Trump, CNN's Kaitlan Collins Spar In WH Showdown

During a Thursday signing of new worldwide reciprocal tariffs in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump clashed with CNN's Kaitlan Collins over her network's credibility. As Trump signed the measure to align U.S. tariffs with those of other countries on imports, Collins interrupted to ask if the tariffs would raise prices for Americans.

“Mr. President, you won the White House in part because of high inflation, if your tariffs make prices go up...” Collins began, but Trump cut her off, saying, “Excuse me. We haven’t asked you to speak yet, please.”

After allowing the Q&A to proceed, Trump chose another reporter to start, but when Collins got her chance, she asked, “So Americans should prepare for some short-term pain?”

“No, you said that. I didn’t say that,” Trump replied. “We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows what is going to happen.”

Later, during the press conference, Trump criticized Collins for questioning him about Vladimir Putin and attacked CNN’s credibility. When another reporter asked if Trump believed Putin’s claim of wanting peace, Trump said, “Yeah, I do. I believe he wants peace. When I spoke to him yesterday, I mean, I know him very well—yeah, I think he was peace. I think he would tell me if he didn’t, I think he’d like to see peace.”

Collins followed up, asking, “Do you trust President Putin?”

Trump used the opportunity to blame the Ukraine war on Joe Biden and criticized Collins’ ties to the former president. “This should have been done by Biden years ago. This should have never been allowed to happen,” he said. “I know [Biden is] a friend of yours. He’s a friend of CNN. That’s why nobody watches CNN anymore. Because they have no credibility.”

Collins had faced ridicule over the weekend for her intense reaction to Trump’s first three weeks in office.
