Portland OR: KGW Sportscaster Joe Becker Retires

KGW-TV8 Portland OR sports anchor Joe Becker celebrated his last day on Friday.

Joe has been with KGW for 32 years and is known for his infectious enthusiasm, bites at high school football games, and of course, his signature...pause.

Becker covered sports weekdays and is the weekend sports anchor on KGW News at 5 and KGW News at 11.

Joe also appeared on KGW's weekly sports program, Sports Sunday. During the football season, he showcased local high school games in the popular segment, Friday Night Football, in KGW's 11 p.m. news.

Joe started at KGW in 1984. He came to Portland from WLNE-TV in Providence, Rhode Island where he served as weekend sports anchor and reporter from 1979 to 1984. While there he covered all the Providence and Boston teams, including the Celtics championship teams in 1981 and 1984. Prior to that, he worked at KSDK-TV in St. Louis, Missouri.

In 2009, Joe was named Oregon Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He's been named Sports Announcer of the Year by the Oregon Association of Broadcasters. He's also won an Emmy.
