Snoop Dogg expressed discomfort with the inclusion of LGBTQ+ representation in children's films, specifically citing a scene in Disney's 2022 film Lightyear that features a same-sex couple.
On a recent episode of the It's Giving podcast, the rapper recounted taking his grandson to see Lightyear and being caught off guard by a scene where Alisha Hawthorne, a character voiced by Uzo Aduba, is shown marrying and raising a child with her female partner, Kiko.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Snoop described his grandson's confusion, noting that the child asked, "Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She's a woman!" Snoop admitted feeling unprepared to address the questions, saying, "I just came to watch the goddamn movie," and added that the experience left him "scared to go to the movies."
The Lightyear scene, which includes Disney's first prominent same-sex kiss, sparked controversy before the film's release. Initially at risk of being cut, the scene was retained after Pixar employees advocated for its inclusion.
Snoop, reflecting on the moment, questioned the appropriateness of such representation for young audiences, stating, "These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They're going to ask questions. I don't have the answer."
Snoop's comments have reignited criticism, with some calling for his removal as the headline performer at the Australian Football League's Grand Final. The 53-year-old rapper, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., has faced prior backlash for homophobic and transphobic remarks, including derogatory comments about Caitlyn Jenner and an anti-gay slur in a 2014 Instagram post. Entertainment Weekly has reached out to Snoop's representative for comment.
