Diller Trying New Tactic To Revive Aereo

There’s a rumbling from the corporate graveyard — Barry Diller’s Aereo is trying to come back from the dead, reports The NY Post.

After being deep-sixed by the Supreme Court in June for violating broadcast TV stations’ copyrights, Aereo, which used tens of thousands of dime-sized antennas to redistribute local stations without paying for the signal, is looking to come back to life, CEO Chet Kanojia wrote in a blog post on Monday.

This time Aereo wants to be considered part of the cable TV universe.

Kanojia met on Oct. 8 with Federal Communications Commission boss Tom Wheeler to discuss a possible reclassification, the CEO wrote in the post.

Should the FCC side with Aereo, it would allow the nimble startup, backed by Diller and Highland Capital, to negotiate to carry local TV stations.

Part of Aereo’s pitch to the FCC also involves its desire to carry only local stations and not be burdened by the huge packages that traditional operators take as part of bundled deals with programmers.
