Massive Layoffs Expected At Amazon

Amazon.com Inc. is preparing to implement significant layoffs, targeting as many as 30,000 corporate positions starting on Tuesday. This move is part of a broader cost-reduction strategy to address overhiring that occurred during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand for e-commerce and cloud services surged.

The cuts are expected to affect various divisions, including human resources (People Experience and Technology), devices and services, and operations. Managers of impacted teams received training on Monday, October 27, to handle notifications, which will begin via email the following morning.

Total Employees Affected:
Up to 30,000 roles, representing nearly 10% of Amazon's approximately 350,000 corporate staff. This is a small fraction (about 2%) of the company's overall workforce of 1.55 million employees.

Historical Context: If executed, this would mark Amazon's largest single round of job cuts since late 2022, when around 27,000 positions were eliminated across multiple waves of layoffs.

Broader Implications: The layoffs come amid ongoing efforts to streamline operations post-pandemic, with Amazon focusing on efficiency in its retail, AWS (Amazon Web Services), and other segments.

The company is set to report its third-quarter earnings on Thursday, October 30, 2025, which may provide more details on financial performance driving these decisions.
