Alleged Kirk Killer Gets OK To Wear Civilian Clothes At Trial

Robinson and Kirk

A judge ruled on Monday that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, may wear civilian clothing during his trial.

District Court Judge Tony F. Grant Jr. granted this request to uphold the presumption of innocence, despite the serious nature of the charges, which carry potential penalties of life imprisonment or death.

Robinson, who has no prior criminal history or record of misconduct in custody, will still be required to wear handcuffs in the courtroom, Judge Grant decided.

Additionally, cameras are prohibited from showing Robinson entering, exiting, or standing in the courtroom, and his restraints cannot be photographed or recorded.

The ruling came during a hearing where Robinson, though not visible on camera, confirmed he could hear the proceedings when addressed by the judge.

A planned in-person hearing on Thursday in a Provo courthouse, where Robinson was permitted to avoid showing his face, has been canceled.
