his focus to work on some other projects outside our company. We appreciate the work Steve has done on WILK and we wish him well in his future endeavors,” according to the eMail statement.

The staff email was sent out by Ryan Flynn, a general manager for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton division of Entercom Communications, which owns WILK and is one of the nation’s largest radio broadcasting companies.

Last week, the company said Corbett was on a scheduled vacation. He had not returned on air this week.

A phone call placed to Corbett’s cell phone went directly to voicemail Wednesday night.

Corbett worked at The Times Leader newspaper for 17 years, gaining a reputation as a dogged reporter and controversial columnist who won many journalism awards. In 2002, Corbett took a job at the Santa Maria Times in California and notably covered the Michael Jackson child molestation trial.

Corbett moved back to Northeastern Pennsylvania in 2006 and soon started a career as a talk radio host for WILK, coining the catchphrase, “You better listen.”

He often said the focus of his work had shifted to cover public corruption and many of his shows for years were consumed by talking about the scandals that led to the arrests of dozens of elected and appointed officials from across Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Detroit Radio: Monica Conyers OUT At Talk WFDF

Monica Conyers
Radio Talk Host Monica Conyers said Wednesday she wasn’t fired from Talk WFDF 910 AM, countering that she wanted to give up the unpaid gig.

The radio station doesn’t pay its hosts and expects them to draw advertising. But when Conyers decided she wanted to leave, it sparked a “falling out” with station leadership, said Daniel Findling, a Royal Oak-based attorney who represented Conyers in a prior divorce case.

The explanation came a few hours after 910 AM Superstation owner Kevin Adell released a memo claiming he had fired Conyers.

“Effective immediately, Monica Conyers will no longer represent The Word Network in any capacity. Here services as a vendor have been terminated for violation of CORPORATE POLICY,” Adell, who also owns WADL-TV, told employees in a Wednesday memo.

Adell didn’t specify what the violation was, and radio station spokesman Mort Meisner declined comment, adding that “The memo have to speak for itself.”

Conyers had a Sunday 1-2 p.m. show that started in September.

Conyers was elected to the Detroit City Council in 2005 and pleaded guilty to city hall corruption charges in 2010, which ended with a 37-month federal prison sentence for accepting financial bribes for a favorable vote on a $1 billion sludge-hauling deal. She was released from probation eight months early in August 2014.

The radio station owner has had trouble with other radio hosts. In October, former Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee quit 15 minutes into his midday show on 910AM superstation. Adell told The Detroit News Godbee left because he rejected Godbee’s request for a show on The Word Network, a religious broadcasting station he owns.
