Palm Beach Radio: Public Media Group To Acquire WFLM 104.7 FM

South Florida Public Media Group, which manages Miami’s NPR flagship WLRN, has agreed to purchase WFLM “The Flame” 104.7, a Palm Beach County FM station currently broadcasting hip hop and urban contemporary music.

The $6.45 million deal, announced June 6, 2025, awaits FCC approval. If approved, the station will transition to a noncommercial license, offering local news, investigative reporting, and NPR programming.

"I'm very confident that we're going to make this deal work," Richard Rampell, the media group's chairman of the board, said. "This is going to happen. Palm Beach County is finally going to have a public radio station."

The acquisition aims to fill the radio news gap in Palm Beach and Martin Counties, marking the area’s first high-signal NPR affiliate in over a decade. Previously, the county’s NPR affiliate, WXEL-FM 90.7, was sold in 2011 and rebranded as classical station WPBI, with WLRN’s NPR content later broadcast on the weaker 101.9 FM signal, limiting its reach.
