Albany NY: The Country Cat Simulcasts For Now

The man who ran country music powerhouse WGNA 107.7 FM for 18 years In Albany, NY is now hoping to take it down a notch or two, according to bizjournals.com

Bob Ausfeld, now general manager of Albany Broadcasting Co. Inc. in Latham, has moved that company's 3 1/2-year-old country station from 104.9 FM to 100.9 FM. The move, which started last week, will give WZMR The Cat a better signal and reach.

"We wanted that signal," Ausfeld said. "It is probably the best engineered frequency in the market. They will be able to hear us in Queensbury, out past Amsterdam and into the Berkshires."

Albany Broadcasting had used 100.9 as rock station WKLI, but Ausfeld said the market has too many rock stations.  "Country is just WGNA and us," he said. "And I think we can take them."

WGNA, which is owned by Townsquare Media, is the most listened-to station in the market. It attracted 10.6 percent of all listeners aged 12 and over in the Albany-Troy-Schenectady market this summer, according to the latest figures from Nielsen Audio. WZMR had a 3 percent share, putting it in 11th place.

Ausfeld said it has not been decided what will air on 104.9 FM. It will simulcast The Cat with 100.9 until a determination is made.
