NYC Radio: Patty Steele Returns, Talks With Dr. Oz

Scott Shannon in the Morning on WCBS 101.1 FM welcomed back the heart of the crew this week when Patty Steele returned to the team.

Patty was on medical leave for several weeks after discovering a lump on her breast which turned out to be cancerous. Patty underwent surgery to remove the malignant tissue and is 100% cancer-free.

Patty’s return comes at the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the show had Dr. Oz on to discuss the importance of checking and early detection.

“A lot of women don’t realize this, but young women generally find the lump themselves, it’s not with lomography,” says Dr. Oz. “They actually examine themselves and feel something that’s not normal.”

This was exactly how Patty discovered the lump she had in her breast weeks ago.

“I do it pretty regularly, but also because there’s no family history for me of any kind of cancer,” says Patty. “It wasn’t something that was really on my radar and I felt it and didn’t think about it until I happened to go into my regular doctor who said, ‘Let’s do some testing here.’ And that’s how we found it.”

Patty, like many women, generally don’t think about such things, especially if there is no history of cancer in the family.

“You think it’s not going to be you because there’s no family history,” adds Patty. “But what you find out… 90% of cases are not genetically predisposed.”
