Coalition Wants More Freedom To Fly Drones
The News Media Coalition, a group of 22 media organizations such as NBCUniversal, The Associated Press, New York Times and Reuters, told the FAA that the proposed rules for the commercial use of drones don’t go far enough, according to katyonthehill.com.
In comments Friday with the FAA and published Tuesday, the coalition wrote that the FAA’s proposed rules are overbroad and should be relaxed to “further the public’s First Amendment interest in the timely receipt of information on matters of public concern, and the First Amendment rights of journalists to gather news.”
Camera equipped drones have shot some spectacular visuals for “Skyfall” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction”. But news organizations have been shut out of legally using the new technology due to the Federal Aviation Administration’s current, restrictive rules on the commercial use of drones in US airspace.
The comments are in response to a set of new rules the FAA proposed in February which are designed to open the skies to the commercial use of drones.
