101WKQX retains the entire Q87.7 airstaff and adds Brian Phillips, who most recently had been on-air at the former “I101” format under Merlin Media. Phillips also was with WRXP in NYC and will co-host mornings with incumbent Lou Lombardo.
The station says some of the elements of the new station will be familiar. Others will be new, and there is more to come as we continue to fine-tune the station.
CRM notes one thing NOT expect will be a return to calling the station "Q101" or bringing back staffers from the former "Q101" station. Cumulus is choosing to start fresh and not build off of past owners' stations.
The only exception is Lou Lombardo, a radio survivor who started with Q101 in as a morning show producer in 2007, becoming the station's sports reporter in 2008 when it was owned by Emmis Communications, stayed with the station in its Merlin Media FM News 101.1 period as a social media manager and reporter, and then transitioned to Q87.7 in 2012 as a DJ, before now returning to the 101.1 FM frequency. Through three operators and a few formats, Lou Lombardo still hangs on
