The first week of Donald Trump's second presidency saw a significant boost in MSNBC's viewership. Primetime viewership reached an average of 1.3 million, while total day viewership averaged 591,000, marking the highest numbers since the presidential election week in November 2024.
"The Rachel Maddow Show," expanding to five days a week for the first 100 days of the new administration, averaged 1.7 million viewers, significantly outperforming CNN's "The Source with Kaitlan Collins," which averaged 745,000 viewers.

During key events like the inauguration, confirmation hearings, and Trump's early executive orders, MSNBC outdid CNN in both total viewers for the cabinet confirmation hearings (620,000 vs. 556,000) and on inauguration night, where MSNBC's primetime coverage surpassed CNN's for the first time ever.
Additionally, MSNBC's primetime lineup attracted nearly twice as many independents and Republicans as CNN's, according to Nielsen/MRI fusion data. This uptick in viewership represents a recovery for MSNBC, which had previously seen its primetime audience halve after Trump's election victory, with a 55% drop in viewership compared to a 46.7% drop for CNN and a 10.7% increase for Fox News during the same period.
The network's internal projections had anticipated a viewership rebound post-inauguration, considering the typically lower holiday viewership.
