AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act Closer To Senate Action

The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2023 (S.1669) has garnered attention in the Senate, and it seems poised to advance. Let’s delve into the details:

Bill Overview: Introduced by Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA) on May 17, 2023, this bill aims to ensure that all new motor vehicles are equipped with devices capable of accessing AM broadcast stations as standard equipment. AM radio stations play a crucial role in delivering emergency alerts, news, and entertainment programming. Some newer vehicles lack AM equipment, which prompted the need for this legislation.

Key Provisions: The Department of Transportation (DOT) will issue a rule mandating that all eligible motor vehicles (manufactured in the U.S., imported, or shipped in interstate commerce) have devices capable of receiving signals from AM broadcast stations or digital audio AM broadcast stations. Manufacturers who do not include AM access devices must clearly label this fact for purchasers. Non-compliance may result in civil penalties assessed by DOT or civil actions brought by the Department of Justice.

Alternative Communication System Study: The Government Accountability Office (GAO) will study whether a reliable alternative communication system exists for emergency alerts. Factors considered include the cost to drivers and passengers and the time required to develop and implement an alternative system.

This bill addresses the importance of AM radio accessibility and its role in public safety. As it progresses, its impact on vehicle technology and emergency communication is being closely monitored.

  1. If they had programming we wanted to listen to, they wouldn't need a law forcing AM into our cars. Just sayin'.
