Jay “Super Jay” Johnson, a cherished figure in radio and television, passed away at 78 after a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness.
Known for his vibrant personality and dedication to amplifying Black voices, Johnson’s career spanned over five decades, leaving an indelible mark on the media landscape and the communities he served.
Johnson’s broadcasting journey began in 1968 at Chicago’s WGRT, where he honed his skills before joining WVON, a legendary station in the same city. At WVON, Johnson became a key member of “The Good Guys,” a group of dynamic radio personalities who defined the station’s influence during the 1970s. His engaging presence on the airwaves helped transform WVON into a powerful platform for Black culture, fostering community dialogue and celebrating African American music, issues, and achievements during a pivotal era.
In the late 1970s, Johnson relocated to Indianapolis, where he took on the role of Program Director at WTLC-FM. Under his visionary leadership, WTLC emerged as a top-rated station, dominating the Indianapolis airwaves for nearly two decades. Johnson also hosted the highly popular Jay Johnson Show in the afternoon slot, captivating listeners with his charisma, humor, and deep connection to the community.
His tenure at WTLC was marked by significant accolades, including Black Radio Exclusive’s Station of the Year awards in 1980 and 1984 and Billboard’s Soul Station of the Year in 1981.
Beyond radio, Johnson expanded his influence into television. He served as an entertainment reporter and weatherman, bringing his signature warmth and professionalism to the screen. Additionally, he hosted Black Focus, a public affairs program on WISH-TV, where he addressed critical issues affecting the African American community, further solidifying his role as a trusted voice in media.
He worked with ABC Radio Networks and Westwood One, broadening his reach and influence in the industry. H also e provided voiceover services for commercials, narrations, and other projects, leveraging his iconic voice to continue impacting the industry.
