Michigan U-P Radio: Civic Media To Acquire Five Stations

Wisconsin-based Civic Media has expanded into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula by acquiring a five-station, three-city cluster from J&J Broadcasting, based in Iron River, Wisconsin.

The asset purchase agreement, filed with the FCC on July 1, 2025, for $1.55 million, awaits regulatory approval.

The acquisition is executed through the newly formed Michigan Civic Media Alliance, led by Civic Media with investment from the Michigan Independent Media Group (MIMG). A $300,000 downpayment has been made, held by Associated Title and Closing Services in Ironwood, Michigan.

The stations in the deal include:
  • “Real Country” WJMS (590 AM and 92.1 FM) in Ironwood, MI
  • Classic Rock WIMI “The Storm” (99.7 FM) in Ironwood, MI
  • “Superior Country” WUPY (101.1 FM) in Ontonagon, MI
  • Adult Hits WKMJ “Mix 93.5” in Hancock-Houghton, MI
  • Variety News/Talk/Sports WMPL (920 AM and 107.7 FM) in Hancock-Houghton, MI
Civic Media, led by CEO Sage Weil, emphasizes local media’s importance in rural areas, aiming to enhance community engagement. Vice President of Operations Kory Hartmann noted the stations’ long-standing community ties and plans to continue their legacy while expanding offerings.

J&J Broadcasting President Jerry Hackman expressed confidence in Civic Media’s commitment to local radio, marking the end of J&J’s 42-year stewardship.

Upon approval, Civic Media will operate 30 stations across three states: 23 in Wisconsin, two in Minnesota, and five in Michigan.
