Columbia SC Radio: Teddy Heffner Returning To WCOS-AM

Longtime Columbiam SC sports radio personality Teddy Heffner has earned what he called “a reprieve” when he announced his daily talk show will move from WFMV 620 AM, its home for the past five years, to WCOS 1400 AM Fox Sports 1400 and iHeartMedia, beginning Feb. 10.

The State reports Heffner spent nearly 20 years with then-Clear Channel Radio (now iHeartMedia) before a format change forced him out in late 2014. His three-hour show will air from 9 a.m. to noon weekdays. Since March 2015, he had worked the 6 to 9 a.m. (later 7 to 9 a.m.) for Glory Communications’ AM and FM signals.

That position was to end this past Friday, with the former WGCV changing formats as of Feb. 1.

“I was ‘dead man walking,’ and I could see the door to the execution chamber,” Heffner said. “But fortunately, I got a reprieve before I got there.”

Heffner, a former sports reporter for The State, has worked in sports-talk radio for nearly 30 years.

“We are looking forward to having Teddy back on Fox Sports 1400,” iHeartMedia senior vice president/programming LJ Smith said Friday. “His knowledge of sports and the connection he has with his listeners is really unique to Columbia radio. And now people can listen to him no matter where they live or travel, on the iHeartRadio App.

“It’s a win-win-win. Teddy is back doing what he loves, listeners have their trusted sports expert back every day and we get to work with a great guy. We could not be more excited.”

Heffner, 68, announced on-air recently that his job at WFMV was ending Friday. After negotiations with iHeartMedia, he told listeners this past Wednesday of his new position.
