Musicians To Drum Up Support To End Hunger

  • Come Together, Right Now: Ringo Starr, Max Weinberg, Matt Cameron, Jim Keltner, Steve Gadd, Cindy Blackman Santana and Nandi Bushell Team Up for WhyHunger Campaign
  • WhyHunger's Drum Together features over 100 of the world's greatest drummers for a newly released version of The Beatles' iconic song "Come Together" to end hunger
Harnessing the power of music to spark change, some of the world's best celebrity drummers have joined forces for the first time ever, with a mission to build a just hunger-free world. WhyHunger's Drum Together campaign released today features over 100 legendary artists including Ringo Starr, Brian Frasier-Moore, Cindy Blackman Santana, Jim Keltner, Jonathan Moffett, Matt Cameron, Max Weinberg, Steve Gadd, and 11-year-old drumming sensation Nandi Bushell for an epic musical tribute to The Beatles' GRAMMY Award-winning song "Come Together," in celebration of the song's anniversary. Funds raised will support WhyHunger's mission to end global hunger by tackling its root causes and investing in grassroots solutions to advance the human right to nutritious food for all.

"We all can agree that no kid should be hungry, and everyone should have access to nutritious food. This is a great cause that I've supported in the past and a great track - one of my favorite Beatles songs. So when Jim Keltner asked me to join all these other drummers I was happy to. Peace and love," said Ringo.

Conceptualized and produced by Tony Award-winner Brian Resnick and Drumming's Global Ambassador Dom Famularo, Drum Together features the greatest collection of drummers and percussionists to ever perform on one song. The talented line-up includes: Alan White, Andrew Marshall, Chad Smith, Cherisse Osei, Dave Weckl, Jon Fishman, Lil' John Roberts, Kenny Aronoff, Liberty DeVitto, Pedrito Martinez, Simon Kirke, Stewart Copeland, Valerie Naranjo, Vinnie Colaiuta and more.

"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to help unite the world through music and to help lift up such an important cause alongside my beloved drumming community. Hunger affects far too many across the globe, and I urge everyone to join forces with us to support WhyHunger's work to end hunger," said Jim Keltner.

"In a society too often focused on differences, the idea for Drum Together was simple: to bring top drummers from around the world together for a common cause—ensuring everyone's human right to food," said Brian Resnick. "Like all efforts to make a positive impact, there is power in numbers. We are blown away by the magnitude of world-class musicians who jumped at the opportunity to contribute."

"When it comes to impactful compositions, 'Come Together' is at the top of the list. It was the perfect song to galvanize this community for such a critical cause," added Dom Famularo. "Our hope is that WhyHunger's Drum Together becomes the soundtrack for justice as we strive with one beat and one mission to end hunger."

With 90 cents of every dollar raised going directly to programmatic work, funds from the campaign will fuel transformative community-led solutions across the U.S. and around the globe that advance the human right to nutritious food for all. WhyHunger's Drum Together is made possible with the generous support from SONY and Apple Corps, and with sponsorship from Davis Polk and Cindy and Tom Secunda. Drum Together was arranged and co-produced by Randy Waldman; directed, edited and produced by Dakota Lupo and audio engineered and co-produced by Russ Miller.

Wake-Up Call: COVID Surge Is Slowing

The United States reached a heartbreaking milestone of 700,000 deaths due to COVID-19 on Friday. But there are signs that the surge in cases due to the delta variant is beginning to slow. According to NPR, health experts believe the pandemic has peaked even in the Deep South, where it was raging only weeks ago.

The worst-hit state right now is Alaska. Intensive care units there are packed and supplies are running low, The New York Times reports.

➤STUDY: WOMEN SPENT MORE TIME ON THE PHONE AND FOLLOWED RULES MORE CLOSELY IN COVID LOCKDOWN, BUT MEN BOUNCED BACK BETTER AFTERWARDS: Men and women handled the COVID-19 lockdowns differently. Researchers in Vienna looked at mobile phone data from 1.2 milllion Austrians from between February and June 2020. They found in general, people made fewer, but longer phone calls right after lockdown started, and phone calls involving women lasted significantly longer. After the first lockdown was announced in Austria, women calling other women had calls 1.5 times longer than before the pandemic began, and phone calls from men to women lasted nearly twice as long. The researchers also found that pre-existing social differences between men and women were amplified during the lockdown, with women going out far less than men. The data also showed that men visited a large recreational area and shopping mall during lockdown more often than women did. In addition, once lockdown restrictions were lifted, men returned to their pre-pandemic lives and behavior patterns more quickly than women did. Study co-author Stefan Thurner adds, “We are providing concrete information for policymakers which can either be used for planning in an acute crisis, or flow into a more targeted health planning, or could even lead to considerations on how to achieve a more gender-equitable society.

➤OIL SPILL ALONG CALIFORNIA COAST: Dead birds and fish are washing ashore along the Southern California coast after a major oil spill. The leak started about five miles off Huntington Beach. The spill's apparent cause was a broken pipe at an offshore oil platform. The final day of the Pacific Airshow had to be canceled and beaches along a nearly-five-mile stretch have been closed.

➤BODY BELIEVED TO BE MISSING COLLEGE STUDENT FOUND: A body found in Orlando on Saturday is believed to be that of missing 19-year-old college student Miya Marcano. She had been missing since September 24th. The body was found in a wooded area about 20 miles from her home. A maintenance worker at her apartment complex who was a prime suspect in her disappearance was found dead last week in an apparent suicide.

➤ALADDIN GOES DARK: Broadway’s Aladdin has to go dark to keep COVID-19 under control. Friday’s performance was canceled and all of the shows until October 12th have been canceled due to breakthrough cases being reported within the show’s cast and crew. The show reopened Tuesday after 18 months of darkness. "This 12-day pause allows the Aladdin company ample time to ensure that people with breakthroughs recover, and any other potential breakthroughs are identified before the Aladdin company gathers again," Dr. Blythe Adamson, the epidemiologist working with Disney Theatrical Productions, said in a statement.

OOPSY! BILLIONAIRES' OFFSHORE STASHES REVEALED: The king of Jordan, whose poor nation is propped up with foreign aid, owns a 26-room Malibu mansion overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's just part of King Abdullah's global property portfolio, said to be worth about $100 million.

This is just one revelation from the Pandora Papers, a vast pile of information on the secret offshore accounts of the rich and powerful that has been acquired by The Guardian newspaper and other publishers around the world. More details are expected this week.

➤NOBODY WINS: The Powerball jackpot has swollen to $670 million for today's drawing after no one held the winning numbers in Saturday's drawing. A record 40 Powerball drawings have taken place without a grand prize winner, although one player scored a measly one million bucks in Saturday's drawing.

➤WHAT OUR WANDERING THOUGHTS CAN TEACH US ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH:  If you pay attention to where your mind wanders it can tell you something about your mental health. University of Arizona researchers found ruminative individuals had negative thoughts that lasted longer than positive thoughts, and those negative thoughts became progressively narrower in topic over time. Other people thought about positive things, and positive topics or goals they wanted to reach in their downtime. Study co-author Jessica Andrews-Hanna says, “Eventually, we hope to connect the psychological characteristics of idle thought to the biological patterns of activity and connectivity changing across time to provide a fuller picture of consciousness and mental health.”

NewsNation's Dan Abrams Highlights Difference In Mandate Coverage

Mediaite founder Dan Abrams contrasted CNN and Fox News’ coverage of Covid vaccine mandates on Friday, remarking, “And we wonder why we’re so divided as a nation.”

Abrams’ comments came during Friday night’s “Mediaite Moments” segment of Dan Abrams Live, which launched Monday on NewsNation.

“The vaccine mandates remain a divisive issue in the country but you would hope the impact of the mandates might be a fairly straightforward issue, where a news network would be able to provide us with the facts on how and whether they’re working,” Abrams said. “Sadly, it apparently depends on what network you’re watching.”

Abrams then flipped between CNN and Fox News — who at “precisely 7:21” Thursday night were both discussing the merits of vaccine mandates.

➤The segment starts at the 38:45 time mark:

Closing out the segment, Abrams noted: “And we wonder why we’re so divided as a nation. Speaking of health, this isn’t healthy for anyone.”

YouTubeTV, NBC Universal Reach Carriage Deal

Google’s YouTube TV and NBCUniversal announced Saturday that they had finalized a new carriage agreement that will keep 14 NBCUniversal television channels — including NBC, MSNBC, Bravo, E! and Telemundo — available to YouTube TV subscribers, reports The L-A Times.

We’re thrilled to share that we’ve reached a deal with NBCUniversal to continue carrying the full NBCUniversal portfolio of channels, including their Regional Sports Networks and your local NBC station. That means you won’t lose access to any of their channels, and YouTube TV will continue to offer 85+ networks for $64.99* per month.

We appreciate NBCUniversal’s willingness to work toward an agreement, and we also appreciate your patience while we negotiated with them on your behalf. Thanks again for being a YouTube TV member.

Sincerely,
The YouTube TV team

The deal averts a blackout of such shows as “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” on Bravo, “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC and NBC’s “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,” “NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt” and “Sunday Night Football.”

The two sides had been facing a Thursday night deadline to hammer out a new distribution pact, and earlier in the week, the two companies alerted consumers about a possible blackout. Amid the public messaging campaign, there was a breakthrough in the talks, and NBCUniversal said Thursday night that it had granted a short-term extension in the original deadline.

Earlier in the week it appeared that YouTube TV might lose the legal rights to carry the channels owned by NBCUniversal, including regional sports channels and NBC network-affiliated stations. Google, which owns YouTube TV, had been balking at NBCUniversal’s demands for higher fees.

The two sides did not disclose terms of the new carriage deal Saturday.

The skirmish between the two media giants is the latest flare-up in the television industry’s long-running carriage fee wars.

An outage of NBCUniversal channels on YouTube TV would have been a major disruption for subscribers to the popular 4-year-old linear channel service, which has about 4 million subscribers, according to analysts’ estimates.

Amid a migration of traditional subscribers, television channel owners, including NBCUniversal, have been raising the fees they charge distributors in an effort to keep their TV channels highly profitable. These companies argue that programming costs, particularly for sports, have skyrocketed — and they need to increase revenue to cover rising expenses.

But TV distributors in recent years have bristled at the constant fee increases, arguing that TV programmers are making a difficult situation even worse by contributing to the escalating subscription fees that irritate consumers. The distributors have claimed the programmers are inadvertently helping to chase away valuable customers.

“The prevalence of cord-cutting in the U.S. and the persistent decline in cable network viewership complicate carriage agreements,” analysts with the research firm S&P Global Market Intelligence wrote in a September report. “Traditional multichannel operators face weakening demand due to the rise of over-the-top platforms, but cable programmers continue to ask for affiliate rate hikes to keep their linear businesses afloat.”

Study: Streaming Services Are A Better Value than Cable

The old way of watching TV is out, and the new way is in. The new way being streaming services of course. Streaming was first introduced years ago, and there’s a reason it’s stuck around and become the primary way of consuming entertainment. Cord Cutter News reports a new study by Criteo reveals that half of Americans say they enjoy video streaming because it allows them to watch anytime, anywhere. This flexibility means you don’t have to plan your life around a TV schedule in order to see your favorite shows.

Another reason viewers prefer streaming over traditional TV is content quality. In fact, 3 out of 5 agree that the content on video streaming services is more entertaining and gets them a better value for their money than cable or satellite TV. That, coupled with the 69% who agree video streaming services offer better value for their money than cable TV, and it’s a clear choice.

Money has been and forever will be a driving factor in consumer choices, and streaming is no exception with 61% of Americans saying subscription cost is their top consideration for using a video streaming service, and 3 in 5 are happy to watch video streaming services with a fully or partially ad-funded subscription.

The majority of Americans keep their streaming bill under $50 a month, with 55% reporting it’s between $1-$50, and 10% using free services.

Dr. Laura Lists Santa Barbara Compound For $19.5M

Dr. Laura is offering something other than relationship advice — a $19.5 million Santa Barbara compound, The NY Post reports.

It’s where the controversial radio personality raised her family, recorded her show and even hosted her son’s wedding, she told The Post of her 16 years there.

“You walk into a house and it’s like a warm sweater or not. This house is like a warm, toasty sweater,” Dr. Laura Schlessinger told The Post. “It has a good feeling because there was so much happiness here.”

The 74-year-old SiriusXM radio host plans to downsize because her late husband Lewis Bishop died in 2015 and her son Deryk Schlessinger, 35, is grown, she said.

“It’s amazing to come full circle in this house — to have a baby, and now he’s married… It was touching to be the mother of the groom,” she said.

“The first time I saw the house, I went to the back and said ‘Holy cow’ — actually, I said a naughtier word,” she told The Post.

She’ll miss the ocean view but hopes her new place will have a view too — or at least a koi pond or a fish tank, she said.

R.I.P.: Matt Loede, Longtime Cleveland Sports Media Figure

Matt Loede
Matt Loede, a longtime fixture in the Cleveland sports media scene as both a writer and a broadcaster, passed away this past Wednesday after a long battle with cancer.

He was 46 years old, reports WKYC3.

In May of 2019, Loede was diagnosed with stage four stomach, kidney and pancreatic cancer. After a lengthy hospital stay, four rounds of chemotherapy, and a stem cell transplant, his cancer was in remission. In August of 2020, he announced that the cancer had returned to the point where his lymphoma had spread.

Through it all, he continued to work.

Loede's journalism career of more than 25 years included everything from radio work at WEOL-AM 930 in Elyria, to instructing at the Ohio Media School, to reporting at local sporting events for outlets such as the Associated Press Broadcasting, NBC Sports Radio, Fox Sports Radio, Sporting News Radio, and more.

He also wrote three books during his career. Game of My Life: Cleveland Browns: Memorable Stories of Browns Football was published in 2016. He also wrote two books about his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers, 2013's 100 Things Steelers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die and Game of My Life Pittsburgh Steelers: Memorable Stories of Steelers Football, which was published in 2019.

More recently, Loede worked as a sportswriter for Outkick.

October 4 Radio History

➦In 1922...Baseball's World Series first aired on radio over WJZ NYC and WGY Albany NY.  the announcers were Grantland Rice and W. O. McGeehan.

➦In 1925...The Atwater Kent Radio Hour debuted on WEAF NYC and carried by 11 other stations.  It was a top-rated radio concert music program heard on NBC and CBS from October 4, 1925, to December 17, 1934, with stars of the Metropolitan Opera often making appearances. Classical music was performed by a large symphony orchestra.

➦In 1939...a barber from Canonsburg (near Pittsburgh) recorded 'That Old Gang of Mine' with the Ted Weems Orchestra. That singer was the feature of the Weems band for many years before going solo as a radio, TV and stage star. We know him as The Incomparable Mr. C, Perry Como.

His string of hits for RCA Victor spans four decades. He was an NBC mainstay (radio & TV) for almost as long.  According to Billboard, Como's last Top10 hit was "It's Impossible" in 1970.

➦In 1948..."The Railroad Hour," starring Gordon MacRae in "The World's Greatest Musical Comedies," began a one-year run on ABC Radio. The series moved to NBC in 1949 and continued until June 1954. Marvin Miller was the announcer.

➦In 1957...The comic strip and radio show “Blondie" made the transition to TV, starring Pamela Britton in the title role, and Arthur Lake as Dagwood.

➦In 1986...CBS newsman Dan Rather was mugged in New York City as he was walking along Park Avenue in Manhattan to his apartment. He was attacked and punched from behind by a man who demanded to know, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" while a second assailant also chased and beat him. As the assailant pummeled and kicked Rather, he kept repeating the question over and over again.

Ten years later, Rather's primary attacker was identified as William Tager, who shot and killed an NBC technician outside the "Today" show studios in 1994.

➦In 2014...Paul Revere, the organist and since 1958 leader of the rock band “Paul Revere & the Raiders,” died from cancer at age 76. With Mark Lindsay as lead vocalist they scored the hits “Kicks” (1966), “Hungry” (1966), “Him Or Me – What’s It Gonna Be?” (1967) and the Platinum-certified No. 1 single “Indian Reservation” (1971).
