Murdochs Likely To Be Involved in US TikTok Deal

The idea of Fox Corp. investing in TikTok has gained traction in recent days as part of a broader U.S. government-orchestrated deal to restructure the app's ownership and avert a nationwide ban.

This stems from a 2024 law requiring TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to divest its U.S. operations or face prohibition due to national security and data privacy concerns. The proposed investment group aims to create a majority-American-owned entity for TikTok's U.S. arm, with Fox Corp. emerging as a key potential player. President Donald Trump publicly endorsed the Murdochs' involvement during a Fox News interview Sunday, describing Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch as "American patriots" likely to join the consortium.

Bloomberg reports exact terms remain confidential, the White House anticipates finalizing the agreement soon, potentially with an executive order from Trump collecting a multibillion-dollar fee.

A Fox Corp. stake in TikTok—estimated at 170 million U.S. monthly active users—would provide unprecedented access to a young, engaged demographic that traditional TV struggles to reach. TikTok's user base skews heavily toward Gen Z and millennials: over 76% of U.S. adults aged 18-24 use the platform monthly, with average daily usage at 52 minutes.

This aligns perfectly with Fox's content portfolio, including NFL broadcasts, The Simpsons, and streaming services like the ad-supported Tubi and premium Fox One.

Promotion to Young Audiences: Fox could integrate short-form video clips, teasers, and interactive challenges to drive traffic to its linear TV and streaming assets. For instance, viral TikTok trends tied to Fox Sports events or animated series could boost viewership among users who spend more time on social video (58 minutes daily on average) than traditional TV.

The move positions Fox not just as a media company but as a hybrid content-tech player, countering rivals like Disney or Warner Bros. Discovery in the streaming wars.
