Marco Rubio Made The Rounds Of the Sunday Morning Shows

Marco Rubio

On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio countered mainstream media narratives during multiple appearances following President Trump's bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Rubio clashed with CBS host Margaret Brennan, who pressed for details about the Trump-Putin meeting and the upcoming White House meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.

In an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not rule out the United States imposing more sanctions on Russia, but said doing so would signal the failure of President Trump’s efforts to reach a cease-fire or lasting peace in Ukraine. “The minute he takes those steps, all talks stop,” Rubio said. “The minute we take those steps there is no one left in the world to go talk to the Russians and try to get them to the table to reach a peace agreement,” he added. Asked whether Mr. Trump’s earlier threats to impose additional sanctions on Russia amounted to “empty threats,” Rubio replied that all the sanctions that were imposed before Mr. Trump took office remained in place.

During an appearance on CBS 'Face The Nation' Rubio said both sides need to make concessions to stop the war...

On Sunday, ABC host Martha Raddatz asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, "Can you name any concessions Vladimir Putin made during the meeting?" Rubio sharply responded, "I wouldn’t name them on your program. Why would I do that?"

Rubio said he thought “progress was made” in President Trump’s talks with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, which he attended, but provided no specifics. “Both sides are going to have to make concessions,” Rubio said. “Of course concessions were asked. But what utility would there be of me going on a program and telling you, ‘We wagged our finger at Putin and told him, You must do this and you must do that’? It’s only going to make it harder and less likely.” Negotiations work only in private, he said.
