NYC Radio: Dr. Joy Browne, David Patterson Out At WOR

UPDATE 12/20/2012:  This morning Clear Channel has not yet converted the WOR website to its news/talk template.  Changes are being made, especially to the line-up section.

Original Posting...

And so it begins.  Dr. Joy Browne, David Patterson and others are out at WOR 710 AM, NYC.

The move was not entirely unexpected given the change of ownership of the station from Buckley Broadcasting to Clear Channel Media and Entertainment.

Sixty-eight-year-old Dr. Joy Browne is a nationally acclaimed, syndicated radio host and licensed clinical psychologist. Her radio program, the longest running of its kind, has been on the WOR Radio Network for nearly 15 years.

Cumulus' Mike Huckabee syndicated show has been dropped.  Other syndicated programming gone from WOR: Salem's Mike Gallagher and TRN's Jerry Doyle.

It’s also believed that the morning show board-op for John Gambling has been terminated, along with some show producers at the station.

Buckley Broadcasting CEO Joe Bilotta released the following statement:
"The acquisition of WOR has officially closed. We thank our employees for their service over the years and wish them all the best in the future. We are providing our workers with a generous severance package, and Clear Channel will absorb a number of the station staff."
The NYTimes is reporting Bilotta said Clear Channel had asked him to make the staff changes before the deal closed. Clear Channel increased by one-third the severance package for departing employees..

It’s been widely believed CC will move Premiere Networks properties such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity over to WOR from WABC 770 AM.  It’s also anticipated that Glenn Beck will take the time slot now occupied by Salem’s Mike Gallagher.

Mike Huckabee, heard on WOR until Thursday, is expected to find a new home on WABC.  The show is part of the Cumulus Media Network lineup.

Stay Tuned.

    1. I'm with you. My main reason for listening to WOR was Dr. Joy Browne. I was shocked to hear that her show had been cancelled. I've been listening to her for years and love the show. Whenever she finds a new station, I'm there!

  8. Listening to Browne was the highlight of my day. I am so very unhappy at the loss of her wonderful insights into human relationships. Can't think of anything that can replace her. I'll keep looking to see if she shows up anywhere else.

  11. I have regarded Dr. Joy Browne as one of the most important programs on either radio or TV. Her advice has had a positive impact on countless people and is a welcome break from the discussion of the same thing 100 times a day. Maybe we can find her on the internet. I understand finances but sometimes a "community service" trumps other things. Whatever the reason she has been dropped I think it is important to remember that people who's lives are not running well are not as open to hearing whatever the new owners are trying to promote with their new lineup.

I will also add that dropping former Gov. Patterson is disappointing. He is among the very few who seem to be able to see more than one side of an issue and is not an attack animal. We have too many of those and frankly I am sick of them. Hope I won't be turning off WOR. We will see.

  13. I'm following the same path of the others who have commented on Dr. Joy Browne's departure from WOR. I guess Clear Channel has no interest in diversity of thought, or even intelligent conversation. Why would someone want to listen to a Hannity or Limbaugh for hours on end? At some point, we as a country, will have to evaluate why we promote (and actually consume) narrow-minded hate and vitriol. In the meantime, I'm searching for Dr. Joy Browne, either online - - or on another station.

  15. Used to listen to Joy Browne but I find myself turning her off more and more. There are too many "I's" in her broadcast. I usually like her conversations with her callers, but it seems that most of her program consists of her rambling on about something. Perhaps there are not enough callers to fill the air time and she needs to resort to telling us about herself. If that's the case, it's time to let her go.

    1. I totally agree. ....she goes on and on about herself. She is annoying....I liked the old Joy Browne where she helped people. I think she thinks she is 19 yrs old. ...we know she is 69 yrs old....brown shoe polish in brown gravy...that is what she said on the air to make her gravy brown...and she wasn't kidding.

  18. Is Dr. Joy returning to the air or is she not? I can imagine if she is in actual negotiations she cannot speak, but surely she could have the courtesy of updating her website to let her listeners know more about what is going on, if not the actual details.

  19. A radio syndication company known as Radio America has announced the addition of The Dr. Joy Browne Radio Program to its daily lineup. It is not known if any NYC radio station will pick-up the show. We'll keep an eye on developments.

  20. Am I correct in assuming that Dr. Joy did not negotiate having podcasts as part of her contract with Radio America? She has just abandoned that following?

  21. Wow sorry to see some great people leave WOR. Dr Joy was a delight will be missed. I agree who wants to keep listening to the same old political views of the same OLD guys. As the old saying goes VARIETY is the spice of life. I will find her on Radio America, and will help pass the word. If Joan goes that will really shake up WOR and will probably lose a lot of listners, by their past mistakes.

  22. New company makes big mistakes ! Rita Cosby is boring. She repeats herself She is . opinionated to a high degree. She interrupts the callers who are the basis of her 2 hours of radio time ! Her voice is horrid !

  27. WOR has been getting worse and worse. Steve Malzberg was way better than Sean Hannity. Dropping J Browne was the last straw. My relationship with WOR is over. Jane
