Vin Scully: 'I'll Never Watch Another NFL Game Again'

Vin Scully wishes a very pleasant afternoon to you, just as long as you’re not kneeling for the national anthem.

According to The NYPost, the legendary Dodgers broadcaster said he is done with the NFL over some players’ refusal to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner,” citing institutional racism and police brutality as their reasons for protest.

“I will never watch another NFL game again,” Scully said Saturday, to loud cheers of applause from a Pasadena Civic Auditorium crowd in California.

“I have only one personal thought, really,” he said. “And I am so disappointed. And I used to love, during the fall and winter, to watch the NFL on Sunday. And it’s not that I’m some great patriot. I was in the Navy for a year, didn’t go anywhere, didn’t do anything. But I have overwhelming respect and admiration for anyone who puts on a uniform and goes to war. So the only thing I can do in my little way is not to preach.”

Scully is the latest to weigh in on the controversial protests, which have spawned imitators, derision and praise. The players who will not stand — led by Colin Kaepernick, now out of the NFL — repeatedly have said the protests have nothing to do with the military and everything to do with racism, but many cannot separate the flag from the armed services.

The 89-year-old Scully was in the Dodgers booth for nearly seven decades and became beloved as not just the voice of the team, but of baseball. He retired after the 2016 season and has laid low in his post-baseball life.
