Philly Radio: Bob Cooney Gets New Gig

Veteran sportswriter and former 97.5 The Fanatic host Bob Cooney has joined AllPhly.com to cover the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cooney, who spent seven years at WPEN-FM hosting morning and midday shows, was let go in July to make way for Mike Missanelli’s return. Before radio, he covered the Philadelphia 76ers and college basketball for the Philadelphia Daily News for 25 years.

AllPhly, part of Denver-based AllCity Network, did not specify Cooney’s role but announced his addition expands their Phillies coverage. AllCity, launched in 2019, entered Philadelphia as its fourth market in 2023. Last December, the company laid off staff, eliminated its Philadelphia Union podcast, and scaled back its daily Phillies podcast, leaving Tyler Zulli as the sole host after John Foley’s departure to OnPattison and Renee Washington’s exit.

Cooney, who worked with Zulli and AllPhly hosts Anthony Gargano, Jamie Lynch, and Devon Givens at The Fanatic, teased his return with an X post from Citizens Bank Park’s press box and published a Phillies story on AllPhly’s website Friday.

AllPhly currently produces weekday podcasts for the Eagles (Zach Berman, Bo Wolf, Fran Duffy), 76ers (Devon Givens, Kyle Neubeck, Derek Bodner, Rich Hofmann), and Flyers (Charlie O’Connor, Bill Matz). Jon Marks, formerly of SportsRadio 94 WIP, hosts a morning show. AllCity raised $12 million from Tegna in August 2024 to launch its Dallas market, following a $9 million round led by investors including Andre Iguodala and Chauncey Billups.

The company recently partnered with Bet365 as its exclusive sports betting partner and expanded podcast distribution to Comcast Xfinity, Samsung TV Plus, and The Roku Channel.
