Newsmax Settles Dominion Defamation Lawsuit For $67M

Newsmax Monday settled a defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems for $67 million, resolving claims over false 2020 election coverage alleging Dominion rigged votes.

Per an SEC filing reported by The New York Times, Newsmax will pay in three installments by January 15, 2027. A Dominion spokesperson expressed satisfaction with the settlement, while Newsmax maintained its coverage was “fair, balanced, and within professional standards,” claiming court rulings favored Dominion and restricted its defense, framing the case as an attack on free speech.

Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis ruled on April 28 that Newsmax’s segments contained inaccurate information likely to harm Dominion’s reputation but stopped short of a defamation verdict, leaving it to a jury.

Newsmax’s 2020 on-air clarification, also addressing a $40 million Smartmatic lawsuit settled in March, was cited by Davis as evidence the network acknowledged false reporting. No further settlement terms were disclosed.

Dominion previously settled with Fox News for $787.5 million in 2023. Newsmax’s statement emphasized its commitment to balanced reporting and open dialogue, arguing the judiciary’s actions undermine press freedom while positioning the network to continue its mission amid low public trust in media.
