R.I.P.: Christopher North, Keyboardist For Ambrosia

Christopher North, the keyboardist and founding member of Ambrosia, died Monday at age 75, the band announced. Known for lush piano lines and soaring organ swells, North helped define the group’s sound on hits like 1978’s “How Much I Feel” and 1980’s “Biggest Part of Me.”

Ambrosia posted a tribute on its Facebook page praising North’s craftsmanship and impact on classic rock, saying his “aural landscapes” balanced virtuosity with soulful, radio-friendly hooks and that he was “loved dearly by his fans and bandmates.”

A cause of death was not formally reported by the band. Earlier reports, including a TMZ story quoting North’s brother, Richard, said he had developed pneumonia after being struck by a car in Santa Monica in October 2025 and had previously battled throat cancer. Friends and family told reporters those health struggles likely weakened him.

North remained connected to Ambrosia despite illness; the band said in October he had been hospitalized after a freak accident that led to pneumonia and appealed for thoughts and prayers as his condition worsened. An October update had said he was working to recover and return to the stage.

Ambrosia, which was largely inactive in the 1980s but continued touring in later decades, announced North’s death Monday night. The band is scheduled to play in Akron, Ohio, on April 17 and recently performed at the Villages retirement community in Florida.

North grew up in San Pedro, where many personal memories and local tributes have surfaced since the announcement. He is remembered by bandmates, friends and fans as a central creative force in the Los Angeles-based progressive-soft rock group.
