Detroit-based mobile app developer jācapps and Greater Media's WMMR 93.3 FM have announced the launch of the station's mobile app that is now part of the Apple CarPlay ecosystem. The release is part of jācapps' "App EverywhereSM" offerings for radio broadcasters.
jācapps COO, Bob Kernen, notes, "It took a lot of collaboration with the Apple and WMMR teams, and we're excited that broadcast radio is now front and center on the Apple CarPlay screen. This is a giant step forward for the entire radio industry in its quest to remain dominant in today's cars."
Apple CarPlay is now available on more than 100 car models, creating an experience in dashboards similar to the iPhone and iPad.
Steve Meyers, Director of Digital Operations for Greater Media, comments, "We are thrilled to provide WMMR's loyal fans with immediate and convenient access to the content they love in Apple CarPlay-enabled cars. jācapps' "App EverywhereSM" platform is giving us the flexibility of distribution that our audiences are demanding in a very efficient service."
"We're so excited to give our fans convenient arm's length access to the live stream, all of Preston & Steve's podcasts and the station's archives and on-demand content," stated WMMR Program Director, Bill Weston. "Seeing the WMMR icon up on the dash with the other CarPlay enabled apps is a thrill. It's also reassuring we're in a very good position as the in-car audio experience evolves."
The "Connected Car" is a major battleground for the radio industry. "It is essential that radio retain its strong, historic presence in the middle of new car touchscreens," states Paul Jacobs, President of jācapps. "Parity with other media options in the car is imperative. We are excited that jācapps is leading the way for broadcast radio stations to be primary players on the Apple CarPlay platform."
jācapps is also developing mobile apps for the Android Auto system, and launched its first app on that platform in 2015.
