KABC News Team l to r Bill Thomas, John Wolf, Dave Alpert, Doug McIntrye (Host of McIntyre in the Morning) Jeff Whittle (seated), Sports Anchor winner Randy Wang, Sandy Wells (seated) News Director Nathan Baker, Operations Director Drew Hayes.

Cumulus Media announces that its Los Angeles, CA, News/Talk station 790 KABC captured three Golden Mike Awards at the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California’s 67th Annual Golden Mike Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at the Universal Hilton in Universal City, CA. The Golden Mike Awards are Southern California's most prestigious and most coveted broadcast journalism prize.

The 790 KABC News Team won a Golden Mike in the “Best Newscast Writing” category for news writing for “The 8 AM News on KABC”.  Journalist Jim Roope won a Golden Mike for his excellence in reporting in the “Best News Reporting by a Radio Network or Content Syndicator” category. Roope is a reporter for Westwood One who provides news reports numerous times a day for KABC. Sportscaster Randy Wang was honored with a Golden Mike for “Best Sports Segment” for his excellence in sportscasting on KABC’s “McIntyre in the Morning”.

Dawn Girocco, Vice President/Market Manager, Cumulus Media-Los Angeles said: “We are incredibly honored to have received three Golden Mike Awards this year. This kind of recognition demonstrates the continued evolution of KABC, and reinforces the tremendous growth of our station. Congratulations to Randy Wang, Jim Roope, and the entire 790 KABC News Team for their outstanding achievements and service to KABC and our community. We couldn’t be prouder!”

Drew Hayes, KABC Operations Director said: “We have an exciting, high-energy radio station, loaded with authentic stars and vital, dependable services. We entertain, inform, and give context to the craziness that our listeners experience every day. The Golden Mike victories are another confirmation that we are News. Talk. Evolved.”

What sets the Golden Mikes apart from other competitions is the "Golden Mike Standard of Excellence". Unlike most awards contests in which winners are determined by selecting which entry is the "best" among all those submitted in each category, winners of the Golden Mike Awards must also meet the "Standard of Excellence". If the judges decide that no entry in a category meets the "Standard of Excellence", then no award is given in that category. As a result, Golden Mike Award winners know that their work has been judged to be "excellent", as well as the "best".
