John Legend got the ball rolling for Super Bowl 49 by singing "America the Beautiful" as the camera showed shots of Grand Canyon National Park, Boston and Seattle. The "All of You" singer showed viewers at home he was worthy of the nine Grammys he's been awarded over the course of his career.
John's performance was followed by Idina Menzel taking center stage for the National Anthem. She was accompanied by the Joint Service Color Guard, which represents all members of the U.S. military. As she belted out the patriotic lyrics, the camera cut away to the U.S. Forces in Afghanistan. The song was capped by a flyover from the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.
In 12 minutes, Katy Perry gave Super Bowl halftime viewers a medley of hits, four outfit changes, choreographed dance moves, fireworks, chessmen, sharks, a slight booty pop on Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott.
Katy kicked off her performance with "Roar" while riding in on the University of Phoenix Stadium turf on a gigantic geometric tiger. She also performed her hits "Dark Horse," "Teenage Dream," "Unconditionally," "California Gurls," and "I Kissed a Girl" with help from Kravitz.
The visually captivating performance then kicked into third gear when Missy hit the stage. Alongside Katy, Missy filled the stadium with energy as she danced and rapped to "Work It" and "Loose Cannons."
Katy concluded the performance by belting out vocals to her hit "Firework" while wearing a star-embellished gown. Lifted thousands of feet into the air in circular motion, Katy ended the performance saying, "God Bless America."
