Des Moines Radio: After 50-Years, Van Harden Retires At WHO

Van Harden
WHO 1040 AM host Van Harden is retiring after 50 years on the job.

"Today, I'm announcing my upcoming retirement on Jan. 8, 2021," Harden announced Tuesday morning on his regularly scheduled radio program.

Harden, who was hired in 1971, said that he told the station about his retirement on his work anniversary earlier this year.

"I didn't give them a two weeks' notice, I gave them a one-year notice," Harden said.

After 50 years, Harden said that he feels now is the time to retire.

Harden thanked his co-workers, especially former co-host Bonnie Lucas, who retired in March after working with Harden for 25 years.

"Van and Bonnie in the Morning" aired weekdays from 4:59 to 9 a.m. Lucas joined Harden in the early 1990s following co-host Connie Murad leaving the "Van and Connie" morning show.

Harden said that when he told Lucas his retirement plans, she laughed, because she had him beat with her plans to retire. He plans to continue writing and speaking.

Harden and Lucas were inducted into the Iowa Broadcasters Hall of Fame last year.
