Charleston Radio: Z93.3 FM Host Apparent Murder Victim

The Charleston radio and music community are reeling after a young army veteran was shot and killed in Beaufort County over the weekend. 28-year-old Nathaniel Scott was known as DJ Tough Love, a regular on the WWWZ Z 93.3 FM airwaves.

Friends said Scott had just returned from his fifth duty in Afghanistan Wednesday to surprise his family for Thanksgiving.

Radio personalities are used to reporting the news, but not when it’s one of their own. DJ Cass and Kathy Brown, program director for WWWZ and WMGL, took to the airwaves Monday to address the loss.

“I say it all the time, a lot of time when we deal with these situations, it doesn’t have the same affect unfortunately until it hits home. This time around it hit home to the family of the Z,” said DJ Cass.

ABC News4 reports Brown said she was expecting him to come to the studio Monday to discuss his future with the station.

“He just got home Wednesday, he hit me and was like ‘hey I’m home!’ I was like ‘hey, congratulations, you made it home safe and sound, that’s a blessing’,” she said.

DJ Cass said he brought Tough Love on board about two years ago and was impressed by his passion and drive.

“The thing that you can’t teach someone is passion and if you have that, that’s probably 80-percent of this job is just having the passion and the drive to do it and he had that,” Brown said. “He would have, he would have been a great talent, he really, really would have.”
