NFL Commanders Could Be Playing In Trump Stadium

The White House on Saturday enthusiastically endorsed naming the Washington Commanders' new $4 billion stadium after President Donald Trump, following an ESPN report that an intermediary informed the team's ownership group of the president's desire.

"That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

The Commanders and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser's office declined to comment on the report.

The team is set to return to the nation’s capital in 2030 at a new stadium on the RFK Stadium site under an April 2025 deal. The Commanders will contribute $2.7 billion, with the District investing $1.1 billion for the stadium, housing, green space, and a sports complex along the Anacostia River.

The D.C. City Council approved the agreement in September, and demolition of the old RFK Stadium has begun. Congress granted the city 99-year control of the federally owned land in January, after President Joe Biden signed the transfer bill in late 2024.

The site was home to the franchise — then known as the Redskins — for over three decades, including three Super Bowl victories in the 1980s and 1990s, before the team relocated to Landover, Maryland, in 1997.
