According to the New York Post, the atmosphere at CNN is far from cheerful in the initial weeks of the new administration. Insiders express frustration, claiming that executives are paying individuals to cater to Trump's preferences, with fears that the network, which prides itself as "the most trusted name in news," is shifting rightward to attract more viewers.
Under the leadership of new CEO Mark Thompson, who has been criticized for allegedly pandering to the White House, morale has reportedly plummeted. Some employees are said to feel ashamed to be associated with the network.
The situation escalated when Jim Acosta, known for his critical stance against Trump, announced his departure from CNN after being reassigned to a night shift. A source told Page Six, "Longtime CNN employees, who are actual journalists, are embarrassed."
Conservative commentator Scott Jennings, a frequent guest on Abby Phillip's 10 p.m. show "CNN NewsNight," has reportedly caused friction among staff with his pro-Trump rhetoric. An insider commented, "They pay him to kiss Donald Trump's ass... Some of the editorial people don't even want their names associated with it, but [CNN brass] think it’s good television and encourage it. It's embarrassing."In response to Acosta's exit, CNN has appointed veterans Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown to take over the 10 a.m. "CNN Newsroom" slot. Acosta was initially slated for the unpopular overnight shift but chose to leave instead.
Trump took to social media to comment on Acosta's demotion, saying, "Jim Acosta, one of the worst and most dishonest reporters in journalistic history, a major sleazebag, has been relegated by CNN Fake News to the Midnight hour, 'Death Valley,' because of extraordinarily BAD RATINGS (and no talent!)." He further added, "Word is that he wants to QUIT, and that would be even better. Jim is a major loser who will fail no matter where he ends up. Good luck Jim!"
Acosta joins a list of notable departures from CNN, including Chris Cuomo, Don Lemon, Alisyn Camerota, and Poppy Harlow, as the network grapples with its identity. An insider remarked, "It’s clear they’re acquiescing to Trump, especially with what they did to Acosta. Morale is low!"
