R.I.P. Longtime WGY Albany Morning Host Don Weeks

Don Weeks
WGY 810 AM / 103.1 FM talk show host Don Weeks has died, the radio station announced Wednesday morning.

He was 76-years-of-age.

The station called Weeks "legendary" in its announcement -- and it might be difficult to argue that he wasn't, according to the Albany Times-Union.

Weeks joined WGY in December 1980 and retired from his morning show, a ratings juggernaut for years, in 2010.

He was affectionately known as "Uncle Don" throughout his tenure, teaming with newsman Chuck Custer (and current WGY Morning cohost) for a show that endured for decades.

The longtime Capital Region radio and television personality retired in December 2010, saying there are hills he wanted to climb, oceans he wanted to sail and canvasses he wanted to paint.

"They say there are no happy endings in radio," Weeks said on WGY when he announced his retirement. WGY was his broadcast home for nearly 30 years. "Yes, there are. This is a very happy ending for me."

"He's the best radio talent we've ever had in this market," Joe Condon, himself a well-known Capital Region radio host, said at the time of the Weeks' retirement.

Weeks started on radio here in 1956, when he was a teenager.
