For the 2nd week in a row, “World News Tonight” posted gains on the year-earlier week (7.251 million, 1.812 million and 1.245 million, respectively, on w/o 10/7/13) in Total Viewers (+13%), Adults 25-54 (+14%) and Adults 18-49 (+10%). “World News Tonight” grew the most in each demo and stood as the only evening newscast to build year to year in all three measures as “CBS Evening News” (-2%/+1%/+8%) and “NBC Nightly News” (+5%/-11%/-5%) were both mixed.
“World News Tonight” slashed its year-to-year margins with “NBC Nightly News” by more than half in Total Viewers (-62% - 348,000 vs. 927,000) and Adults 18-49 (-60% - 134,000 vs. 336,000).
“World News Tonight” was up over the previous week (w/o 9/29/14) in both Total Viewers (8.213 million vs. 8.113 million) and Adults 25-54 (2.072 million vs. 2.065 million) to hit season highs in both measures.
Season to date, “World News Tonight” stands as the No. 1 evening newscast in Adults 25-54, leading “NBC Nightly News” by 89,000 news demo viewers. This marks the first time in 7 years that “World News Tonight” ranks as the top evening newscast in Adults 25-54 during the season – since the 2007-08 season. “World News Tonight” slashed its Total Viewer season gap with “NBC Nightly News” by more than half (-62% - 322,000 vs. 841,000).
Through the first three weeks of the season, “World News Tonight” is improving versus the first three weeks of last season in Total Viewers (+9%) and Adults 25-54 (+9%). Delivering increases for the 2nd season in a row, “World News Tonight” is posting its best overall viewer start to a season in 9 years and strongest in the key adult news demo in 5 years – since the 2005-06 and the 2009-10 seasons, respectively.
For the week, “World News Tonight” led the “CBS Evening News” by 1.993 million Total Viewers, by 602,000 Adults 25-54 and by 330,000 Adults 18-49.
