Leno: Shutdown So Bad, Obama Down To One Teleprompter!

Boston Radio: The TJ Show Lands Britney Interview

Britney Spears has a 50 show residency at Planet Hollywood in Vegasstarting December 27, a new album dropping in December, and is intricately balancing her life between world-class pop star and mom to Sean and Jayden. She took a few minutes out of her whirlwind life on Thursday morning to talk with TJ and Loren on The TJ Show on WODS 103.3 FM The AMP.

While her upcoming performance schedule in Las Vegas doesn’t officially kick off until late December, Britney is keeping herself pretty busy with her eighth studio album set to arrive at the beginning of that month. She’s also collaborating on a track with Miley Cyrus called SMS (BANGERZ) which will appear on Miley’s Bangerz album due out next week.

Video -

The video for Britney’s latest single, “Work Bitch,” just officially dropped on October 1st. Much anticipated, the music video is described as steamy, adult, and sexy. TJ asked Britney if she’s less comfortable showing that much skin in a video given that she is a mom now.

“Oh my god, we showed way more skin and did way more stuff for the video then what is actually there. Like, I cut out half the video because I am a mother and because, you know, I have children, and it’s just hard to play sexy mom while you’re being a pop star as well,” said Britney. “I just have to be true to myself and you know, feel it out when I do stuff.”

Britney Spears’ yet-untitled eighth studio album will be released on December 3rd.

Boston Radio: The Sports Hub’s T&R Do Really Short Interview

Rick Petino
Toucher & Rich at WBZ-FM 98.5 The Sports Hub have had some short interviews in the past; but, Rick Pitino may have set a new record on Thursday morning.

The current Louisville coach is in the midst of a long and successful college career, but here in Boston, his disastrous tenure as Celtics head coach will always be thought of before any of Pitino’s success.

At Fred Toucher’s urging, Jon Wallach was geared up and ready to go with some pointed questions for Pitino, who’s doing publicity for his new book.

Yet Fred took care of it all in one short sentence.

Here’s how the whole interview played out, according to the station's website:
Fred: We are joined by Rick Pitino, former coach of the Celtics, current coach of the Louisville Cardinals who won the national championship. Rick Pitino, hello!
Pitino: Morning, guys.
Fred: You stink. You ruined the Celtics.
Fred then hung up and began “The Stack” segment, and the interview was over.

Agent Says Casey Kasem 'Of Sound Mind'

Casey Kasem's children are still being prevented from visiting their ailing father, his daughter Kerri told CNN.

Casey Kasem, known for his years hosting the countdown shows "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," is suffering from Parkinson's disease.

He's 81 and retired from his radio hosting in 2009.

According to Kerri Kasem, about three months ago, her stepmother, Jean Kasem, suddenly barred her sister, her uncle and some of Kasem's friends from seeing him. She's perplexed by the decision.

"I don't get it, I don't understand it," Kerri Kasem, who co-hosts the radio show "Sixx Sense" with Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx, told CNN. "He has Parkinson's and all the research we've done indicates socialization would help him."

"He can't really speak, but he knows we're there," she told the station. "And last time we saw him, he could shuffle a little bit. He had a hard, very hard, time walking. He was just deteriorating due to Parkinson's disease."

Don Pitts, Kasem's agent of more than 35 years, said he did not want to take sides in the argument, but he did say Casey is still of sound mind at age 81.

"He has Parkinson's, has it very bad. It took his speech, and for somebody who made millions of dollars using his voice -- for him to lose that gift, that beautiful instrument -- it must be frustrating. But he's handling it very well," Pitts said.

"His mind is very sharp, his brain works well. You can tell in his eyes he understands everything you're saying. He just has trouble translating it from the brain to his vocal cords."

Besides the famed countdown shows, Casey Kasem was also the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo" and an announcer for NBC. He was a popular DJ and occasional actor before "American Top 40" began in 1970.

Casey’s Kids Take Cause To ‘Today’

Family and friends of Casey Kasem, whose wife has blocked contact with the ailing radio icon for at least 2 1/2 months, took their cause to NBC's "Today" Thursday morning.

"I don't want any of his money. I don't want his estate. I don't want anything," Julie Kasem, one of Kasem's three children with first wife, Linda Myers, said in a video segment shot in a room with her radio-host siblings Mike and Kerri and others. "I simply want to see my father on a regular basis, give him a hug, hold his hand, give him a massage, put a smile on his face. It's that simple."

Twitter Unwraps IPO Details

Twitter revealed its filing for a proposed initial public offering on Thursday afternoon, setting in motion a debut that could be the most significant tech IPO since Facebook Inc. went public last year, according to Marketwatch.

The filing signals the start of a roughly one-month period in which would-be investors will finally be able to have access Twitter’s TWTR 0.00%   financial details before the social network finally goes public. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Twitter said it plans to list under the ticker symbol “TWTR.”

No share count or proposed price range was given in the offering, beyond a maximum total of $1 billion. Twitter also did not list which exchange it plans to list its shares on. Goldman Sachs was listed as the lead underwriter for the offering. Morgan Stanley, which led the Facebook FB +0.91%    IPO last year, was listed in the second slot for Twitter’s offering.

According to the SEC filing, Twitter had a revenue of $316.9 million in 2012, up nearly three-fold from $106.3 million in 2011. In the first six months of 2013, Twitter recorded revenue of $253.6 million, more than double the sales it posted in the year-earlier period.

But the company has been mostly in the red, reporting a net loss of $79.4 million in 2012, although that was smaller than the $128.3 million loss it reported in 2011. For the first six months of 2013, Twitter reported a loss of $69.3 million, up from $49.1 million the year-earlier period.

Rdio Switches On “Stations”

Just 12 business days after announcing a partnership with Cumulus Radio, Rdio introduces a major service change by releasing a free, unlimited version of its Internet radio capability to Android and iOS mobile devices, and rebranding it “Stations,” according to Kurt Hanson's RAIN newsletter.

As with similar offerings in Spotify (Rdio’s most direct competitor), Pandora and iTunes Radio, the Stations experience is ad-supported, or will be. At launch, mobile listeners will get an ad-free experience; desktop customers will see and/or hear commercials.

The announcement signifies quick progression of the quasi-acquisitional BizDev arrangement between Rdio and Cumulus, which includes handing over Rdio’s ad inventory to the Cumulus sales force. With Cumulus resources, Rdio adds an advertising component to its revenue model.

Pre-Cumulus, Rdio offered Internet-radio style listening as part of its paid subscription package in the mobile app -- new mobile users were granted a 14-day free trial. If the user canceled, the free version of Rdio’s mobile app became useless and Rdio lost a mobile customer. Desktop users got a better deal, with six months of test driving the subscription package, followed by a reversion to radio-style listening via a computer.

Rolling out uncapped listening in mobile brings Rdio to parity with its competitors. That’s an arguably overdue piece of positioning, and reflects back on the importance of the Cumulus partnership. Rdio is now a full-bore freemium service, with a feature set that traces a standard outline found in Spotify and iTunes Radio. Rdio’s business will continue to have a subscription side -- users may opt to dish out for accessing interactive features like on-demand listening and downloading.

16-Year-old Is Youngest to Top Billboard In 26-Years

Lorde
Three months ago nobody had ever heard of Lorde — today, the 16-year-old is top of the pops.

The NY Post reports the New Zealand singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, became the youngest performer in 26 years to take the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Buoyed by huge Internet buzz, Lorde came out of nowhere with the hit “Royals.”

The tune uses little more than her soulful voice and a bass track to describe growing up in poverty and skewer the kind of vapid pop stars she is now beating on the charts.

“Royals” went viral when its video was posted on YouTube over the summer. Now, Lorde has bumped off “Roar” singer Katy Perry and “Wrecking Ball” wreck Miley Cyrus to reach No. 1.

According to Billboard magazine, Lorde is the youngest singer to take its Hot 100 top spot since 1987, when 16-year-old Tiffany did so with her remake of “I Think We’re Alone Now.” Stevie Wonder remains the youngest to hit No. 1, at just 13, for 1963’s “Fingertips — Part 2.”

Facebook Reveals New TV Shows Generating the Most Buzz

The most-watched new TV shows launching this fall are also making a splash on Facebook, according to data the social-network giant released exclusively to Variety on Thursday.

The biggest launches at each of the four broadcast networks comprise the top four series that generated the most chatter on Facebook, which measured the conversations through new tracking tools introduced last month.

ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” led the field among new fall TV series launched prior to October, generating 1.13 million “interactions,” which is the total number of comments, posts and Facebook “likes” about a show, during a 48-hour period beginning with the series’ premiere date. There were 717,690 Facebook users talking about the premiere episode, which opened to an impressive 12.1 million viewers on Sept. 24.

Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow” was a close second with over 932,000 interactions from over 582,000 users. The drama series has been the most successful new launch for Fox, which ordered a second season Thursday.

While CBS comedy “The Crazy Ones” (254,310/211,552) and NBC’s “The Blacklist” (216,678/168,940) finished third and fourth, respectively, there was a steep fall-off in social chatter after “Hollow,” which drew more than three times the interactions that “Crazy” did. “Crazy” and “Blacklist” have been the biggest series premieres this fall from CBS and NBC, respectively.

LA Radio: Report..Pending KDAY Sale is Off

The pending sale of KDAY 93.5 FM is reportedly not going to happen.

LA Weekly quotes sources who work for the station, the sale is not taking place, and KDAY will continue broadcasting under its current format.

Speculation had been rife for weeks that the $19.5 million deal was in jeopardy. It required FCC approval, and a number of petitioners sought to spike the deal, questioning the buyers' connection to the Chinese government, among other issues. However, an FCC spokeswoman, reached before the government shutdown, told L.A. Weekly that the sale's approval was pending.

One of LA Weekly’s sources says the deal fell through because the prospective buyer -- RBC Communications -- has pulled out. Chinese-American investor Anthony Yuen has a majority stake in RBC, with a 20 percent share owned by Phoenix Satellite Television, which operates a half-dozen Chinese TV stations and is based in the British Virgin Islands.

Elvis King Of Digital Streams

Even in the world of digitally streaming music, Elvis Presley is still the King.

According to SoundExchange, a performance rights organization that collects royalties from more than 2,000 digital music services, Presley ranks as the most frequently streamed artist of the past decade, followed by Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam.

According to USAToday, satellite radio appears to have a particularly heavy influence on the SoundExchange rankings. The top three acts — Presley, Springsteen and Pearl Jam – all have dedicated channels on Sirius XM, as does the Grateful Dead.

SoundExchange, founded in 2003, collects royalty payments for artists and rights holders from the digital music services, which include satellite radio and streaming television services like Music Choice. Internet radio stations such as Pandora and iHeartRadio, as well as Internet music sites like Last.fm, comprise the majority of the services the organization licenses. The organization's payments are calculated based on how many times the organization receives reports that a user actually listened to a particular track.

Here's the list of SoundExchange's top 10 digitally streamed artists, for 2003 to 2013.
  1. Elvis Presley
  2. Bruce Springsteen
  3. Pearl Jam
  4. Rihanna
  5. Drake
  6. Usher
  7. Lil Wayne
  8. The Beatles
  9. Taylor Swift
  10. Grateful Dead

Cleveland Radio: WMMS’ Rover Indicted On 13 Charges

Rover (July2013)
WMMS 100.7 FM Morning radio personality Shane French, aka Rover, has been indicted on 13 charges for an incident that happened over the July 4th holiday weekend on Cleveland's Whiskey Island. (See original posting, Click Here)

According to  ActionNews19, French has been indicted for inducing panic, assault, resisting arrest, vandalism, criminal damaging, a fireworks charge and more.

Cleveland police say Rover and Toomey, a sidekick from Rover's Morning Glory, were "highly intoxicated." At that time, the men started shooting fireworks at the officer, "nearly hitting him."

The police report goes on to say that Rover got rowdy, grabbed the officer's shirt, pushed him with both hands in his back and said, " I don't believe you're a police officer," even after the officer flashed his badge.

Rover was then told he was under arrest, but ran away with his partner in crime.

Rover talks about being brutally assaulted by off-duty police officer Steven Kinas, and how his promise that he would file a complaint about it prompted the current charges against him as retaliation.

He is due to appear in court on October 16.

Jury: AEG Live Not Guilty In MJ Wrongful Death Trial

A Los Angeles jury decided Wednesday that AEG Live hired Dr. Conrad Murray, but also concluded that the concert promoter was not liable for Michael Jackson's drug overdose death, according to CNN.

The jury decided that Murray was competent, so even though AEG Live hired him, it was not liable for Jackson's death and didn't owe the Jackson family millions of dollars in compensation.

"I counted Michael Jackson a creative partner and a friend," the company's CEO Randy Phillips said. "We lost one of the world's greatest musical geniuses, but I am relieved and deeply grateful that the jury recognized that neither I, nor anyone else at AEG Live, played any part in Michael's tragic death."

The verdict brings the five-month-long trial to a close.

"We have said from the beginning that this case was a search for the truth. We found the truth. AEG hired Dr. Conrad Murray, the man who is in jail for killing Michael Jackson," according to a statement from family matriarch Katherine Jackson and her lawyers. "All options regarding the balance of the jury verdict are being considered."

Children Say Casey Kasem Being Held Prisoner

Julia Kasem
The eldest children of legendary TV and radio broadcaster Casey Kasem says his current wife is holding their ailing 81-year-old father prisoner inside his Holmby Hills estate.

Kasem has Parkinson’s.

He had three children with his first wife. They divorced in 1970.

The youngest of those three children, Julia, told KCAL9 the family, Kasem’s longtime agent and his brother are so frustrated about not being about to see Kasem they protested in front of the estate Tuesday demanding they get to visit him.

Julia said she hasn’t seen her father since August.

“This is our last straw,” she said, “This is our last straw. We couldn’t take it any more.”

She added, “We know how many people love dad. How special he is to a lot of people. We figured, you know what? Let’s let everybody know we care so much, we want him to know — we’re not abandoning you.”

They quote Jean as saying, ‘Dad is no longer available.’

Kasem founded the nationally syndicated American Top 40 countdown show, which he hosted from 1970 to 1988, and then again from 1998 to 2004. He also was the voice actor for the character Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, a Saturday morning cartoon that began in 1969.

Baseball HOF Names Frick Awards Finalists

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday announced the 10 finalists for the Ford C. Frick Award, which is given to baseball broadcasters of long and meritorious service.

According to MLB.com, a broadcaster cannot be considered for the Frick Award unless he's called big league games for at least 10 years, and nine of the 10 finalists have worked for two decades in the same market. Last year's winner, the late Tom Cheek, called 27 consecutive seasons for the Blue Jays.

The 10 finalists are: Joe Castiglione, Jacques Doucet, Ken Harrelson, Bill King, Duane Kuiper, Eric Nadel, Eduardo Ortega, Mike Shannon, Dewayne Staats and Pete van Wieren. The winner will be announced at the Winter Meetings and then be feted as part of the Hall of Fame's induction weekend.

This year's pool of candidates featured 160 qualified broadcasters from the "High Tide" era, which consists of men who called games from the mid-1980s to the present day. The finalists were culled from online balloting at the Hall of Fame's Facebook site during the month of September.

More than 20,000 votes were cast, and three men -- Doucet, King and Kuiper -- separated themselves from the pack in balloting. The other seven finalists were chosen by a Hall of Fame research committee. Eight of the 10 finalists -- except for King and van Wieren -- are still active.

All these men, giants in their field, will be vying for an honor named after one of the legends of the game. Ford C. Frick, a Hall-of-Fame executive, worked as a sportswriter and broadcaster before later impacting the game as MLB Commissioner and president of the National League.

Vin Scully
Vin Scully recently announced he will return next year for a 65th season announcing baseball. He now says 2014 may be his last.

“Right now, I’m pretty well sure – and I don’t want to go back and forth with it – but I’m looking to next year and thinking that should be about it,” Scully told KPCC in a recent interview.

He has been on one-year contracts for the last few years and turns 86 next month. His workload has slowed considerably: he only travels with the team on regular season road trips that are in California and nearby states.

For the playoffs that start today, Scully will only be heard on the radio.

Baltimore’s Stanstock Fest Is Musical Family Reunion

Stanstock 2013, billed as "The Ultimate Maryland Musical Family Reunion," will play out over two stages at McAvoy's on Putty Hill Avenue in Baltimore this weekend.

The music fest offers more than 35 hours of live music for just $10 a day.

"We're going to have great bands on the outside stage and great bands on the inside stage," festival social media director Russ Clarke told Parkville Patch. "We've got something for everyone—metal, classic rock, easy listening, Journey, Fleetwood Mac; if there's nothing you like, well ..."

The concert is for all ages and is family-oriented, according to Clarke.

"Undeniably, it was everyone's choice to have Stanstock benefit cancer—everyone either had lost someone to cancer or knows someone who is battling it," Clarke said. "We thought we'd use this event to celebrate victories together and mourn our losses as a family—cancer touches everyone."

Every element of Stanstock is donated, including the musicians' performances, the time of volunteer administrators, the venue and items for raffles and a silent auction, Clarke said.

Thirty-eight bands with more than 100 members will play over the course of Stanstock. Music presented will be that of the era of the 1970's, 80’s and 90’s, with some bands playing as they performed during that time and others creating tribute bands for this event.

There’s been a lot of changes in the radio landscape in Boston this year.  The market has heard many format changes, personality changes and recently a change at the Top of the Mountain.  For two months a Country station has been #1 6+.  However, this month Greater Media’s WKLB 102.5 FM ends up #2 moving 7.8—7.1.  Back on top is the usual suspect CCM+E’s Top40 WXKS Kiss 108.  WXKS returned to the top despite losing share 7.6—7.2

CBS Radio Classic Rock WZLX 100.7 FM bounced back from a down month 6.1—6.6 for #3.  Greater Media’s Classic Hits WROR 105.7 FM ticked-up again 5.5—5.6 to move into the #4 slot, tied with sister-station AC WMJX Magic 106.7 FM which was down a notch 5.7—5.6.

CBS’ WBZ-FM 98.5 FM Sports Hub claimed the top spot among all stations in the men 25-54 demo with an 8.0 share. WEEI 93.7 FM was tied for fifth overall.

25-54:  WXKS…WKLB…WZLX…WMJX, WBZ-FM tie

18-34:  WXKS…WJMN..WBQR…WKLB…WBOS

18-49:  WXKS…WKLB…WBZ-FM..WZLX…WJMN

Cume:  WXKS 1,433,200…WMJX 1,213,000..WROR  1,050,000

Nielsen Audio Tuesday also released September PPMs for the following markets: Washington DC, Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood FL, Detroit, Seattle-Tacoma, Phoenix, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Denver-Boulder, Baltimore and St. Louis.

Shutdown Doesn’t Cancel FCC Mandate

Like many government agencies impacted by the government shutdown, the FCC has stated that they'll be operating with a skeleton crew moving forward, with some 1,700 full-time employees sent home until the shutdown ends.

According to Karl Bode at dslreports.com, FCC commissioners and three inspectors general will be working.

Another sixteen employees will be on staff to handle things like interference detection and disaster response, national security issues and IT support, although the FCC website is down. Consumer protection will be one of the things put on hiatus.

"Consumer complaint and inquiry phone lines cannot be answered; consumer protection and local competition enforcement must cease; licensing services, including broadcast, wireless, and wireline, must cease; management of radio spectrum and the creation of new opportunities for competitive technologies and services for the American public must be suspended; and equipment authorizations, including those bringing new electronic devices to American consumers, cannot be provided," said the FCC.

And with the FCC shutdown, it doesn’t mean TV viewers will see nudity and it doesn’t mean listeners will hear f-bombs on the radio.

Eventually, the bureaucrats at the FCC will return to work.  And that’s when they’ll begin fielding complaints again. A funding-related door-shuttering doesn't overturn federal law or cancel the FCC's mandate. It also doesn't mean that the FCC can't revoke the license of any broadcaster who flouts its rules.

CCM+E’s Parks Says FCC AM Plan ‘A Joke’

Darryl Parks
Calls Radio Show A ‘Circle Jerk’

UPDATE: Park's blog has been scrubbed from the WLW website.

Earlier Posting...

The Director of AM Operations for Clear Channel, Darryl Parks has posted a scathing blog about the FCC’s plans to ‘revitalize’ the AM radio band.

Parks blog is what he calls “A Serious Message To The Broadcasting Industry” and is posted n the WLW 700 AM website.  Besides his coporate role, Parks hosts a Saturday show on WLW and sometimes fills-in at other times.

Parks piece criticizes the 6-part plan proposed by Acting FCC Chair Mignon Clyburn to fix the AM band and calls last week’s NAB/RAB Radio Show in Orlando "the yearly circle jerk gathering of broadcasters."

Parks also takes the media press to task copying press releases about the plan. He writes:
Today, besides interference from other stations, the AM band is also being interfered with by computers, cell phones, even those new energy savings light bulbs.  This is why it may be more difficult for you to receive a good signal from an AM station these days.
Just last week at the yearly “circle jerk” gathering of broadcasters called the NAB/RAB Radio Show, FCC Acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn announced a “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” with 6…count ‘em…6 ideas to rid station owners of horrible burdens.  What do these 6 ideas do?  Increase interference!  And no one.  Not one freaking person in the industry press will talk about this.  Obviously, they're too busy copying press releases for their publications and pretending to be Kevin Bacon's ROTC character.
According to Parks, the answer to less interference on the AM band is to turn-off off non-viable stations.   He also reminds station owners they “have one thing that is worth a ton of money. The land their towers sit on."

Delman’s separation deal is reported to be worth $1.95M.

There are reports that others have also departed the building in Columbia, MD.  However, Nielsen has not commented.  Nielsen Audio also have yet to announce exectuvie roles at the company.

Bezos Closes On the Washington Post

Amazon.com founder and chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos formally took over as the owner of The Washington Post on Tuesday, officially ending 80 years of local control of the newspaper by the Graham family.

According to the Washington Post, Bezos’s $250 million purchase was completed as expected with the signing of sale documents.

The signing transfers the newspaper and other assets from The Washington Post Co. to Nash Holdings, Bezos’s private investment company.

Bezos, who founded the online shopping company in 1994 and became a billionaire in the process, has vowed to continue the newspaper’s long history of independent journalism. His technical and marketing savvy, long-term outlook and lack of an apparent ideological agenda made him an attractive steward for the paper, Post Co. chief executive Donald E. Graham said in August, when an agreement in principle was first disclosed.

At the same time, Bezos, 49, has the deep pockets to sustain an enterprise that has been buffeted for years by declining readership and advertising, especially in the printed Post.

The Post’s new owner hasn’t disclosed specific plans or changes he intends to make for the money-losing paper.

MTV Airs Miley Cyrus 'The Movement' Doc Tonight

This may come as a shock, but it isn’t until a good quarter of the way through her new MTV documentary that Miley Cyrus sticks her tongue out. And twerking? Barely a passing mention.

According to The NYPost, someone at MTV deserves a serious raise for foreseeing the distant gold in the reinvention of Miley Cyrus, the “Hannah Montana” tween star who shocked the pearl-clutching world last month with a foam finger, a slew of teddy bears and a heaping portion of sex in an instantly infamous performance at the Video Music Awards.

For its surprisingly kinetic one-hour documentary, “Miley: The Movement” — premiering Wednesday at 10 p.m. — MTV followed Cyrus for four months, from the early summer debut of Miley 2.0 with her urban single “We Can’t Stop” through her naked-but-for-the-boots music video for the chart-topping “Wrecking Ball.”

The titular “movement” is what Miley calls her transformation from wholesome Disney entertainer to a 20-year-old doing whatever-the-hell she wants.

“People always want to call it a transition . . . It’s not a transition,” she says forcefully in the doc. “It’s a movement. It’s a growth. It’s a change.”

Minions Carry Justin Bieber On Great Wall of China

Just when you thought you might enjoy a week without any news of Justin Bieber annoying the world, along comes evidence that the most beloved/disliked self-involved 19-year-old on the planet has broken one of the most sacred unspoken rules of travel -- don't use your bodyguards to carry you up the Great Wall of China, according to CNNInternational.

Photos of the seemingly able-bodied Canadian pop star hoisted on the shoulders of his minions at the iconic site were posted on the Twitter page of BelieveTourUpdates, which has been following the singer on his current world tour.
