R.I.P. Steve Duemig, Legendary Tampa Sports Host

Sports radio legend Steve “The Big Dog” Duemig died Thursday morning.  He died Thursday at the age of 64, succumbing to cancer.

He was an icon in the Tampa Bay area for nearly three decades, working at WFNS from 1991 to 1996 and later at 95.3 WDAE 620 AM & 95.3 FM from 1996 until his last show in February 2018.

Duemig was a hockey analyst for the Tampa Bay Lightning for two seasons.

During his long career, Duemig co-hosted a program on The Golf Channel. That show capitalized on his 13 years as a pro golfer. He also hosted a weekly call-in program on Fox Sports Radio.

"WDAE and iHeartMedia Tampa Bay would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the friends and family of 'The Big Dog' Steve Duemig," WDAE wrote in a statement on Facebook.

His wife Jennifer Duemig issued a statement“Our beloved Steve Duemig “The Big Dog” went to heaven peacefully today. The entire Duemig family thanks you all for all your prayers, love and support.”

WDAE Program Director said, John Mamola, “We mourn the loss of an icon in not only Tampa Bay radio, but the entire format of sports radio. ‘The Big Dog’ was an intelligent, brash, entertaining brand of sports talk that spawned a large following and sparked the minds of many looking to follow in his footsteps. God bless you Steve! Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family of Steve Duemig.”

NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner and co-chairman Bryan Glazer issued this statement:
“We are saddened to hear of the passing of Steve Duemig earlier today. Steve was an iconic figure in the Tampa Bay sports-radio landscape who earned the very appropriate nickname as the ‘Big Dog’ because he was a very influential voice on the airwaves when it came to sports in our area. His genuine love of sports, as well as his passion for the Tampa Bay community, were always on full display over his nearly three decades on the radio in our market. We send our deepest condolences to his wife Jennifer and the entire Duemig family.”
