R.I.P.: David Blake, With News Stops In Mobile, L-A and NOLA

David Blake ('54-'25)
David Blake, a revered radio news anchor and morning show host, passed away on April 13 at age 71 due to complications from heart failure. His distinctive voice was a staple for listeners in Mobile, Los Angeles, and New Orleans over a 45-year career.

Blake began at WABB-AM in Mobile in the 1970s, a golden era for local radio, partnering with morning host Ron Frazier. Known for his serious demeanor, Blake was always “David,” never “Dave,” serving as the straight man to his comedic counterparts.

He later joined WEZB 97 FM in New Orleans as a morning news anchor alongside “Cajun” Ken Cooper.

Returning to his native Southern California, Blake became news director at KFI AM 640 in Los Angeles, working with Gary Owens and comedy duo Lohman and Barkley.

He eventually returned to New Orleans, anchoring morning news at WLMG FM Magic 101.9 before spending 30 years at WWL radio, where he was the straight man for hosts Bob DelGiorno and Tommy Tucker.

As a clear channel station broadcasting at 50,000 watts, WWL’s signal reached 40 states at night, making Blake a vital voice during Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, often the only source of local broadcast news. His work earned accolades from the Press Club of New Orleans, the Associated Press, and a national Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding newscast.

A celebration of Blake’s life will be held in New Orleans at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at t2t.org.
