Baltimore Radio: Suspect Has Family Ties to WCBM Radio

A prominent Maryland family says in a statement that they are "shocked" and "devastated" after Luigi Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania and charged in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

CBS News reports Luigi is related to the Mangiones, a family in Maryland that owns several country clubs, including Haysfield Country Club in Hunt Valley, as well as health care facilities and real estate companies in the Baltimore area.

"Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione," Nino Mangione said in a statement from the family. "We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news."

According to The Baltimore Banner, Luigi's late grandfather, Nicholas Mangione Sr., was a self-made real estate developer who owned country clubs, nursing homes and a radio station. His grandmother Mary, who died in 2023 from Parkinson's disease, was described in an obituary as a hospital benefactor and a music patron.

The Banner reports the Mangione family purchased Turf Valley Country Club in 1978, establishing it as a golf course resort and residential community. According to the Banner, family businesses also include the Lorien Health Services nursing homes and radio station WCBM 680 AM.

Nino Mangione, a Republican state lawmaker in Maryland, previously hosted a show on WCBM 680 before taking office in 2018.

Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested at a McDonald's Monday afternoon in Altoona, PA on firearm charges after he was recognized by an employee. He was later charged in New York for Thompson's murder.

Thompson was shot and killed on December 4 outside the Hilton Midtown Hotel in Manhattan, New York.
