Baltimore Radio: Justin Johnson Promoted To WIYY PD

WIYY-FM (98 Rock), Baltimore’s iconic rock station, announced Monday the promotion of Justin Johnson to Program Director, effective September 1, 2025.

Johnson, who joined the station in July 2023 as Assistant Program Director, succeeds Rick Strauss, who is retiring after a long tenure as Program Director.

Johnson brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as Program Director at iHeartMedia’s WEBN in Cincinnati from 2019 to 2023, where he also coordinated branding for iHeart’s national Rock platform.

Justin Johnson
His earlier career includes roles such as morning show producer at WKLS in Atlanta, Program Director at WWBA in Tampa, talk host at WTKS in Orlando and WJFK in Washington, and on-air work at WWDX in Lansing, Michigan.

In his new position, Johnson will oversee all programming for 98 Rock, including popular shows like Justin, Scott, and Spiegel in mornings, Amelia’s middays with the "40-minute rock block," and afternoons with Kirk and Marianne. He will also manage content related to the station’s exclusive partnerships with the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles, reinforcing 98 Rock’s role as a flagship station for these teams.

Dan Joerres, President & General Manager of 98 Rock, praised Johnson as the “ideal successor” to Strauss, citing his multi-market experience and deep understanding of the station’s brand and audience. Johnson expressed enthusiasm for the role, calling it “an incredible honor and a dream come true” to lead 98 Rock’s talented team and build on its legacy as a trusted and respected brand in Baltimore and the radio industry.
